Dawn A. Marcus, MD is a neurologist and professor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. While spending two decades managing patients with chronic pain complaints, she soon learned that treatments required more than simply improving the physical status of damaged joints, muscles, and nerves. These patients required a holistic approach—treating their diet, sleep patterns, exercise habits, mood, and social concerns.

Dr. Marcus’ own life changed when a soft-coated wheaten terrier entered her life, causing her to adopt many of those same positive healthy lifestyle changes she prescribed to her patients. The little terrier soon became instructor to the professor, teaching many valuable lessons about healthy living and a positive attitude. Through terrier training, she’s more active, happier, and 20 pounds lighter! Dr. Marcus is now the handler for two adorable soft-coated wheaten terriers, trained as certified therapy dogs. She enjoys her daily hikes with the terriers, as well as having one of the dogs accompany her on rounds in the hospital.

A nationally and internationally recognized speaker and educator, Dr. Marcus has published over 100 articles in medical journals and six medical books, including 10 Simple Solutions to Migraines for which she received the National Headache Foundation Media Excellence Award. Dr. Marcus also serves as a consultant for Del Monte’s Power of Paws program, which encourages better human health through dog companionship. Her latest book details the latest research on relationships between human health and canine companionship and provides practical tips for using your own dog as a “canine personal trainer,” called Fit As Fido: Follow Your Dog to Better Health.
