Deborah Defends Doodles
Deborah points out the untruths being circulated in the attack on doodles recently in the press after an interview with the creator of the original labradoodle for service who says creating the breed is his life’s regret and described doodles as ‘Frankenstien monsters’ . When his explanations are closely examined, it is obvious he regrets his choice mostly because of the problems that come with mass popularity and unethical breeding as Deborah and Dr. StanCoren agree has happened to almost every breed that became popular too fast. In the interview Mr. Wally Conron states that he attempted to train 33 different standard poodles for service as Seeing Eye dogs and failed!
Deborah just doesn’t understand how this could be when 3/9 standard poodle puppies born at Camp Good Dog in 2018 were selected by Deborah early on for specific service aptitude, given basic training and then placed with owners who successfully completed the training. 3/3 as compared to 0/33 which makes for a lively debate on air with Dr. Coren whose recent article ‘A designer Dog-Maker Regrets his Creation’ in Psychology today caught Deborah’s attention. Deb Wolfe explains she has bred doodles ( and Poodles) since 2005 offering free lessons to all buyers (who never need them) and rehoming if ever they should choose to return the puppy or dog and it just doesn’t happen.
Doodles are easy to train, well behaved, adorable dogs who are well loved by their families who often had purebred goldens or purebred labs prior and they say the doodle is a great deal smarter and easier to train. While true that not all doodles are non shedding, it is very easy to tell very early which will shed and which will not. Even with the doodles that do shed, it is far less than a regular lab or golden but yes the shedding doodles shed more than the non shed doodles and more than poodles and that’s why a good ethical breeder explains this when you pick your pup. Some buyers prefer a dog who looks more like a retriever and sheds a little because then they don’t have to send it for grooming or buy clippers; others want the no shed properties of a curly no shed doodle or if truly allergic/ asthmatic a good breeder will steer them toward a purebred poodle. What is a good breeder?
Dr. Coren and Deb Wolfe explain how to find a good breeder and select a healthy good pup.
