As cat owners, we all want to give our feline friends the best life possible. We’re careful about the food, treats, and toys we choose to keep them happy and healthy. But what about their teeth?
Dental health is one area that often gets overlooked, and trust me, I’ve been guilty of that myself! So today, I’m super excited to chat with Dr. Greg Reinhart, Chief Scientific Officer at Pet Honesty, to dive into how we can keep our cats' teeth and gums in tip-top shape. Dr. Reinhart led efforts in the petfood industry to introduce omega-3 fatty acids for healthy skin and coat, moderately fermentable fibers for optimal intestinal function, prebiotics for improved gut function, large breed puppy formulas to decrease skeletal problems, diets that improve mobility, maternal diets for increased litter size, formulas that decrease tartar accumulation, diets that improve puppy trainability and technologies that improve immune function, lean body mass, athletic dog endurance and hunting dog performance. Veterinary therapeutic products were also developed that manage dogs/cats with skin and allergy conditions, diarrhea, kidney disease, obesity, inappetence, arthritis, geriatric conditions and urinary tract problems. He organized multiple Iams Nutrition Symposia for veterinary professionals, scientists and academicians. Dr. Reinhart received the Int Sled Dog Veterinary Med Assoc Research Award for his studies on the nutritional needs of Alaskan sled dogs.
Dr. Reinhart has published 250 scientific papers/abstracts, is co-editor of Recent Advances In Canine and Feline Nutrition, Volumes II and III, and an inventor on 14 US patents. The Ohio State College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences awarded him a distinguished alumni award for his contributions to the pet food industry. In 2007, Dr. Reinhart joined Mathile Institute where he leveraged his experience in the agricultural, human medical and pet food industries to help alleviate hunger and malnutrition in children. He developed feeding programs and nutritional research studies with young children and reproductive age women in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, India, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Ecuador and Peru. Over 15,000 children and women are receiving nutritional benefit from these efforts. In 2014, Ohio State inducted Dr. Reinhart into the Animal Sciences Hall of Fame for his leadership in the animal nutrition sector and efforts to combat human malnutrition. In 2016 Greg joined the Blue Buffalo pet food company as the SVP of Research & Development. General Mills acquired Blue Buffalo in 2018 and Greg continued in his role until retiring from General Mills in 2021. In 2021 Greg joined Pet Honesty, a leading provider of pet supplements, as its VP of Research & Development.
