The Animals of Proud Spirit
Melanie Sue Bowles, author and co-founder of the Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary, joined Tim in this episode to talk about her latest book, The Dogs of Proud Spirit. Tim asked Melanie what inspired her to write this book, what she would like readers to take away from reading this book and what some of the biggest challenges are in running a sanctuary. Tim and Melanie also talked about one of the many success stories that are featured in her book. BIO:
Melanie Sue Bowles earned her living as a professional firefighter/medic, but her true passion has always been animal welfare. In 1991, along with her husband, Jim, she established Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. In operation for over twenty years and currently caring for nearly 60 horses, today Proud Spirit stands as one of the most successful, longest existing facilities for equines in the United States. While their focus has always been horses, Jim and Melanie also UN-officially rescue dogs. There's a baker's dozen of formerly homeless pups living at the sanctuary; all part of the family and all over the furniture. Melanie is the author of three nonfiction books which chronicle the lives of the horses, dogs, cats and even a few pigs who have all found peace and safety at the gate of Proud Spirit.
