Bob Tarte

Host of: What Were You Thinking?

Bob Tarte and his wife Linda live on the edge of a shoe-sucking swamp near the West Michigan village of Lowell. When not fending off mosquitoes during temperate months and chipping ice out of plastic wading pools in the frigid winter, Bob writes the Technobeat world music column for The Beat magazine. He has also written for The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Miami New Times, The Whole Earth Review, and other publications.

Bob’s first book, Enslaved by Ducks, was chosen as an “Editors’ Choice Nonfiction Book” for 2004 by Readers Digest. Patricia Heaton, co-star of the long-running television show, Everybody Loves Raymond. , purchased the dramatic rights for possible movie development.

Bob’s second book, Fowl Weather delves deeper into the craziness of living with a knot-tying parrot, unruly rabbits, an amorous dove, ducks, geese, and hens. According to Sara Gruen, author of the bestselling Water for Elephants. “More than just a hilarious and raucous romp (which it is), Fowl Weather. shows how a parrot, or a rabbit, or a duck, or a cat, can teach us more about ourselves and about the chaos of the world than any therapist or philosopher.”

In addition to serving the whims of their own animals, Bob and Linda also raise and release orphan songbirds for the Wildlife Rehab Center, Ltd.

Bob is currently writing his third book, The Funnel of Happiness, and still trying to find a few squawk-free moments in his day.
