Jane Greco Deming


    Jane Greco Deming is the Director of Humane Education for American Humane Association.  For the last 30 years she has been committed to providing quality leadership with regard to animals and animal care.  Although her first education was in business management, she later was certified by the AZA through North Carolina State University in zoo management and spent the first fifteen years of her career as a zoo educator, consultant and zoo investigator for HSUS.  In 1994 for shifted gears and became the Director of Education at Providence Animal Rescue League and successful continued her career there until taking her current position with AHA in early 2007.


    Jane’s most notable accomplishment was the creation of the first-of-its-kind in the nation children’s museum exhibit now known as, Pets & People at the Providence Children’s Museum.  In early 2006 the one millionth visitor, toured the space that is designed to teach children through exploration and role-playing the importance of kindness and responsibility toward animals.  The exhibit garnered several awards and gained national acclaim for its uniqueness and quality.  She also created a children’s coloring book called, “Let’s Play it Safe around Dogs.”  Many other shelters and humane organizations now use that lesson plan to deliver the important message about safe dog interactions.  In February of 2007 she, along with her collaborative partner, Katenna Jones, Animal Behaviorist at the RISPCA unveiled “Baby-Ready Pets.”  This kit is designed to teach shelter staff how to run workshops for expectant parents on how the prepare your pets for the arrival of a new baby, so that all will be safe. 


    A licensed wildlife rehabilitator for over 28 years, Jane was instrumental in establishing a rehab program in her state and wrote much of the first state rehab training manual.  She served on the board of the Association of Professional Humane Educators (APHE) for the last six years and is on the board of directors of a zoo in Massachusetts called, Southwick’s.  She is the former director of the RI Disaster Animal Response Team or RIDART and is certified in disaster preparedness.
