Cats’ Home Range, Dumb Puppy Adopters. Stupid Dog Owners with Bad Equipment, Eagle Battles
How far do Cats wander and travel & how big is their home turf? What not to do when you adopt an older puppy or dog? Deborah describes a Golden Doodle adoption that went very wrong involving traffic coyotes and trauma because the people would not follow instructions, and keep the dog, who was new to them, on leash and close till she truly trusted and knew them. It takes a few weeks; not a few hours! Stupid owner award should go to the family with the just weaned pup being passed roughly by wild kids at the crowded music festival along with their young fetch playing dog who was made to play across blankets and picnic spreads while on a FLEXI LEASH, & PRONG COLLAR. Both devices should be banned and never used together. Big thanks to OWL for saving 2 bald eagles locked in a talon battle. If you want to see American Bald Eagles come to Vancouver, BC, Canada in the fall and help us count them!

00:00:02.180 --> 00:00:03.980
Announcer: This is Pet Life Radio.
00:00:03.980 --> 00:00:14.540
Announcer: Let's talk pets.
00:00:14.540 --> 00:00:19.120
Deborah Wolfe: Hello, you're listening to Animal Party Pet Life Radio.
00:00:19.728 --> 00:00:20.528
Deborah Wolfe: And it's...
00:00:20.528 --> 00:00:22.608
Deborah Wolfe: Oh, I've just got so much to talk about today.
00:00:22.608 --> 00:00:24.208
Deborah Wolfe: I don't even know what to start with.
00:00:24.208 --> 00:00:31.388
Deborah Wolfe: My first thing is going to be the correct fact that went out all over the place that I think is terribly wrong.
00:00:31.388 --> 00:00:32.688
Deborah Wolfe: That's my first thing.
00:00:32.688 --> 00:00:36.848
Deborah Wolfe: But later in the show, I'm going to tell you about some people.
00:00:36.848 --> 00:00:38.288
Deborah Wolfe: Oh my goodness.
00:00:38.288 --> 00:00:39.748
Deborah Wolfe: People, people, people.
00:00:39.748 --> 00:00:49.128
Deborah Wolfe: If you get a new dog, whether it's a little puppy or a medium puppy or an older puppy or a dog, listen to me on this.
00:00:49.128 --> 00:00:55.728
Deborah Wolfe: Because when you get it from a breeder or a rescue place and they tell you, do this, do this, do this, follow the instructions.
00:00:55.728 --> 00:01:05.908
Deborah Wolfe: Because if you don't, total mayhem ensues and I will tell you all about some people who could not follow instructions and what happened.
00:01:05.908 --> 00:01:08.568
Deborah Wolfe: Unlucky for me, it's all a good ending.
00:01:08.568 --> 00:01:12.708
Deborah Wolfe: Everybody's okay and the people are no longer in my life.
00:01:12.988 --> 00:01:21.328
Deborah Wolfe: But I will tell you all about what may be the stupidest dog adoption I've ever seen, close to it.
00:01:21.328 --> 00:01:21.608
Deborah Wolfe: All right.
00:01:21.608 --> 00:01:22.908
Deborah Wolfe: Well, we'll talk about that later in the show.
00:01:22.908 --> 00:01:24.808
Deborah Wolfe: But I'm going to start with correcting a misperception.
00:01:24.808 --> 00:01:26.148
Deborah Wolfe: A fact came out.
00:01:26.148 --> 00:01:27.128
Deborah Wolfe: It was all over the news.
00:01:27.128 --> 00:01:31.008
Deborah Wolfe: It was all over social media and where they're getting this information is baffling.
00:01:31.008 --> 00:01:35.188
Deborah Wolfe: But what they've said, and I know they said it in meaning to do well.
00:01:35.188 --> 00:01:38.428
Deborah Wolfe: They're trying to tell you to spay and neuter your cat.
00:01:38.428 --> 00:01:40.008
Deborah Wolfe: Yeah, do that.
00:01:40.008 --> 00:01:41.248
Deborah Wolfe: Do that, do that, do that.
00:01:41.968 --> 00:01:45.848
Deborah Wolfe: Don't wait till it's a year or two years, same for a dog.
00:01:45.848 --> 00:01:47.308
Deborah Wolfe: I have a dog who delivered here.
00:01:47.308 --> 00:01:48.948
Deborah Wolfe: She's a guest of my kennel.
00:01:48.948 --> 00:01:52.448
Deborah Wolfe: She came for three days, stayed for over a month and gave birth to eight dogs.
00:01:52.448 --> 00:01:56.728
Deborah Wolfe: And the people were surprised because she's not a year old yet herself.
00:01:56.728 --> 00:01:57.388
Deborah Wolfe: Terrible.
00:01:57.388 --> 00:02:03.588
Deborah Wolfe: You don't breed a dog till it's two, but it can get pregnant at six months, at a year, at a year and a half.
00:02:03.588 --> 00:02:09.808
Deborah Wolfe: Just like a 15, 16, 17 year old girl, 14 year old girl, 13 year old girl might be able to get pregnant.
00:02:10.208 --> 00:02:11.428
Deborah Wolfe: You don't want that.
00:02:11.428 --> 00:02:13.228
Deborah Wolfe: It's not the right outcome.
00:02:13.228 --> 00:02:20.808
Deborah Wolfe: So cats can get pregnant really early, four months, five months, six months, and then again, two months later, and again, two months later, over and over and over and over.
00:02:20.808 --> 00:02:23.308
Deborah Wolfe: So really, spay and neuter your cats.
00:02:23.308 --> 00:02:34.568
Deborah Wolfe: But the thing that they said is that an intact male cat, a tomcat, a cat with all his parts, male boy cat, will go off looking for ladies.
00:02:34.568 --> 00:02:35.448
Deborah Wolfe: And that part's true.
00:02:36.208 --> 00:02:41.928
Deborah Wolfe: But then they said he can go up to three miles to find a mate.
00:02:41.928 --> 00:02:43.748
Deborah Wolfe: Well, that's not right.
00:02:43.748 --> 00:02:46.048
Deborah Wolfe: That's not even close to right.
00:02:46.048 --> 00:03:01.828
Deborah Wolfe: In Montreal, they did this study where they put GPS tracking on cats who were owned by people but were allowed to kind of roam around, just do whatever they want, in and out cat doors, hang out on balconies, patios, visit neighbors, do whatever in the city, in the suburb of the city.
00:03:02.368 --> 00:03:10.968
Deborah Wolfe: And they found that a three-mile radius is actually the cat's territory, okay?
00:03:10.968 --> 00:03:15.388
Deborah Wolfe: So the cat each day when they're young and healthy, and these aren't even intact ones.
00:03:15.388 --> 00:03:18.248
Deborah Wolfe: These are just random, some intact, some not.
00:03:18.248 --> 00:03:25.048
Deborah Wolfe: They will patrol an area that they consider their home turf that can be up to three miles.
00:03:25.048 --> 00:03:28.348
Deborah Wolfe: So the three miles is a stat from something else.
00:03:29.088 --> 00:03:31.868
Deborah Wolfe: It's about where a cat considers it lives.
00:03:31.868 --> 00:03:38.848
Deborah Wolfe: So if your cat goes missing, it's probably within those three miles, probably at a neighbor's house, probably thinks it has another home.
00:03:38.848 --> 00:03:42.528
Deborah Wolfe: They may think they're doing the right thing and locked it inside when it was visiting.
00:03:42.528 --> 00:03:44.148
Deborah Wolfe: They may think it's their cat.
00:03:44.148 --> 00:03:45.788
Deborah Wolfe: That's happened a lot.
00:03:45.788 --> 00:03:48.928
Deborah Wolfe: Cat redistribution network, I call it.
00:03:48.928 --> 00:03:53.908
Deborah Wolfe: But besides that three-mile number, it doesn't really fit.
00:03:53.908 --> 00:03:55.368
Deborah Wolfe: And some cats will have a lower range.
00:03:55.428 --> 00:04:00.068
Deborah Wolfe: You know, they'll just go to the neighbor's and back, or three blocks, or one block, or five blocks.
00:04:00.068 --> 00:04:02.648
Deborah Wolfe: Depends on the cat, his fitness, his age.
00:04:02.648 --> 00:04:07.528
Deborah Wolfe: And if he's intact, his range will be farther.
00:04:07.528 --> 00:04:08.668
Deborah Wolfe: So what does that mean for you?
00:04:08.668 --> 00:04:11.008
Deborah Wolfe: That means you may think he's funny and cute and all that.
00:04:11.008 --> 00:04:15.628
Deborah Wolfe: You may not be too troubled by his reproduction, which occurs out of sight.
00:04:15.628 --> 00:04:18.588
Deborah Wolfe: But there's going to be unwanted kittens and cats.
00:04:18.588 --> 00:04:24.188
Deborah Wolfe: There's going to be possible injury to him through fighting with other males.
00:04:24.708 --> 00:04:30.168
Deborah Wolfe: There's going to be possible injury to him because he's going to go beyond his three mile home turf.
00:04:30.168 --> 00:04:31.568
Deborah Wolfe: Oh, way beyond.
00:04:31.568 --> 00:04:34.388
Deborah Wolfe: Way, way, way beyond.
00:04:34.388 --> 00:04:41.708
Deborah Wolfe: In fact, one cat unrelated to mating, but a cat named India Spade Female went missing for eight years.
00:04:41.708 --> 00:04:47.188
Deborah Wolfe: And how far away was she when they microchipped, they scanned her microchip when she was found in a different city?
00:04:47.368 --> 00:04:49.368
Deborah Wolfe: 165 kilometers.
00:04:49.948 --> 00:04:56.368
Deborah Wolfe: So cats can travel and they can get some serious mileage on them.
00:04:56.368 --> 00:05:03.468
Deborah Wolfe: And if a male sniffs the air and the wind conditions are right, he could smell a female from way further than three miles.
00:05:03.468 --> 00:05:06.888
Deborah Wolfe: So don't be thinking your cat's safe if he's intact.
00:05:06.888 --> 00:05:11.028
Deborah Wolfe: If he's intact, he is saying to the whole cat world, pick me.
00:05:11.028 --> 00:05:12.088
Deborah Wolfe: You want to go?
00:05:12.088 --> 00:05:12.968
Deborah Wolfe: You want to go?
00:05:12.968 --> 00:05:16.008
Deborah Wolfe: That's what he's saying to all the other boy cats who are intact.
00:05:16.008 --> 00:05:17.028
Deborah Wolfe: Let's fight.
00:05:17.548 --> 00:05:22.968
Deborah Wolfe: He's also setting off a scent that attracts all that and his scent travels for miles.
00:05:23.088 --> 00:05:41.988
Deborah Wolfe: In addition to all that, he will do anything to get to a female in heat, including, and this is my number one worry for all of you, he will cross a highway, he will cross a road, he will cross train tracks, he will run over and through and into anything to get to her.
00:05:41.988 --> 00:05:45.648
Deborah Wolfe: He'll run into a pack of dogs to get to her if she's in a yard with dogs.
00:05:45.748 --> 00:05:47.688
Deborah Wolfe: He will do whatever.
00:05:47.688 --> 00:06:02.648
Deborah Wolfe: So please, please, neuter, spay your cats so they don't become part of this incredible over cat population, but also so your guy, your cool cat doesn't get killed.
00:06:02.648 --> 00:06:05.248
Deborah Wolfe: I just want to give you a few stats on the cat situation.
00:06:05.248 --> 00:06:06.128
Deborah Wolfe: Let's see.
00:06:06.128 --> 00:06:12.768
Deborah Wolfe: Well, this cat was missing for eight years, Indy, and 165 miles it traveled.
00:06:12.768 --> 00:06:17.388
Deborah Wolfe: It used to be called Houdini as a nickname, so we can guess what it used to do.
00:06:20.268 --> 00:06:23.068
Deborah Wolfe: It was microchipped, it was friendly, all that.
00:06:23.068 --> 00:06:38.428
Deborah Wolfe: But the SPCA that was interviewed on behalf of these people, the ones that were responsible for reuniting the cat from one city to another, said in the cases of dogs missing, 60 percent are reunited with their owners.
00:06:38.428 --> 00:06:47.308
Deborah Wolfe: Now, most of us put dog tags on our dogs, but those can be broken off, chewed off, fall off, disintegrate, be unreadable.
00:06:47.308 --> 00:06:51.148
Deborah Wolfe: Some of us put tattoos on the inside our dog's ears, our cat's ears.
00:06:51.148 --> 00:06:52.208
Deborah Wolfe: That's a good thing.
00:06:52.208 --> 00:06:53.668
Deborah Wolfe: That's really good.
00:06:53.668 --> 00:06:55.028
Deborah Wolfe: But not everybody can see them.
00:06:55.028 --> 00:06:58.468
Deborah Wolfe: Sometimes hair grows over, sometimes they're kind of illegible.
00:06:58.468 --> 00:07:00.448
Deborah Wolfe: Then there's the microchip.
00:07:00.448 --> 00:07:09.408
Deborah Wolfe: Well, even when dogs are microchipped, which is more than cats, 60 percent of them are found.
00:07:10.868 --> 00:07:16.808
Deborah Wolfe: But cats, only 10 percent ever get returned to their real owner.
00:07:16.808 --> 00:07:20.548
Deborah Wolfe: So if you love your cat, neuter your cat.
00:07:20.548 --> 00:07:23.828
Deborah Wolfe: 90 percent of those that go missing never come back.
00:07:23.828 --> 00:07:25.748
Deborah Wolfe: And you don't want that to happen to you.
00:07:25.748 --> 00:07:31.528
Deborah Wolfe: All right, everybody, we're going to go to break and we're going to talk about why I'm so mad at these people.
00:07:31.528 --> 00:07:31.968
Deborah Wolfe: All right.
00:07:31.968 --> 00:07:34.628
Deborah Wolfe: Stay tuned on Animal Party Pet Life Radio.
00:07:40.395 --> 00:07:44.875
Deborah Wolfe: This is Deborah Wolfe, host of Animal Party, on Pet Life Radio.
00:07:44.875 --> 00:07:47.955
Deborah Wolfe: You know the expression, cats have nine lives?
00:07:47.955 --> 00:07:50.275
Deborah Wolfe: Well, what if you can give them one more?
00:07:50.275 --> 00:07:55.555
Deborah Wolfe: The Give Them Ten Movement is on a mission, to help give cats an extra life.
00:07:55.555 --> 00:07:56.375
Deborah Wolfe: How?
00:07:56.375 --> 00:07:58.195
Deborah Wolfe: With spay and neuter.
00:07:58.195 --> 00:08:03.355
Deborah Wolfe: Spaying or neutering your cat helps them live a longer, healthier life.
00:08:03.355 --> 00:08:06.775
Deborah Wolfe: And it helps control free-roaming cat populations too.
00:08:06.775 --> 00:08:13.635
Deborah Wolfe: Learn more about the benefits of spay and neuter, and meet Scooter, the neutered cat, at givethemten.org.
00:08:13.635 --> 00:08:15.015
Deborah Wolfe: That's givethemten.org.
00:08:20.155 --> 00:08:22.535
Announcer: Let's talk pets on petliferadio.com.
00:08:33.932 --> 00:08:35.492
Deborah Wolfe: Hello!
00:08:35.492 --> 00:08:36.872
Deborah Wolfe: You're back on Animal Party-
00:08:36.872 --> 00:08:38.412
Deborah Wolfe: Pet Life Radio.
00:08:38.412 --> 00:08:40.412
Deborah Wolfe: And I'm going to cover a bunch of things here.
00:08:40.412 --> 00:08:47.232
Deborah Wolfe: Okay, so we got a dog, puppy, ten months old, golden doodle, lovely dog, socialized to what she knows.
00:08:47.232 --> 00:08:59.872
Deborah Wolfe: People she knows, dog she knows, the farm she lives on, she's been on a few outings, she's been to the groomer a few times, she's had the vet visit her in her home, so she has no bad association with the car, loves the car.
00:09:00.592 --> 00:09:07.692
Deborah Wolfe: And it's just a generally lovable dog, slightly on the shy side, but I mean slight.
00:09:07.692 --> 00:09:13.812
Deborah Wolfe: You know, every dog, I mean, it's like a 50-50 line, they're either bold or shy, and she's right in the middle, right?
00:09:13.812 --> 00:09:21.232
Deborah Wolfe: Once you know her, she jumps all over you, but when she doesn't know you, she's a little bit slow to warm up, just a little.
00:09:21.232 --> 00:09:25.252
Deborah Wolfe: If you're a woman or a girl, and you talk hi and baby talk, she'll warm up right away.
00:09:25.252 --> 00:09:28.332
Deborah Wolfe: If you're standing next to someone she knows, she'll warm up right away.
00:09:28.332 --> 00:09:34.952
Deborah Wolfe: But if you're a big loud man, she's never met, you're gesturing wildly and screaming, she's not going to like you.
00:09:34.952 --> 00:09:37.952
Deborah Wolfe: Now, I'm foreshadowing what's going to come.
00:09:37.952 --> 00:09:45.472
Deborah Wolfe: So these people call and they say their dog died, and they want to get a new dog, same breed, Golden Doodle, and do I have any?
00:09:45.472 --> 00:09:48.472
Deborah Wolfe: At the time, I had two, but they took their time trying to decide.
00:09:48.472 --> 00:09:50.892
Deborah Wolfe: A few days went by and then I had one.
00:09:51.232 --> 00:09:52.812
Deborah Wolfe: I told them, yeah, I'll hold it for you.
00:09:52.812 --> 00:09:55.612
Deborah Wolfe: Put down your non-refundable deposit and you can come get the dog.
00:09:56.132 --> 00:10:03.252
Deborah Wolfe: And they made arrangements to come from, you know, across from Vancouver Island to Vancouver and then drive out to my farm to get this dog.
00:10:03.252 --> 00:10:05.452
Deborah Wolfe: Lovely dog, her name's Ashley.
00:10:05.452 --> 00:10:07.252
Deborah Wolfe: Mary Kate and Ashley were the two dogs.
00:10:07.252 --> 00:10:08.972
Deborah Wolfe: They were sort of the last two to go.
00:10:08.972 --> 00:10:20.052
Deborah Wolfe: And sometimes when the puppies don't sell at a young age, I just spend more time with them, train them, let them grow up a bit and then sell them to people, place them in homes with people for less money.
00:10:20.832 --> 00:10:26.712
Deborah Wolfe: It's a lot of work for me and I feed them and vaccinate them, keep them, groom them, care for them, put a lot of money into it.
00:10:26.712 --> 00:10:30.132
Deborah Wolfe: But then they go for a lot less as a year old trained dog.
00:10:30.132 --> 00:10:31.812
Deborah Wolfe: And that's what she was heading for.
00:10:31.812 --> 00:10:36.472
Deborah Wolfe: You know, maybe someone who has mobility issues, older person, person without a yard.
00:10:36.472 --> 00:10:40.952
Deborah Wolfe: There's all kinds of reasons why you want a dog that's already house trained and has the basics.
00:10:40.952 --> 00:10:42.252
Deborah Wolfe: So that's what she was waiting for.
00:10:42.252 --> 00:10:49.092
Deborah Wolfe: And the other one went to a family that had never owned a dog before with little kids and everything's great with them.
00:10:49.092 --> 00:10:51.292
Deborah Wolfe: They took the dog and perfect.
00:10:51.292 --> 00:10:52.012
Deborah Wolfe: Okay.
00:10:52.012 --> 00:10:52.852
Deborah Wolfe: So now we have one left.
00:10:52.932 --> 00:10:57.412
Deborah Wolfe: They come together and it just so happens I was away at the pet food warehouse when they came.
00:10:57.412 --> 00:10:58.792
Deborah Wolfe: Timing wasn't quite right.
00:10:58.792 --> 00:11:00.132
Deborah Wolfe: So they got her from my staff.
00:11:00.132 --> 00:11:01.312
Deborah Wolfe: All that's good.
00:11:01.312 --> 00:11:07.172
Deborah Wolfe: And I was on the phone with them, texting them and giving them very specific instructions.
00:11:07.172 --> 00:11:26.252
Deborah Wolfe: As I do with all the people who adopt any dog or puppy from me, no matter how calm or old or trained or young or innocent or whatever, I always say this dog doesn't know you, doesn't know your home, doesn't know your car, doesn't know all the people in your life and all the smells.
00:11:26.252 --> 00:11:29.432
Deborah Wolfe: For the first few days, everything's going to be new.
00:11:29.432 --> 00:11:34.332
Deborah Wolfe: The dog's brain is going to be so busy, you might want to call me and say, why is she so tired?
00:11:34.332 --> 00:11:36.292
Deborah Wolfe: She was so perky at your place.
00:11:36.292 --> 00:11:42.732
Deborah Wolfe: The dog will be tired from thinking and processing and trying to take in all the new information that's bombarding it.
00:11:42.732 --> 00:11:52.332
Deborah Wolfe: It's like if they just took you, all of a sudden you didn't know what was going on and you landed in a new country, you wake up and you're in a new place and everyone speaks a new language, everything's different.
00:11:52.332 --> 00:11:53.092
Deborah Wolfe: What are you going to do?
00:11:53.092 --> 00:11:58.812
Deborah Wolfe: You're going to just kind of hang back and watch, try and get acclimatized, right?
00:11:58.812 --> 00:12:08.032
Deborah Wolfe: So I told them this and I said, you know, because she's not two months, three months, four months old, I would suggest you keep her unleashed for a whole month.
00:12:08.032 --> 00:12:09.472
Deborah Wolfe: She's 10 months old now.
00:12:09.472 --> 00:12:12.172
Deborah Wolfe: She's likely to come into heat in the next few months.
00:12:12.172 --> 00:12:19.212
Deborah Wolfe: So I would suggest you get her spayed right away because that requires you keep her unleashed for a couple of weeks anyway until her stitches heal.
00:12:19.212 --> 00:12:21.032
Deborah Wolfe: And then that time overlaps.
00:12:21.032 --> 00:12:22.852
Deborah Wolfe: You could bond with her, get her to know you.
00:12:22.852 --> 00:12:24.492
Deborah Wolfe: She'll be unleashed the whole time.
00:12:24.492 --> 00:12:29.552
Deborah Wolfe: But then when you're ready to let her go, you don't have to worry about mating and other dogs and all those issues.
00:12:29.552 --> 00:12:31.572
Deborah Wolfe: And by then she'll know you really well.
00:12:31.572 --> 00:12:34.172
Deborah Wolfe: So keep her unleashed for three to four weeks.
00:12:34.172 --> 00:12:35.172
Deborah Wolfe: Okay.
00:12:35.172 --> 00:12:36.292
Deborah Wolfe: They take the dog.
00:12:36.292 --> 00:12:38.012
Deborah Wolfe: I get a call at three o'clock.
00:12:38.012 --> 00:12:40.972
Deborah Wolfe: Oh my God, we let her go and she's loose in the backyard.
00:12:40.972 --> 00:12:42.112
Deborah Wolfe: She's hiding behind a bush.
00:12:42.112 --> 00:12:45.152
Deborah Wolfe: We don't understand it because she was so bonded with us.
00:12:45.792 --> 00:12:46.812
Deborah Wolfe: We were able to pick her up.
00:12:46.812 --> 00:12:59.532
Deborah Wolfe: We were able to carry her into the Bosley's pet store where we gave her a bath and we carried her into the pet, the other pet store where we bought things and we took her around and we thought she really liked us and now she's hiding from us.
00:12:59.532 --> 00:13:01.032
Deborah Wolfe: What do we do?
00:13:01.032 --> 00:13:02.432
Deborah Wolfe: So I'm like, okay.
00:13:02.432 --> 00:13:06.112
Deborah Wolfe: First of all, I'm listening to this thinking, why are you overwhelming this dog?
00:13:06.112 --> 00:13:07.672
Deborah Wolfe: She had a bath before she left.
00:13:07.672 --> 00:13:09.132
Deborah Wolfe: Why are you giving her another one?
00:13:09.132 --> 00:13:10.632
Deborah Wolfe: And why are you carrying her?
00:13:10.632 --> 00:13:11.832
Deborah Wolfe: She's 60 pounds.
00:13:11.832 --> 00:13:12.392
Deborah Wolfe: Are you nuts?
00:13:12.952 --> 00:13:13.892
Deborah Wolfe: Maybe 50 pounds.
00:13:13.892 --> 00:13:16.052
Deborah Wolfe: She's a long, lean, adolescent dog.
00:13:16.052 --> 00:13:18.212
Deborah Wolfe: But you know, big dog, what are you doing?
00:13:18.212 --> 00:13:19.032
Deborah Wolfe: Why are you carrying her?
00:13:19.032 --> 00:13:20.772
Deborah Wolfe: This all sounds crazy to me.
00:13:20.772 --> 00:13:23.932
Deborah Wolfe: And they said, they'd already said she's great in the car and she really likes us.
00:13:23.932 --> 00:13:24.852
Deborah Wolfe: Everything's going great.
00:13:24.852 --> 00:13:25.672
Deborah Wolfe: Okay.
00:13:25.672 --> 00:13:27.472
Deborah Wolfe: So I said to them, all right.
00:13:27.472 --> 00:13:30.292
Deborah Wolfe: Well, he says, they won't even come to me, the man said.
00:13:30.292 --> 00:13:32.672
Deborah Wolfe: So I said, okay, she doesn't really know a lot of men.
00:13:32.852 --> 00:13:34.472
Deborah Wolfe: Not a lot of men, no men work here.
00:13:34.472 --> 00:13:36.612
Deborah Wolfe: They're all women who work at my place.
00:13:36.612 --> 00:13:39.752
Deborah Wolfe: So, you know, men visit from time to time.
00:13:40.232 --> 00:13:43.472
Deborah Wolfe: But other than the vet, she's never really met a man steadily.
00:13:43.472 --> 00:13:45.432
Deborah Wolfe: And that wasn't the best impression.
00:13:45.432 --> 00:13:57.052
Deborah Wolfe: So how about pick a woman from your circle or a young girl, a teenage girl, and have them go out with a leash and just hang out in the backyard, maybe have a snack, maybe have some cookies with her, and just wait for the dog to come out.
00:13:57.052 --> 00:13:59.392
Deborah Wolfe: Dog will come out, bring a ball.
00:13:59.392 --> 00:14:00.472
Deborah Wolfe: So they do that.
00:14:00.472 --> 00:14:03.952
Deborah Wolfe: And I get this text, oh, thank goodness, everything's fine.
00:14:03.952 --> 00:14:04.972
Deborah Wolfe: The dog's good.
00:14:04.972 --> 00:14:06.572
Deborah Wolfe: She's back with us.
00:14:06.572 --> 00:14:07.372
Deborah Wolfe: Everything's great.
00:14:08.172 --> 00:14:11.092
Deborah Wolfe: So I reiterate my instructions.
00:14:11.092 --> 00:14:13.232
Deborah Wolfe: Keep her on a leash for a month.
00:14:13.232 --> 00:14:16.892
Deborah Wolfe: I've upped it now to four weeks, and I'm being very clear with the people.
00:14:16.892 --> 00:14:25.292
Deborah Wolfe: Keep her on leash in the house, out of the house, in the yard, wherever you go, until she loves and adores and trusts you, which may take a month.
00:14:25.292 --> 00:14:27.772
Deborah Wolfe: Do not let her loose anymore.
00:14:27.772 --> 00:14:28.972
Deborah Wolfe: Make sure the collar fits.
00:14:28.972 --> 00:14:32.932
Deborah Wolfe: I go through this whole thing and I'm talking to them, texting them, my staff is as well.
00:14:32.932 --> 00:14:34.112
Deborah Wolfe: Everything seems fine.
00:14:35.352 --> 00:14:41.092
Deborah Wolfe: All right, stay tuned, I'm going to tell you what happened next to this 10 month old golden doodle.
00:14:41.092 --> 00:14:44.252
Deborah Wolfe: But it did involve coyotes, I could tell you that.

Announcer: PetLifeRadio.com Hello!
00:16:27.455 --> 00:16:30.535
Deborah Wolfe: You're back on Animal Party Pet Life Radio.
00:16:30.535 --> 00:16:32.415
Deborah Wolfe: Alright, so here we are with this dog.
00:16:32.447 --> 00:16:33.987
Deborah Wolfe: The people finally got her back on leash.
00:16:33.987 --> 00:16:34.707
Deborah Wolfe: They're all happy.
00:16:34.707 --> 00:16:35.347
Deborah Wolfe: She's great.
00:16:35.347 --> 00:16:36.007
Deborah Wolfe: She loves them.
00:16:36.187 --> 00:16:36.867
Deborah Wolfe: He loves her.
00:16:36.867 --> 00:16:38.027
Deborah Wolfe: Everybody's good.
00:16:38.027 --> 00:16:40.587
Deborah Wolfe: The man is a fairly large man, six feet, maybe.
00:16:40.587 --> 00:16:42.027
Deborah Wolfe: Maybe 180, 200 pounds.
00:16:42.027 --> 00:16:42.907
Deborah Wolfe: I don't know.
00:16:42.907 --> 00:16:44.007
Deborah Wolfe: Fairly big guy.
00:16:44.007 --> 00:16:47.767
Deborah Wolfe: And the woman he's with is not small, let's just say.
00:16:47.767 --> 00:16:51.827
Deborah Wolfe: She probably weighs what I weigh and half again, you know?
00:16:52.087 --> 00:16:52.647
Deborah Wolfe: Bigger gal.
00:16:53.007 --> 00:17:00.107
Deborah Wolfe: So, they're not small, unintimidating people like the people who work at my kennel, who are super fit young girls and me, right?
00:17:00.107 --> 00:17:01.947
Deborah Wolfe: So, a little bit of an adjustment on that.
00:17:01.947 --> 00:17:05.427
Deborah Wolfe: But, you know, generally speaking, the dog's doing okay.
00:17:05.427 --> 00:17:07.007
Deborah Wolfe: Middle of the night, get a call.
00:17:07.007 --> 00:17:11.187
Deborah Wolfe: I'm coming back from singing at a festival and I get this call on the phone.
00:17:11.387 --> 00:17:12.307
Deborah Wolfe: Where's your phone?
00:17:12.307 --> 00:17:13.367
Deborah Wolfe: Haven't you been on the phone?
00:17:13.367 --> 00:17:18.387
Deborah Wolfe: These people, they're stranded in a different city and the dog is loose and there's coyotes.
00:17:19.167 --> 00:17:21.527
Deborah Wolfe: Oh my God, no.
00:17:21.527 --> 00:17:23.087
Deborah Wolfe: So what did they do?
00:17:23.087 --> 00:17:29.007
Deborah Wolfe: They took the dog, not home, like I told them, take her home, said, let her stay at home.
00:17:29.007 --> 00:17:31.207
Deborah Wolfe: Don't be doing huge outings and walks and hikes.
00:17:31.207 --> 00:17:32.247
Deborah Wolfe: Don't go to strange places.
00:17:32.247 --> 00:17:35.027
Deborah Wolfe: Let her get used to your home territory.
00:17:35.027 --> 00:17:37.527
Deborah Wolfe: Have her on a leash, even in the house, even at home.
00:17:37.527 --> 00:17:38.747
Deborah Wolfe: They didn't do that.
00:17:38.747 --> 00:17:40.967
Deborah Wolfe: They went to some other house.
00:17:40.967 --> 00:17:43.327
Deborah Wolfe: And I said, why'd you take her to a strange house?
00:17:43.327 --> 00:17:45.407
Deborah Wolfe: When I finally did connect with these people.
00:17:45.407 --> 00:17:46.847
Deborah Wolfe: And they said, it's not a strange house.
00:17:46.947 --> 00:17:48.627
Deborah Wolfe: It's my mother's house.
00:17:48.627 --> 00:17:51.207
Deborah Wolfe: Okay, it's strange to the dog.
00:17:51.207 --> 00:17:53.707
Deborah Wolfe: It doesn't smell like any of you.
00:17:53.707 --> 00:17:57.327
Deborah Wolfe: And you don't know about the fences or anything else at this house.
00:17:57.327 --> 00:17:59.687
Deborah Wolfe: Oh no, it's fully fenced, she said.
00:17:59.687 --> 00:18:01.247
Deborah Wolfe: Well, clearly not.
00:18:01.247 --> 00:18:05.547
Deborah Wolfe: Because the dog they took to their mother's house.
00:18:05.547 --> 00:18:07.687
Deborah Wolfe: And then the story gets really sketchy.
00:18:07.687 --> 00:18:14.867
Deborah Wolfe: They kept saying she was, she was on a harness and leashed and on a patio and in a fenced yard.
00:18:14.867 --> 00:18:23.627
Deborah Wolfe: So if all that's true, if she was on a harness that fit and she was on a leash and she was tied, all things I wouldn't recommend for a new dog you just adopted, but whatever.
00:18:23.627 --> 00:18:26.187
Deborah Wolfe: I said, put a collar on her, put a leash on her and stay with her.
00:18:26.187 --> 00:18:27.007
Deborah Wolfe: Okay.
00:18:27.007 --> 00:18:30.787
Deborah Wolfe: In a strange yard, in a strange town, not their town, another town.
00:18:32.387 --> 00:18:37.947
Deborah Wolfe: And it's a country town, a farm town called Chilliwack, where there's a lot of coyotes, right?
00:18:37.947 --> 00:18:39.047
Deborah Wolfe: Lots.
00:18:39.047 --> 00:18:50.067
Deborah Wolfe: So the dog stuck out on a balcony by itself, tied up on a loose harness in a yard that clearly wasn't fully fenced, listening to coyotes yip yip yip yip yip.
00:18:50.067 --> 00:19:01.127
Deborah Wolfe: It freaked out, got out of the harness, got out of whatever contraption, jumped over the little balcony trellis or whatever the heck they thought was containing it, and then ran off.
00:19:01.127 --> 00:19:04.887
Deborah Wolfe: So clearly the yard wasn't fenced, although she kept saying to me, it was fenced, it was fenced.
00:19:04.887 --> 00:19:06.987
Deborah Wolfe: Well, no.
00:19:06.987 --> 00:19:08.887
Deborah Wolfe: Dogs don't go through fences.
00:19:08.887 --> 00:19:10.307
Deborah Wolfe: They're not ghosts.
00:19:10.307 --> 00:19:11.947
Deborah Wolfe: There has to be a gap.
00:19:11.947 --> 00:19:14.287
Deborah Wolfe: Anyway, so the dog was loose, running through the streets of Chilliwack.
00:19:14.347 --> 00:19:15.547
Deborah Wolfe: So we had to go out and catch it.
00:19:15.547 --> 00:19:20.307
Deborah Wolfe: And, you know, my first reaction was to just go there right away.
00:19:20.307 --> 00:19:26.207
Deborah Wolfe: But then I realized, no, no, no, no, this dog, I mean, hours later had been panicking all night in a field.
00:19:26.207 --> 00:19:28.447
Deborah Wolfe: They'd been trying to chase it.
00:19:28.447 --> 00:19:42.827
Deborah Wolfe: So I called the person who'd last worked with the dog the most, that works on my staff, got her to come and picked a puppy dog that this dog's friends with, Besties, another Golden Doodle a little bit older.
00:19:42.827 --> 00:20:06.367
Deborah Wolfe: I took the two, the young lady and the young woman and the other puppy, and we went out to this field and it's 25-acre field, massive, highway on one side, main Trans-Canada highway, big-time highway on one side, busy street on the other, fruit stands all the way along, steady traffic, a nightmare for a country dog who's never been loose with traffic.
00:20:07.047 --> 00:20:09.107
Deborah Wolfe: And she's somewhere in this 25-acre.
00:20:09.107 --> 00:20:13.527
Deborah Wolfe: So we get there and I've already texted ahead, we're coming and this is what we're going to do.
00:20:13.527 --> 00:20:15.727
Deborah Wolfe: And please stay out of sight and please stay out of the way.
00:20:15.727 --> 00:20:31.807
Deborah Wolfe: And so here's the man standing there and all this gigantic masculine energy, arms flailing, big, big, big, big, big, loud, telling us that dog, that dog's crazy, that dog's violent, that dog's aggressive, that dog can never be off leash.
00:20:31.807 --> 00:20:33.767
Deborah Wolfe: That dog should, what happened to that dog?
00:20:33.767 --> 00:20:34.947
Deborah Wolfe: Did you abuse that dog?
00:20:34.947 --> 00:20:35.687
Deborah Wolfe: He's yelling at us.
00:20:36.167 --> 00:20:42.047
Deborah Wolfe: And I said to him, please stay away from Kia, that's the woman who's helping, and Peachy, the puppy.
00:20:42.047 --> 00:20:43.167
Deborah Wolfe: Please stay away from them.
00:20:43.167 --> 00:20:44.507
Deborah Wolfe: We don't want your scent on them.
00:20:44.507 --> 00:20:46.607
Deborah Wolfe: We don't want her seeing you with them.
00:20:46.607 --> 00:20:47.787
Deborah Wolfe: Please come with me.
00:20:47.787 --> 00:20:49.667
Deborah Wolfe: Oh no, I'm gonna show her where the dog is.
00:20:49.667 --> 00:20:51.667
Deborah Wolfe: I'm gonna show her where we last saw her.
00:20:51.667 --> 00:20:52.567
Deborah Wolfe: Excuse me.
00:20:52.567 --> 00:20:54.127
Deborah Wolfe: We don't need to know where she last was.
00:20:54.127 --> 00:20:56.247
Deborah Wolfe: She could be anywhere in this 25 acres.
00:20:56.247 --> 00:20:57.427
Deborah Wolfe: She's gonna come to us.
00:20:57.427 --> 00:21:00.327
Deborah Wolfe: That dog doesn't come, that dog won't come.
00:21:00.327 --> 00:21:01.467
Deborah Wolfe: No, it will come to us.
00:21:01.467 --> 00:21:03.127
Deborah Wolfe: It just won't come to you because it doesn't know you.
00:21:03.127 --> 00:21:04.087
Deborah Wolfe: Oh, she knows us.
00:21:04.487 --> 00:21:08.967
Deborah Wolfe: Anyway, so finally, I had my good friend with me and he walked.
00:21:08.967 --> 00:21:10.767
Deborah Wolfe: I said, can you get this guy away from us?
00:21:10.767 --> 00:21:14.907
Deborah Wolfe: And so he started to make small talk with the guy and get him to walk away from us.
00:21:14.907 --> 00:21:22.907
Deborah Wolfe: So we entered the field as the offensive man was leaving, all angry and upset and his wife standing there waiting for her money back.
00:21:22.907 --> 00:21:24.707
Deborah Wolfe: She's all angry too.
00:21:24.707 --> 00:21:35.607
Deborah Wolfe: So they pick up a dog for a really adoption price, $600, $3,000 value dog, drained, vaccinated, ready to go, perfect dog.
00:21:35.607 --> 00:21:41.947
Deborah Wolfe: They lose it and they want their money back, even though there's a non-refundable deposit and clearly you need to return the dog if you want your money back.
00:21:41.947 --> 00:21:46.347
Deborah Wolfe: And they've now cost me all this money and wages and gas and time and people.
00:21:46.347 --> 00:21:51.947
Deborah Wolfe: And yeah, God, because we tried to catch it the night before, also with a different person who didn't know the dog.
00:21:51.947 --> 00:21:53.547
Deborah Wolfe: So but the man kept interfering.
00:21:53.547 --> 00:21:58.067
Deborah Wolfe: So here we are in the field and finally he leaves us alone.
00:21:58.067 --> 00:22:01.827
Deborah Wolfe: I go to one side of the field, the lady with the puppy go to the other.
00:22:02.487 --> 00:22:04.967
Deborah Wolfe: And it wasn't even two minutes.
00:22:04.967 --> 00:22:12.647
Deborah Wolfe: This dog came flying toward us, greeting us like crazy, jumping all over us, put the leash on or no problem.
00:22:12.647 --> 00:22:14.987
Deborah Wolfe: We're walking back to the car and there's Mr.
00:22:14.987 --> 00:22:17.167
Deborah Wolfe: standing there with his arms out again.
00:22:17.167 --> 00:22:22.227
Deborah Wolfe: So I text my friend, can you please get him to get out of sight and get out of the way so we can go to the car?
00:22:22.227 --> 00:22:32.687
Deborah Wolfe: Because this dog is scared of him and that woman and their angry upset energy and their whatever was going on with them, maybe the loss of their dog and their grief.
00:22:32.687 --> 00:22:38.907
Deborah Wolfe: They chose to give this dog almost identical name to the dog they just lost and that's something I can caution you on.
00:22:38.907 --> 00:22:54.627
Deborah Wolfe: If you lose a dog you're really attached to, it's a good idea to get something a little bit different, different gender, different color, different age, something and give it a different name so you're not constantly expecting what you had from your old dog who knew you and trusted you and fit you like a glove.
00:22:54.627 --> 00:22:57.287
Deborah Wolfe: You can't expect that from a brand new puppy who hardly knows you.
00:22:57.727 --> 00:22:59.027
Deborah Wolfe: It's unrealistic.
00:22:59.027 --> 00:23:05.147
Deborah Wolfe: So, okay, so the dog comes, the people go away, it jumps into the car, no problem.
00:23:05.147 --> 00:23:14.367
Deborah Wolfe: It's sitting on my girl's lap there and I'm trying to deal with these people and oh man, you won't believe what they said next.
00:23:14.367 --> 00:23:18.627
Deborah Wolfe: Stay tuned, we're going to go to break and come back on Animal Party Pet Life Radio.

Deborah Wolfe: Pet Life Radio.
00:24:09.467 --> 00:24:11.647
Announcer: petliferadio.com.
00:24:23.708 --> 00:24:26.168
Deborah Wolfe: So, here we are in the story.
00:24:26.168 --> 00:24:31.628
Deborah Wolfe: I'm back, caught the dog, dog's safe, matted, dirty, just disgusting, but good.
00:24:31.628 --> 00:24:35.328
Deborah Wolfe: Okay, she's a beautiful blonde, looks like Bear Fawcett, lovely golden lot.
00:24:35.328 --> 00:24:38.048
Deborah Wolfe: Not so lovely right now, matted, mucky, okay.
00:24:38.048 --> 00:24:43.208
Deborah Wolfe: But she's in the car and she's safe, she drank a little bit, she ate some cookies.
00:24:43.208 --> 00:24:45.728
Deborah Wolfe: Everything's good, she's sitting in there and I'm about to leave.
00:24:45.728 --> 00:24:47.468
Deborah Wolfe: But of course they want their money back.
00:24:47.468 --> 00:24:50.808
Deborah Wolfe: So instead of asking nicely, they start accusing me of all sorts.
00:24:51.928 --> 00:24:59.608
Deborah Wolfe: And one of the things they say to me is that dog is anorexic, which I'm sorry, but I just started laughing.
00:24:59.608 --> 00:25:03.248
Deborah Wolfe: I mean, first of all, she's perfect weight, perfect.
00:25:03.248 --> 00:25:07.248
Deborah Wolfe: So they're a little bit on the heavy side, maybe their old dog was too, I don't know.
00:25:07.248 --> 00:25:09.048
Deborah Wolfe: Most people have overweight dogs.
00:25:09.048 --> 00:25:12.608
Deborah Wolfe: This dog's an adolescent, she runs every day on five acres.
00:25:12.608 --> 00:25:14.968
Deborah Wolfe: No matter how much you feed her, she keeps running.
00:25:14.968 --> 00:25:18.768
Deborah Wolfe: She's half poodle, so she doesn't have a huge appetite like a golden retriever would.
00:25:19.468 --> 00:25:23.248
Deborah Wolfe: But she eats well and you can't see her ribs.
00:25:24.588 --> 00:25:26.948
Deborah Wolfe: She's long and lean and still growing, right?
00:25:26.948 --> 00:25:29.648
Deborah Wolfe: Okay, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
00:25:29.648 --> 00:25:31.468
Deborah Wolfe: Anorexic?
00:25:31.468 --> 00:25:38.748
Deborah Wolfe: Well, I mean, am I supposed to imagine her standing in front of a mirror saying, oh, I'm too fat, I can't eat today?
00:25:38.748 --> 00:25:42.768
Deborah Wolfe: Am I supposed to imagine her on Facebook saying, oh, all the other girls are thinner?
00:25:42.768 --> 00:25:44.208
Deborah Wolfe: I better get thinner.
00:25:44.208 --> 00:25:46.568
Deborah Wolfe: I mean, anorexia is a disease of the mind.
00:25:46.568 --> 00:25:48.568
Deborah Wolfe: This dog doesn't have a body image problem.
00:25:49.008 --> 00:25:50.208
Deborah Wolfe: This is nuts.
00:25:50.208 --> 00:25:53.328
Deborah Wolfe: Then she said, we fed her four meals and she ate them all.
00:25:53.328 --> 00:25:56.588
Deborah Wolfe: Well, she was probably trying to please you.
00:25:56.588 --> 00:25:57.808
Deborah Wolfe: Maybe she threw up after.
00:25:57.808 --> 00:25:59.688
Deborah Wolfe: I mean, that's a lot of food.
00:25:59.688 --> 00:26:01.008
Deborah Wolfe: Crazy, crazy stuff.
00:26:01.008 --> 00:26:01.588
Deborah Wolfe: All right.
00:26:01.588 --> 00:26:09.488
Deborah Wolfe: So they tried to insult me on other ways, and once they figured out I was going to give them their money back, they relaxed and left.
00:26:09.488 --> 00:26:12.608
Deborah Wolfe: But they actually said to me at one point, we don't want this dog.
00:26:12.608 --> 00:26:15.628
Deborah Wolfe: I'm like, I wouldn't give you this dog.
00:26:15.628 --> 00:26:17.068
Deborah Wolfe: You can just walk away.
00:26:18.028 --> 00:26:20.528
Deborah Wolfe: Some people shouldn't have dogs.
00:26:20.528 --> 00:26:28.368
Deborah Wolfe: And if you love a dog and you're an old dog person, and you've always had dogs like this lady says, when you get a new dog, start from scratch.
00:26:28.368 --> 00:26:34.368
Deborah Wolfe: Give the dog a chance to get to know you, and your place, and your people, and the things around you.
00:26:34.368 --> 00:26:39.308
Deborah Wolfe: You shouldn't have it off leash for a month, even if it was trained off leash, which this dog is.
00:26:39.308 --> 00:26:44.128
Deborah Wolfe: When we got back, we let it off leash, and we did a bunch of recall, and we filmed one, we sent them the video.
00:26:44.128 --> 00:26:44.948
Deborah Wolfe: Look, she comes.
00:26:45.068 --> 00:26:47.368
Deborah Wolfe: You said, this dog could never be let off leash ever.
00:26:47.368 --> 00:26:55.088
Deborah Wolfe: Well, we're letting her off leash minutes after she's recovered from the trauma of her night with you, and she's still coming beautifully.
00:26:55.088 --> 00:27:00.388
Deborah Wolfe: In fact, she came in a 25-acre field with traffic all around and coyotes.
00:27:00.388 --> 00:27:02.568
Deborah Wolfe: This is a well-trained dog lady.
00:27:02.568 --> 00:27:05.268
Deborah Wolfe: So their response was, well, I guess she didn't know us yet.
00:27:05.268 --> 00:27:07.688
Deborah Wolfe: Yes, that's my point.
00:27:07.688 --> 00:27:11.588
Deborah Wolfe: When you get a new dog, give it the time.
00:27:11.588 --> 00:27:14.228
Deborah Wolfe: It'll be pretty subdued the first few days.
00:27:14.628 --> 00:27:16.288
Deborah Wolfe: There's a lot going on.
00:27:16.288 --> 00:27:17.748
Deborah Wolfe: Where do I live?
00:27:17.748 --> 00:27:19.088
Deborah Wolfe: Where do I eat?
00:27:19.088 --> 00:27:20.048
Deborah Wolfe: Where's my home?
00:27:20.048 --> 00:27:21.348
Deborah Wolfe: Who are my people?
00:27:21.348 --> 00:27:24.248
Deborah Wolfe: Where are all the things I used to know?
00:27:24.248 --> 00:27:25.208
Deborah Wolfe: It's a lot.
00:27:25.208 --> 00:27:32.148
Deborah Wolfe: After a few days, there's only one new thing each day, and they'll perk up and they can process that easily and everything is great.
00:27:32.148 --> 00:27:39.828
Deborah Wolfe: When you first start to do walks with your new dog, go from your house a door or two away and turn around and come back.
00:27:39.828 --> 00:27:42.188
Deborah Wolfe: The next time, a few doors away, turn around and come back.
00:27:42.608 --> 00:27:47.968
Deborah Wolfe: The next time, a half a block, then a block, then two blocks, you've just taught your dog how to find its way home.
00:27:47.968 --> 00:27:48.848
Deborah Wolfe: That's what you want.
00:27:48.848 --> 00:27:51.968
Deborah Wolfe: You want basics at the beginning.
00:27:51.968 --> 00:28:03.948
Deborah Wolfe: You want to introduce it to the most important people, the people who live at your house, the people who visit frequently, not every other person that you see twice a year who happens to love dogs, they'll wait on that.
00:28:03.948 --> 00:28:14.128
Deborah Wolfe: The first week or two, you want them to know your pack, who's important and who comes and goes without barking, who matters in this circle, who can feed them.
00:28:14.128 --> 00:28:19.348
Deborah Wolfe: Don't give strangers cookies to feed your dog the first week or two, that doesn't make sense to them.
00:28:19.348 --> 00:28:23.388
Deborah Wolfe: So just go slow, go slow.
00:28:23.388 --> 00:28:26.068
Deborah Wolfe: Okay, so before we end this show, I wanted to say two more things.
00:28:26.068 --> 00:28:30.108
Deborah Wolfe: I wanted to talk about one of the stupidest things I've seen.
00:28:30.108 --> 00:28:39.388
Deborah Wolfe: Okay, so it's festival season and some of you know I'm a singer, so I go out and I sing bands and jams and open mics and festivals and whatever.
00:28:39.908 --> 00:28:42.788
Deborah Wolfe: And I like to go catch live music all over the place.
00:28:42.788 --> 00:28:48.268
Deborah Wolfe: And so recently I was somewhere at a music in the park kind of thing.
00:28:48.268 --> 00:28:49.548
Deborah Wolfe: And what do I see?
00:28:49.548 --> 00:28:55.008
Deborah Wolfe: I see a puppy that I'm guessing isn't even eight weeks, maybe just.
00:28:55.008 --> 00:29:01.988
Deborah Wolfe: It's got that kind of dazed eye thing where they can't really track the motion of a ball and they don't really see far away yet.
00:29:01.988 --> 00:29:05.768
Deborah Wolfe: So under 10 weeks for sure, I would say seven weeks, little puppy.
00:29:05.768 --> 00:29:06.628
Deborah Wolfe: So where do they take them?
00:29:06.748 --> 00:29:10.888
Deborah Wolfe: To this enormous park with all these people with dogs and mayhem, right?
00:29:10.888 --> 00:29:12.228
Deborah Wolfe: That's the first problem.
00:29:12.228 --> 00:29:13.588
Deborah Wolfe: He's overwhelmed.
00:29:13.588 --> 00:29:15.648
Deborah Wolfe: Children are pulling at him and picking him up.
00:29:15.648 --> 00:29:20.868
Deborah Wolfe: And even if he's meant to be a dog that loves kids, it's too much for an animal infant.
00:29:20.868 --> 00:29:29.048
Deborah Wolfe: So again, these people, new dog, and you do want to show it the life you mean it to have, but slowly, not all at once.
00:29:29.048 --> 00:29:31.328
Deborah Wolfe: Okay, so here they are in the blanket.
00:29:31.328 --> 00:29:36.948
Deborah Wolfe: And then, oh my gosh, I see their older dog, who's not old.
00:29:36.948 --> 00:29:38.648
Deborah Wolfe: This young dog kind of pulls a lot.
00:29:38.648 --> 00:29:41.468
Deborah Wolfe: You can see it's pretty high for a play, full playing with the kids.
00:29:41.468 --> 00:29:43.568
Deborah Wolfe: But what have they got it wearing?
00:29:43.568 --> 00:29:48.188
Deborah Wolfe: A prong collar, which, I mean, I would like to have them all banned.
00:29:48.188 --> 00:29:49.468
Deborah Wolfe: They banned them in sandage.
00:29:49.468 --> 00:29:53.128
Deborah Wolfe: There's places in the world where you can't even put that on a dog.
00:29:53.128 --> 00:29:56.088
Deborah Wolfe: Rightly so, they dig into the flesh.
00:29:56.088 --> 00:29:59.368
Deborah Wolfe: They cause blisters and sores and infections.
00:29:59.368 --> 00:30:04.468
Deborah Wolfe: And it's just not necessary to give your dog a shot of adrenaline when he's misbehaving already.
00:30:04.468 --> 00:30:06.248
Deborah Wolfe: A little pain to go with everything.
00:30:06.248 --> 00:30:08.748
Deborah Wolfe: It's really not a good tool.
00:30:08.748 --> 00:30:19.468
Deborah Wolfe: But not just a prong collar on a well-behaved social dog in a social atmosphere where kids are tempting it and throwing balls for it and it's pulling, pulling, pulling on this stupid collar.
00:30:19.468 --> 00:30:21.268
Deborah Wolfe: A flexi leash.
00:30:21.268 --> 00:30:23.808
Deborah Wolfe: Now, they've banned those in places too.
00:30:23.808 --> 00:30:35.488
Deborah Wolfe: Usually they ban them because they hurt people because flexi leashes get stuck or they can't be recoiled quickly enough and they sometimes have like a rope-like effect around a leg and it can really, really hurt people.
00:30:35.488 --> 00:30:49.568
Deborah Wolfe: So, I don't like flexi leashes at all but I especially think they should never be combined with a prong collar because the flexi is designed to let your dog have as much room as he wants and the prong collar is going to give him pain every time it tugs.
00:30:49.568 --> 00:30:50.808
Deborah Wolfe: It's just like a tug of war.
00:30:50.808 --> 00:30:54.308
Deborah Wolfe: It's completely boy, boy, boy, boy.
00:30:54.308 --> 00:30:55.828
Deborah Wolfe: What are people thinking?
00:30:55.828 --> 00:31:05.568
Deborah Wolfe: I wish the people who sold the equipment were better at giving instructions and I wish the people with the animals were better at following instructions.
00:31:05.568 --> 00:31:07.948
Deborah Wolfe: So those are my dumb, dumb awards for today.
00:31:07.948 --> 00:31:11.908
Deborah Wolfe: If you get a new dog, listen to the people who gave it to you or sold it to you.
00:31:11.908 --> 00:31:13.768
Deborah Wolfe: Do what they say.
00:31:13.768 --> 00:31:17.008
Deborah Wolfe: If they say keep it on leash for a month, do it.
00:31:18.168 --> 00:31:22.348
Deborah Wolfe: If they say take it home right away and give it some quiet time, do it.
00:31:22.348 --> 00:31:30.268
Deborah Wolfe: If you have to go to some other place where you're not sure of the fences and clearly they weren't sure of the fences, keep them tied to you.
00:31:30.268 --> 00:31:33.768
Deborah Wolfe: I had even said to them, tie a leash around your waist and another one to the dog.
00:31:33.768 --> 00:31:37.008
Deborah Wolfe: That way you won't lose her again until she trusts you.
00:31:37.008 --> 00:31:46.708
Deborah Wolfe: So please people be careful with your new animals because they're, they don't know where they are and they need your help in figuring that out.
00:31:46.708 --> 00:31:50.748
Deborah Wolfe: Alright so one last news item before we go.
00:31:50.748 --> 00:32:00.328
Deborah Wolfe: Just a big salute to the people at OWL, which is a rescue group here in Vancouver that deals with birds and they got called out to a very strange situation.
00:32:00.328 --> 00:32:11.888
Deborah Wolfe: Some neighbors in Surrey said there were two American bald eagles locked in a talon battle shrieking and screaming and not ending the battle.
00:32:11.888 --> 00:35:20.908
Deborah Wolfe: So they called the rescue and I don't know how long it took to make that call and I don't know how long it took for them to drive over but there's footage of this woman wearing very long gloves and geared up for scratches separating the two eagles and they just don't want to separate and when she gets them separate one of them flies off one of them has an eye injury and they did one that stayed and they treat that one and it's now been released but the one who flew off flew straight into a scooter rider like how how weird is that now the scooter riders okay and the eagles okay both eagles are fine and well done OWL thank you for being there for that little wildlife incident so for those of you listening from south of the border you're thinking American Eagle what's that American Eagle doing up in Canada well we got a lot of them a lot of them if it's something on your bucket list where you thought to yourself that you really love that bird and you'd love to see them I remember being in Florida being out on a boat and seeing one hundreds of feet in the air and people being all excited and getting their binoculars and be thinking what you never seen a bunch of eagles in a tree like 17 you never seen a bunch of eagles catching fish out of a lake really because up here we got a load of them loads of them and if you come in the fall they have this thing called the Eagle Count you can look it up online Brackendale is one of the places but you can actually become one of the volunteers where they give you a number and a clipboard and you go out and you they teach you how to track you know count because they like to count them and know how many thousands of eagles are coming here for the annual salmon run in the fall you can see a tree well you will see I get I guarantee it if you come to the Eagle Hunt and the Eagle Count you will see trees just decorated with them almost like Christmas lights you look at a green tree and there's white white white white white white white all over it because they're all sitting there just fishing casually fishing the spawning salmon yeah it's a pretty incredible site Hatsik Lake is another place where I've seen a lot of eagles and down where I live on this little street called Hayward Street which goes along Hayward Lake at the bottom of Silvermere Lake and Hayward Lake it splits the two and it's near a dam so a lot of salmon go there spawn and die and when you drive through that that road almost every tall tree has eagles in it and if you walk down along the banks they're just feet from you to hunting and scavenging and when you look under the water the water is crystal clear and ice cold and the bottoms all pebbles pink pebbles and you see these giant skeletons of of the salmon that have spawned and died and the eagles have picked clean huge bones it's pretty incredible so if you ever want to take a trip to see eagles come on up to Vancouver British Columbia Canada and if you do it in the fall you can be part of the count and help us figure out how many eagles there are in the world and what they're up to.
