The American dream - to own a house - is being shattered as thousands with subprime mortgages face foreclosures and must walk away from their homes. Sadly, far too many dogs and cats and other family pets are being either abandoned or surrendered to shelters because their owners are unable to find pet-welcoming rentals. Shelters are reporting record number of surrenders.
