Every dog and owner begin training at a different point. This can vary according to the dog's age, history, experiences, and the owner's ability to train the dog. Then, once training begins, where does it go? What are your goals? What are your expectations? Kate has one of her better 'weird analogy' moments and compares the process of training to a road trip and Liz and Petra follow along for the ride. Feel free to join them. Check out Liz's blog!

These pet podcasts are dog podcasts for dog lovers! We’ll talk about dogs large, small and in between; purebred dogs, designer dogs and mixed breeds. When we discuss breeds and mixes, we’ll take a look at what constitutes a breed or a mix; and the traits of some specific breeds. We’ll also take a look at how you can choose the right breed and dog for your family.
We will also talk about the joys (and hassles) of living with a dog because when we share our lives with dogs, we are bringing another species into our home and there are often misunderstandings and miscommunications. My co-hosts, Petra Burke and Kate Abbott, from Kindred Spirits Canine Education Center in Vista, CA, will share their expertise and offer solutions to some common (and uncommon) problems. Feel free to drop us an email at liz@petliferadio.com and we’ll address as many problems as we can in upcoming shows.
We also plan on having fun with this dog podcast. We’ll talk about ways we have fun with our dogs and how you can, too, from non-competitive agility and flyball to carting and therapy dog volunteer work. From teaching A, B, C’s to your dogs to trick training. We believe in laughing at ourselves and having a good time with our dogs and we hope you will, too. So listen to our dog podcast every week! These dog podcasts are for dog lovers, and that's you!

A listener asks some questions. Katie says she and her husband will be getting a dog this year but have some questions. The first was about using a crate and whether it really was a good training tool. Liz, Petra and Kate talk about how long a dog should be asked to stay in a crate and some options for longer time periods. Katie then asked about bringing home a puppy, an adolescent, or an adult and the hosts talk about pros and cons of each. Since Katie and her husband will be first time dog owners, that's discussed too. Although these questions were asked by one prospective dog owner, they have applications for many listeners so please tune in.

People own dogs for a variety of reasons: companionship, security, competing in dog sports, and many others. But no matter why you decide to share your life with a dog, Liz, Petra and Kate hope you take the time to have fun with your dog. And while going for a walk can be fun, blowing bubbles for your dog to catch is silly and even more fun. So is making noise through the cardboard tube in the middle of the paper towels and playing monster under the covers before you get out of bed in the morning. Having silly fun with your dog is a wonderful way to increase the joy you share with your dog.
In this podcast, details of the contest celebrating the 100th episode of this podcast are revealed.

We usually like to have fun with our podcasts but sometimes a serious one is needed. Recently in our area the headlines blared two serious dog bite cases. In one an infant was killed and in another a six year old was badly bitten. In neither case was the dog 'bad' but instead, bad choices were made. Let's talk about keeping both dogs and kids safe.

Many puppy owners don't realize that puppies don't automatically grow out of bad behaviors. Growing up doesn't automatically turn a puppy into a good dog. Nina Ottosson has developed a line of dog toys that are absolutely awesome. These toys are designed for dogs and their owners; dogs don't play with these alone. Instead, they are for you to teach your dog, help him, and then watch him discover how to play with them. At Kindred Spirits Dog Training, we handed out several of these toys to our trainers and had them play with their dogs. We used dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds. In this podcast we'll tell you what the toys are, how are dogs (and cat) responded, and where you can find out more about these unique toys.

As dog trainers, we get calls all the time from the owners of dogs who trash the house, dig up the yard, bark annoyingly, or escape from the yard when they are left home alone. Luckily, for many dogs, there are some easy-to-implement solutions. In this podcast we'll talk about exercising the dog's body and mind, teaching him to stay home alone, and we'll also discuss some toys that will help distract him.

People who don't have dogs - who don't share their lives with dogs - think dog owners are nuts. You knew that, right? After all, we choose our cars based on whether they will carry our dogs well, and clean easily. We choose flooring (carpet, tile or?) because of our dogs. Here are some of the things we came up with. Email us yours!

Dogs provide us with a lot of companionship, but when we share our lives with them, we are living with another species. Dogs don't understand that muddy feet can ruin a white fabric sofa! So tune in; perhaps some of our hints can help you and your dog.

Language, especially the English language, is a funny thing. In this podcast we're talking about two different aspects of the English language. In the first half of the show, we'll help you establish a vocabulary for your dog. What basic words should he understand?
In the second half of the show, we'll introduce doggerel that begins with 'dog.' It's curious how many words and phrases begin with dog. Petra, Kate and I have been seeing an increasing number of designer dogs (or breeds) in our classes. Although we don’t have a problem with mixed breeds dogs; we’ve all owned mixed breeds, we do have a problem when the new owners of these dogs have unrealistic expectations.
I also feel that people are paying way too much money for these mixed breed dogs; especially when there are so many in the local shelters and humane societies who can be adopted for very reasonable prices. Tune in and listen as we discuss what a pure breed is, what these designer breeds are and some of our thoughts on the subject.
