00:00:43.280 --> 00:00:46.360
Tim Link: She says, she must have been very, very young when that happened.

00:00:46.600 --> 00:00:51.920

Tim Link: And then we'll pick her brain a little bit about writing.

00:01:14.580 --> 00:01:17.240
Tim Link: What was it like to write the book and how did that go?

00:01:17.260 --> 00:01:20.980
Tim Link: And I'm sure she done and dusted it in about two days, so it worked out just fine.

00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:22.680
Tim Link: But we're gonna pick her brain about that as well.

00:01:23.140 --> 00:01:25.120

00:02:29.193 --> 00:02:36.673
Tim Link: Welcome back to Animal Writes on Pet Life Radio. Joining me now is entertainment expert, she's an actress, model, spokesperson, and now the author of the new book, Dream On...

00:02:36.673 --> 00:02:43.093
Tim Link: Now Deliver, the No-Nonsense Guide to Achieving Success in the entertainment industry, Patricia Kara.

00:02:43.113 --> 00:02:44.033
Tim Link: Welcome to the show.

00:02:44.053 --> 00:02:45.853
Patricia Kara: Thank you for having me.

00:02:47.413 --> 00:02:48.253
Tim Link: Oh, we're excited.

00:02:48.273 --> 00:02:49.773
Tim Link: I mean, I've been waiting and waiting and waiting.

00:02:49.793 --> 00:02:50.533
Tim Link: I was tickled.

00:02:50.573 --> 00:02:53.133
Tim Link: I was happy when you said you'd come on the show.

00:02:53.153 --> 00:02:54.293
Tim Link: So I was excited about that.

00:02:54.453 --> 00:03:01.613
Tim Link: And of course, I'm excited about the book, too, and the message in this Deliver and everything.

00:03:01.633 --> 00:03:06.353
Patricia Kara: It is a book that I wish I had when I started out in the business when I was 15, 16 years old.

00:03:06.833 --> 00:03:10.793
Patricia Kara: I started out in Chicago, didn't know anybody in the business, didn't know anything.

00:03:11.073 --> 00:03:15.653
Patricia Kara: I pulled out the yellow pages and that was my start of trying to figure it out.

00:03:16.113 --> 00:03:18.293
Patricia Kara: So I know how tough it was for me.

00:03:18.413 --> 00:03:32.193
Patricia Kara: I'm hoping this book will help the newbies coming into the entertainment industry and helping them navigate and figuring out how to get an agent, how to audition and for them to actually see if this is right for them.

00:03:32.213 --> 00:03:33.253
Patricia Kara: It's not for everybody.

00:03:33.293 --> 00:03:38.853
Patricia Kara: Once you start learning the ins and outs, not everybody is destined to be in the entertainment industry.

00:03:39.633 --> 00:03:49.173
Tim Link: And I believe that my thought pattern on it also is you have an idea of what you want to do and even if you're successful, it may not turn out to be the thing that you end up doing.

00:03:50.113 --> 00:03:50.993
Patricia Kara: Absolutely.

00:03:51.013 --> 00:04:04.753
Patricia Kara: I mean, I started out with modeling and I learned so much along the way that then I started getting into TV hosting and acting and then I ended up pitching shows and then I ended up managing people all while still doing everything else.

00:04:05.093 --> 00:04:11.253
Patricia Kara: But I started learning about all these other avenues within the entertainment industry that I had no idea about.

00:04:11.493 --> 00:04:16.833
Patricia Kara: So it's really cool to start figuring out like what I really wanted to do and what else I could do.

00:04:17.273 --> 00:04:18.753
Patricia Kara: So there's a lot out there.

00:04:19.073 --> 00:04:21.673
Patricia Kara: It's just a matter of figuring it out along the way.

00:04:21.973 --> 00:04:22.613
Tim Link: Absolutely.

00:04:22.653 --> 00:04:30.493
Tim Link: And I would imagine that in the early days, especially when you're trying to get started, part of it's you're wanting to try different things, but also you're just trying to live.

00:04:32.333 --> 00:04:33.893
Tim Link: There's more to life than ramen noodles.

00:04:35.033 --> 00:04:38.153
Tim Link: If they had ramen noodles back in the Yellow Pages days, I don't know.

00:04:38.653 --> 00:04:39.893
Patricia Kara: I think they did actually.

00:04:39.913 --> 00:04:40.353
Patricia Kara: They did.

00:04:40.813 --> 00:04:41.113
Patricia Kara: Yes.

00:04:41.333 --> 00:04:42.793
Patricia Kara: I remember I had them back then.

00:04:43.053 --> 00:04:43.833
Tim Link: There you go.

00:04:43.853 --> 00:04:45.013
Tim Link: Well, they never expire.

00:04:45.033 --> 00:04:46.133
Tim Link: So it works out all right.

00:04:46.673 --> 00:05:03.293
Tim Link: But when you're taking these opportunities, how do you decide, you know, is it a matter of I want to stick to a path and a goal that I want to accomplish, say I want to be an actor, or is it more of I'm going to take opportunities as they come up to get a little sample and a little flavor of things or maybe have to take these opportunities?

00:05:03.893 --> 00:05:05.333
Tim Link: How do you go about sorting through that?

00:05:05.353 --> 00:05:09.993
Tim Link: And then is there a benefit to having a broad scope on everything that you can do?

00:05:10.253 --> 00:05:15.453
Patricia Kara: I think for me, I loved knowing and learning all the different things and knowing there were other possibilities.

00:05:15.793 --> 00:05:20.933
Patricia Kara: I just wanted to be in the entertainment industry, didn't know necessarily what that meant.

00:05:20.993 --> 00:05:26.973
Patricia Kara: I knew I would see girls, you know, in magazines like Kristy Turlington and Cathy Ireland.

00:05:27.493 --> 00:05:32.033
Patricia Kara: But the more I learned, the more I wanted to immerse myself even more.

00:05:32.053 --> 00:05:34.453
Patricia Kara: And I remember people telling me you can only do one thing.

00:05:34.633 --> 00:05:36.353
Patricia Kara: They're like, if you're going to be a model, be a model.

00:05:36.373 --> 00:05:38.813
Patricia Kara: If you're going to be an actor, be an actor or whatever it is.

00:05:38.893 --> 00:05:41.013
Patricia Kara: But I was like, well, why do I have to choose one?

00:05:41.133 --> 00:05:42.293
Patricia Kara: Why can't I do it all?

00:05:42.673 --> 00:05:47.293
Patricia Kara: To me, it's all entertainment based and there's no reason why you can't do it all.

00:05:47.613 --> 00:05:49.173
Patricia Kara: Now I think it's more acceptable.

00:05:49.193 --> 00:05:52.553
Patricia Kara: Now you see people like Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon.

00:05:52.573 --> 00:05:54.513
Patricia Kara: They do more than just acting.

00:05:54.813 --> 00:05:55.953
Patricia Kara: They're business women.

00:05:56.113 --> 00:05:58.013
Patricia Kara: And that's what I talk about in the book.

00:05:58.013 --> 00:05:58.693
Patricia Kara: It's a business.

00:05:58.713 --> 00:06:00.693
Patricia Kara: A lot of people think it's glitz and glamour.

00:06:00.753 --> 00:06:03.533
Patricia Kara: And there's part of that along the way.

00:06:03.813 --> 00:06:04.833
Patricia Kara: But it is a business.

00:06:04.993 --> 00:06:08.033
Patricia Kara: And if you want longevity in the business, you have to treat it like a business.

00:06:08.073 --> 00:06:09.813
Patricia Kara: So I talk a lot about that.

00:06:10.173 --> 00:06:12.873
Tim Link: Yeah, I think that's really interesting in the entertainment industry.

00:06:12.893 --> 00:06:13.833
Tim Link: You hit it right on the head.

00:06:13.853 --> 00:06:19.553
Tim Link: And the fact that I look back over the years and it was more of, if you're a model, you're a model.

00:06:19.573 --> 00:06:20.233
Tim Link: Don't try to act.

00:06:20.533 --> 00:06:23.073
Tim Link: You know, if you're an actor, okay, then act.

00:06:23.093 --> 00:06:24.773
Tim Link: Don't try to cut an album.

00:06:24.993 --> 00:06:25.633
Tim Link: Album.

00:06:28.093 --> 00:06:29.953
Patricia Kara: Hey, we're talking yellow pages and albums.

00:06:30.053 --> 00:06:30.893
Tim Link: I love it.

00:06:30.913 --> 00:06:31.233
Tim Link: That's right.

00:06:31.253 --> 00:06:32.313
Tim Link: Throwback.

00:06:32.553 --> 00:06:33.153
Tim Link: That's right.

00:06:33.173 --> 00:06:34.473
Tim Link: And I think you did one of these.

00:06:34.593 --> 00:06:36.533
Tim Link: Didn't you do one of these Time Life?

00:06:40.693 --> 00:06:42.253
Patricia Kara: Pop goes to 70s music.

00:06:42.533 --> 00:06:43.273
Tim Link: There you go.

00:06:43.313 --> 00:06:43.733
Tim Link: I knew it.

00:06:43.793 --> 00:06:44.993
Tim Link: Come a full circle again.

00:06:45.013 --> 00:06:45.573
Tim Link: I love it.

00:06:45.613 --> 00:06:46.093
Tim Link: I love it.

00:06:46.433 --> 00:06:48.793
Tim Link: But yeah, I think that in the early days, you're right.

00:06:48.813 --> 00:06:57.293
Tim Link: It was you pretty much were whether it was right or wrong, got pigeonholed into a certain area and that's where they sort of wanted you to focus and that's all you could get out of.

00:06:57.493 --> 00:07:01.153
Tim Link: And then nowadays, it's sort of I look at it as like baseball.

00:07:01.173 --> 00:07:03.393
Tim Link: And you know, baseball used to be played one position.

00:07:03.413 --> 00:07:03.993
Tim Link: That's what you did.

00:07:03.993 --> 00:07:09.673
Tim Link: Now, you know, the more you make more money by playing, being a utility player, playing all over the place.

00:07:10.313 --> 00:07:20.793
Tim Link: And I think you were one of those, the leading edge on doing that because, you know, when I look through, I've got my little cheat sheet here, you know, you've done the Deal or No Deal, you know, case number, model number nine.

00:07:20.913 --> 00:07:21.333
Tim Link: Yeah.

00:07:21.633 --> 00:07:23.753
Tim Link: And then you've got Access Hollywood.

00:07:23.773 --> 00:07:26.113
Tim Link: You've done the movie thing, the Donny Osmond thing.

00:07:26.133 --> 00:07:32.673
Tim Link: We talked about the model and you've been spokesperson for, you know, numerous big companies AT&T, Unilever, Johnson & Johnson.

00:07:33.033 --> 00:07:40.713
Tim Link: And so I really look at you as someone who is very diverse, willing to try these things, do them all extremely well.

00:07:41.033 --> 00:07:42.653
Tim Link: And now with the book, Dream On...

00:07:42.653 --> 00:07:47.593
Tim Link: Now Deliver, you're sharing that knowledge with those who want to follow in your footsteps.

00:07:47.973 --> 00:07:57.933
Patricia Kara: And the book is something I, it was just a natural thing for me growing up as I was learning the business that I would always help somebody else because I knew how tough it was for me.

00:07:58.313 --> 00:08:01.453
Patricia Kara: So I wanted to make it a little easier for others around me.

00:08:01.473 --> 00:08:07.453
Patricia Kara: They were trying to figure their stuff out in the agency world and whatever it was in the entertainment.

00:08:07.673 --> 00:08:10.413
Patricia Kara: So as soon as I would have information, I would help somebody else.

00:08:10.853 --> 00:08:16.293
Patricia Kara: And then being on Deal or No Deal, I had more people coming to me asking those questions.

00:08:16.313 --> 00:08:19.993
Patricia Kara: And so over time, I started writing things and somebody planted the seed.

00:08:20.593 --> 00:08:21.453
Patricia Kara: You should write a book.

00:08:21.473 --> 00:08:22.793
Patricia Kara: I'm like, but I'm not a writer.

00:08:22.813 --> 00:08:23.513
Patricia Kara: I'm a talker.

00:08:25.133 --> 00:08:29.953
Patricia Kara: But eventually, the timing was right and it just it shifted.

00:08:30.013 --> 00:08:33.053
Patricia Kara: And I now is the time and I had all my notes.

00:08:33.073 --> 00:08:35.013
Patricia Kara: I'm like, I've got to get this out there.

00:08:35.033 --> 00:08:35.593
Patricia Kara: I've got to do it.

00:08:35.613 --> 00:08:38.093
Patricia Kara: It's been on my mind for so many years.

00:08:38.793 --> 00:08:45.293
Patricia Kara: It's time to stop talking about it and get that book out there and and help those who are trying to figure it out.

00:08:45.413 --> 00:08:46.253
Patricia Kara: It's not easy.

00:08:46.273 --> 00:08:47.753
Patricia Kara: So yeah.

00:08:47.813 --> 00:08:50.233
Tim Link: And when you talk about the you know, the book is in print.

00:08:50.273 --> 00:08:54.373
Tim Link: Now you said you're a talker, you know, you like talking to people and do things.

00:08:54.513 --> 00:08:55.793
Tim Link: Now you can do the audio book.

00:08:56.073 --> 00:08:57.413
Patricia Kara: So I'm about to.

00:08:57.673 --> 00:08:58.553
Tim Link: There you go.

00:08:58.653 --> 00:08:59.393
Tim Link: That's what I like.

00:08:59.413 --> 00:09:00.113
Tim Link: That's what I do.

00:09:01.633 --> 00:09:03.613
Tim Link: And then of course, the e-book says perfect way.

00:09:03.873 --> 00:09:04.933
Tim Link: Glanced out the book here.

00:09:04.953 --> 00:09:16.013
Tim Link: One of the things that caught, you know, as I was reading through it, one of the paragraphs of that you wrote in the script in the very early days, I'm going to read this real quick so it really hit me just the right way.

00:09:16.033 --> 00:09:22.553
Tim Link: It says everyone needs some supporting people in their lives to cheer loudly through the successes and the failures.

00:09:22.853 --> 00:09:28.153
Tim Link: So if you're still looking for those people, let this book, in my words, be among the loudest cheerleaders.

00:09:30.233 --> 00:09:31.833
Tim Link: Oh, I mean, it was perfect.

00:09:31.853 --> 00:09:37.133
Tim Link: It was perfect because, you know, a lot of times we read books about how to teach and learn from these things.

00:09:37.153 --> 00:09:44.473
Tim Link: And the books I write are full of stories, but they're also how to teach you how to how to work with your, you know, dogs and cats and animals, things like this.

00:09:45.113 --> 00:09:47.813
Tim Link: And I try to make it relatable and share the stories behind it.

00:09:48.133 --> 00:09:56.393
Tim Link: But for you to come out and not just put out a book that says, hey, learn from me, I've been doing this for 30 years, follow these steps and this may help you out.

00:09:56.713 --> 00:09:57.533
Tim Link: It was more than that.

00:09:57.573 --> 00:10:03.393
Tim Link: It was more of, hey, I'm writing this book because I want you to succeed and I'm going to be your biggest cheerleader.

00:10:03.413 --> 00:10:07.493
Tim Link: And that hit home with me because you know your industry better than I do.

00:10:07.513 --> 00:10:22.433
Tim Link: It's yes, there are a lot of networking, there's a lot of friends, a lot of things you develop, a good people in the industry, but it's also pretty cutthroat, you know, and not always people want to share their ideas or their successes or, or even their agents.

00:10:22.453 --> 00:10:27.593
Tim Link: I even learned that in the literary area, you know, trying to publish a book when looking for a new agent.

00:10:28.033 --> 00:10:42.093
Tim Link: I would reach out to people I thought were my friends and they're like, oh, you know, they don't want to share their age and information because the competition, even though we were still friends and colleagues and we did events, speaking events and stuff like this together.

00:10:42.533 --> 00:10:56.193
Tim Link: So I imagine your industry, it's kind of finding that balance of good people that you can count on that will always be in your corner and that always cheerlead you, but also trying to avoid those that perhaps are not in your cheerleading camp.

00:10:56.473 --> 00:11:00.853
Patricia Kara: And it really bums me out to hear that because I think there's enough for everybody.

00:11:00.873 --> 00:11:02.193
Patricia Kara: There's enough work for everybody.

00:11:02.553 --> 00:11:07.653
Patricia Kara: And for me, I have friends that were in competition, but I look at it like, I hope you get it.

00:11:07.673 --> 00:11:09.053
Patricia Kara: If I don't get it, I hope you get it.

00:11:09.413 --> 00:11:10.733
Patricia Kara: And it goes vice versa.

00:11:10.753 --> 00:11:13.193
Patricia Kara: And I'm always very open and willing to help my friends.

00:11:13.433 --> 00:11:18.513
Patricia Kara: Again, it's always been part of me and I don't understand people that don't have that in them.

00:11:18.913 --> 00:11:22.953
Patricia Kara: Again, I think there's something for everybody and it is hard.

00:11:22.953 --> 00:11:27.253
Patricia Kara: I think having a support system definitely helps and not everybody understands it.

00:11:27.593 --> 00:11:32.673
Patricia Kara: You might have people that support you, but don't understand the entertainment business because they may not be in it.

00:11:33.033 --> 00:11:35.933
Patricia Kara: So that's where you have to rely on yourself too.

00:11:35.993 --> 00:11:42.013
Patricia Kara: You have to really be that go-getter, have that determination if it's something you really want.

00:11:42.353 --> 00:11:52.153
Patricia Kara: You have to have those continuous conversations with yourself on motivating you to keep going because you're going to deal with rejection on a day-to-day basis.

00:11:52.273 --> 00:11:59.773
Patricia Kara: And sometimes not just once a day, many times a day, but you have to push through those moments and be your own cheerleader.

00:11:59.793 --> 00:12:09.733
Patricia Kara: And it's great if you have those people around you, but if you don't be your own cheerleader and just power through, and you figure it out.

00:12:10.853 --> 00:12:11.993
Tim Link: And they got you in their camp.

00:12:12.153 --> 00:12:13.353
Tim Link: So you always be their cheerleader.

00:12:13.373 --> 00:12:13.733
Patricia Kara: Always.

00:12:14.073 --> 00:12:14.833
Patricia Kara: Always.

00:12:15.053 --> 00:12:16.173
Patricia Kara: That's why we're doing this.

00:12:16.173 --> 00:12:24.733
Patricia Kara: That's why, you know, the book and having this conversation for me, I actually, right before I started talking to you, I met somebody who's doing a college project.

00:12:24.753 --> 00:12:32.073
Patricia Kara: It was a friend of a friend and we sat for an hour and had a Zoom call talking about the entertainment business and he really wants to be an actor.

00:12:32.093 --> 00:12:37.973
Patricia Kara: And I was so excited for him because he was telling me his hopes and dreams and what he's doing to make that happen.

00:12:38.273 --> 00:12:40.593
Patricia Kara: Just talking to him, I was so excited for him.

00:12:40.613 --> 00:12:43.393
Patricia Kara: I could see that he really, I could see him doing well.

00:12:43.593 --> 00:12:47.833
Patricia Kara: And I actually even said to him, I'm like, listen, I know some agencies in your area.

00:12:47.853 --> 00:12:57.133
Patricia Kara: If you're really serious about doing this and you're doing the work, I'll help you and give you some names and maybe it'll connect you and then you take it from there.

00:12:57.153 --> 00:12:57.753
Patricia Kara: It's up to you.

00:12:58.113 --> 00:13:01.653
Patricia Kara: I can give you so much, but then you've got to take it the rest of the way.

00:13:02.033 --> 00:13:06.673
Patricia Kara: But I love seeing those moments for people and having them succeed.

00:13:07.053 --> 00:13:10.953
Tim Link: Yeah, and your willingness to help push them in the right direction or make the right contacts.

00:13:11.273 --> 00:13:15.253
Tim Link: And one of the things you talked about in one of the chapters of the book is networking.

00:13:15.773 --> 00:13:17.813
Tim Link: Networking, networking, networking.

00:13:17.873 --> 00:13:33.513
Tim Link: And I've learned that through the years, no matter what your profession is, but definitely in the entertainment industry, it's getting to know as many people in different facets as you can, because you never know when you need that one person to help you with a situation or at least give you guidance or suggestions.

00:13:33.813 --> 00:13:43.193
Tim Link: Tell us a little bit about how networking came about, like in the early days, you know, when you're first starting and don't really know anybody compared to today.

00:13:43.213 --> 00:13:52.513
Tim Link: I mean, how do you develop that great network that people that are here for the moment that can help you out and then people that are there for the long haul that can support you and help you out?

00:13:53.053 --> 00:13:58.593
Patricia Kara: I have to say, I learned more about networking when I moved to LA because it is more common.

00:13:58.613 --> 00:14:00.913
Patricia Kara: When I lived in New York, it was a different animal.

00:14:00.933 --> 00:14:02.793
Patricia Kara: You had your agents, you go to your auditions.

00:14:03.273 --> 00:14:10.553
Patricia Kara: I didn't have to network as much, maybe network between, you know, when you're on the job and you're talking to the clients and you...

00:14:10.553 --> 00:14:17.353
Patricia Kara: network could mean just being kind, being professional and they will remember you for the next job.

00:14:18.033 --> 00:14:25.093
Patricia Kara: And you may get it, you may not, but it's having those conversations with people where people remember you and vice versa.

00:14:25.113 --> 00:14:29.333
Patricia Kara: There may be things that, you know, I could be helpful to you or you can be helpful to me.

00:14:29.353 --> 00:14:30.453
Patricia Kara: It goes both ways.

00:14:30.733 --> 00:14:40.033
Patricia Kara: But I've noticed as the years went on, I would see more and more in how networking helped and just getting to know different people in different genres.

00:14:40.593 --> 00:14:42.633
Patricia Kara: You never know how it's going to connect.

00:14:43.133 --> 00:14:45.093
Patricia Kara: And it may not show itself immediately.

00:14:45.113 --> 00:14:47.093
Patricia Kara: It may show itself down the line.

00:14:47.393 --> 00:14:51.033
Patricia Kara: It could be a month from now, it could be two years from now, it could be 10 years from now.

00:14:51.353 --> 00:14:53.153
Patricia Kara: But those moments count.

00:14:53.173 --> 00:15:01.793
Patricia Kara: I can't tell you how many times that has happened to me and it has helped me in my career, having those networking moments and building the relationships.

00:15:01.813 --> 00:15:04.693
Patricia Kara: That's what to me networking is, is building the relationships.

00:15:05.993 --> 00:15:06.713
Patricia Kara: Absolutely.

00:15:07.173 --> 00:15:07.533
Tim Link: Right.

00:15:07.853 --> 00:15:18.513
Tim Link: You know, I know it's difficult for some, you know, a lot of times, you know, from an outsider looking in, you think if someone's going to be a host of a show or an actor or something of this sort, then they've got to be an extrovert.

00:15:18.973 --> 00:15:22.373
Tim Link: You know, they've got to be out there and really willing to meet people.

00:15:22.653 --> 00:15:25.713
Tim Link: But in reality, I would say a majority of them are not.

00:15:25.973 --> 00:15:31.653
Tim Link: They are when they have to perform, but otherwise they're probably quiet, subdued and a little bit more of an introvert.

00:15:31.973 --> 00:15:34.793
Patricia Kara: I've seen that many a times, you'd be surprised.

00:15:35.733 --> 00:15:39.153
Patricia Kara: I definitely, I revert back and forth over time.

00:15:39.173 --> 00:15:42.733
Patricia Kara: Sometimes I'm more of an introvert, but mostly more of an extrovert.

00:15:43.133 --> 00:15:49.473
Patricia Kara: I think it's probably like the Greek in me, we're definitely extroverts and very lively and very talkative.

00:15:50.593 --> 00:15:55.753
Patricia Kara: So yeah, but you'd be surprised how many people in the entertainment business are introverts.

00:15:55.993 --> 00:16:01.873
Patricia Kara: And I think it's hard because once people get to a certain level, more people are coming at them.

00:16:01.933 --> 00:16:08.673
Patricia Kara: And I think they become even more introverted because they have so many people coming at them from all different directions.

00:16:08.693 --> 00:16:11.513
Patricia Kara: And then you're trying to figure out, okay, who are my real people?

00:16:11.833 --> 00:16:18.053
Patricia Kara: Who are the people that want me to do well, be well, and who are the ones that are just trying to ride my coattails?

00:16:18.273 --> 00:16:23.613
Patricia Kara: So it's that trying to navigate that part of it too, is such an interesting process.

00:16:23.633 --> 00:16:27.753
Patricia Kara: And yeah, you got to use your gut instincts on a lot of that stuff.

00:16:28.253 --> 00:16:29.353
Tim Link: Yeah, absolutely.

00:16:29.813 --> 00:16:33.693
Tim Link: So in the book, you also, one of the tidbits I picked up was the small jobs.

00:16:34.053 --> 00:16:37.133
Tim Link: There are no such things as small jobs, especially in those early days.

00:16:37.153 --> 00:16:54.593
Tim Link: And, and as I, yeah, and I mentioned early on, you know, it's more than just, you know, you want to eat a decent meal and not just ramen noodles, but it's more of the fact that really to get your foot in the door and to start figuring out what's out there and who will see me and what opportunities are there.

00:16:54.833 --> 00:16:58.193
Tim Link: I would imagine there's really is no such thing as a small job.

00:16:58.673 --> 00:17:04.413
Patricia Kara: Yeah, I think taking those opportunities helps you figure out what you want and what you don't want.

00:17:04.433 --> 00:17:17.193
Patricia Kara: And as you're working more and more and you're figuring those things out, as you get to a certain level, you can start saying, okay, this doesn't work for me or I don't necessarily like doing this, but I like this.

00:17:17.553 --> 00:17:18.933
Patricia Kara: So you start figuring it out.

00:17:18.953 --> 00:17:29.573
Patricia Kara: But I think if you want to be in the entertainment business, you have to be in the entertainment business and start working and learning and just figuring it out to get you to the next steps.

00:17:29.753 --> 00:17:31.013
Tim Link: Yeah, I think that's important.

00:17:31.133 --> 00:17:38.053
Tim Link: My niece is going to get tired of hearing me because I keep using these episodes as a platform to teach her.

00:17:39.093 --> 00:17:40.453
Patricia Kara: I get it, I get it.

00:17:43.613 --> 00:17:44.613
Patricia Kara: She'll thank you one day.

00:17:44.633 --> 00:17:45.253
Patricia Kara: She'll thank you.

00:17:45.573 --> 00:17:46.153
Tim Link: She will.

00:17:46.173 --> 00:17:49.733
Tim Link: She better remember me because Uncle Tim needs some help down the road.

00:17:49.933 --> 00:17:52.153
Tim Link: But yeah, she's a junior in college.

00:17:52.173 --> 00:17:55.733
Tim Link: She wants to be in the sports entertainment industry.

00:17:55.753 --> 00:17:59.873
Tim Link: She's thinking more of the agency being an agent out there.

00:17:59.893 --> 00:18:01.273
Tim Link: But it's still early days.

00:18:01.393 --> 00:18:04.513
Tim Link: And I keep driving home the fact that that's fantastic.

00:18:04.533 --> 00:18:06.173
Tim Link: Set a goal, set a path that you want to go on.

00:18:06.413 --> 00:18:09.133
Tim Link: But get in there, just get in there.

00:18:09.373 --> 00:18:21.273
Tim Link: Get with a network, a regional network, a local station, whatever gig, internship, whatever it is, get in there, get yourself known and get a flavor for everything that's out there.

00:18:21.293 --> 00:18:22.433
Tim Link: And you never know what's going to stick.

00:18:22.733 --> 00:18:27.193
Patricia Kara: Absolutely, because that's where she'll start networking and meeting different people and learning.

00:18:27.273 --> 00:18:31.373
Patricia Kara: And she might come across somebody who says, you know what, I really want to help you.

00:18:31.433 --> 00:18:32.493
Patricia Kara: What is it you want to do?

00:18:32.533 --> 00:18:36.673
Patricia Kara: Okay, I can connect you here or there, whether it's directly or indirectly.

00:18:37.073 --> 00:18:38.693
Patricia Kara: And that's what it's all about.

00:18:38.713 --> 00:18:42.953
Patricia Kara: Just getting yourself in those moments to be in front of those people at the right time.

00:18:42.993 --> 00:18:43.933
Patricia Kara: Timing is everything.

00:18:44.113 --> 00:18:45.633
Patricia Kara: And nothing is going to go from A to Z.

00:18:45.653 --> 00:18:50.093
Patricia Kara: You're not going to all of a sudden say, I want to be an actor and you're going to be this huge star.

00:18:50.233 --> 00:18:56.573
Patricia Kara: I think people have that sort of want that to happen or have that perception, but that's not how it works.

00:18:56.593 --> 00:18:57.793
Patricia Kara: You have to do the work.

00:18:57.933 --> 00:19:00.793
Patricia Kara: And it's a lot of hard work to get you to that level.

00:19:00.813 --> 00:19:02.073
Patricia Kara: You can't just go from A to Z.

00:19:02.193 --> 00:19:03.893
Patricia Kara: You have to do the work in between.

00:19:04.213 --> 00:19:04.673
Tim Link: That's it.

00:19:04.713 --> 00:19:05.733
Tim Link: You know what I was saying?

00:19:05.753 --> 00:19:08.613
Tim Link: That it took me 20 years to be an overnight cessation.

00:19:09.373 --> 00:19:10.073
Patricia Kara: Exactly.

00:19:13.873 --> 00:19:14.173
Tim Link: All right.

00:19:14.193 --> 00:19:15.513
Tim Link: We're going to take a quick commercial break.

Tim Link: Now Deliver, The No-Nonsense Guide to Achieving Success in the Entertainment Industry.

00:20:53.413 --> 00:20:59.973
Tim Link: Patricia, we've been talking about the ins and outs of the industry, no jobs are too small, networking, these types of things.

00:21:00.293 --> 00:21:04.933
Tim Link: When everybody kept hounding you to do the book, you finally decided it was time and you took all the notes.

00:21:05.133 --> 00:21:08.873
Tim Link: How did you go about deciding, okay, what really needs to go in here?

00:21:09.273 --> 00:21:10.853
Tim Link: How do I make it concise?

00:21:10.873 --> 00:21:11.853
Tim Link: How do I make it interesting?

00:21:11.973 --> 00:21:21.753
Tim Link: You do a fantastic job in here in the fact that they're, to the point, direct, helpful chapters without putting it in your face, but here's some things you can take under your belt.

00:21:22.133 --> 00:21:26.593
Tim Link: And then at the end, you put down the terminology, some of the things you're going to run into.

00:21:26.613 --> 00:21:32.353
Tim Link: Because originally, Mark was in the music industry, I did some early on stuff and realized I wasn't as talented as I should be.

00:21:32.773 --> 00:21:45.153
Tim Link: But I didn't know what a director was compared to a producer, compared to, you know, when do I need an agent, compared to when do I need a manager, when do I need a publicist, all these type of things.

00:21:45.593 --> 00:21:47.653
Tim Link: And so you do a great job with it in the book.

00:21:48.133 --> 00:21:55.553
Tim Link: How did you go about putting all these notes and all these things that you've had from all your experiences down into these very succinct chapters?

00:21:56.293 --> 00:21:57.553
Patricia Kara: It took a long time.

00:21:57.573 --> 00:22:11.013
Patricia Kara: We're talking over years, where I knew from somebody had planted the seed in 2000, like 25 years ago, but by 2008, I actually came up with the title of the book.

00:22:11.033 --> 00:22:12.833
Patricia Kara: It's the acronym of Deal or No Deal.

00:22:13.033 --> 00:22:17.753
Patricia Kara: And I was on set and I'm like, how can I incorporate the book and the title?

00:22:17.753 --> 00:22:34.933
Patricia Kara: And, you know, I thought my book was going to be out a lot quicker, but I realized writing is so hard, especially if you are not a writer and I don't, I really, it took a lot for me to find the discipline to really hone in on it.

00:22:34.953 --> 00:22:37.573
Patricia Kara: Like I really had to structure that time in.

00:22:38.453 --> 00:22:43.033
Patricia Kara: But I jotted notes over time and I kept thinking about that 15 year old girl.

00:22:43.053 --> 00:22:49.913
Patricia Kara: And what was it like really going back to basics and then following my career in my head along the way.

00:22:49.953 --> 00:22:51.393
Patricia Kara: And what is it I learned?

00:22:51.413 --> 00:22:53.733
Patricia Kara: What is it that the questions I had?

00:22:54.193 --> 00:22:57.693
Patricia Kara: And so I kept writing notes, kept writing notes, and it was all over the place.

00:22:57.713 --> 00:23:03.933
Patricia Kara: But eventually I started figuring out the outline and really matching up like this chapter should be this.

00:23:03.973 --> 00:23:06.433
Patricia Kara: And it didn't stay that way the whole time.

00:23:06.473 --> 00:23:07.873
Patricia Kara: I had to rework it.

00:23:07.893 --> 00:23:09.333
Patricia Kara: I had to rewrite things.

00:23:09.813 --> 00:23:19.373
Patricia Kara: So it was a continuous thing up until the last few years, literally the end of 2022, I finished writing the book, but realized you're not really done.

00:23:19.393 --> 00:23:20.813
Patricia Kara: And there's still more work to do.

00:23:20.993 --> 00:23:23.633
Patricia Kara: So there was more tweaking, more drafts, more...

00:23:23.653 --> 00:23:26.633
Patricia Kara: And I was caring for my mom at the time.

00:23:26.653 --> 00:23:33.673
Patricia Kara: And I think that is what really gave me strength to move forward even more while I was with her and sitting with her.

00:23:33.813 --> 00:23:37.833
Patricia Kara: I started thinking about just everything, life in general, time with her.

00:23:37.853 --> 00:23:42.033
Patricia Kara: And it really was the thing I needed to get me to go enough.

00:23:42.253 --> 00:23:45.053
Patricia Kara: It's time, it's time to get this book out there.

00:23:45.073 --> 00:23:49.713
Patricia Kara: And then that's where I ended up finding somebody to help me structure it because I'm not that good.

00:23:49.733 --> 00:23:53.893
Patricia Kara: Like I had my outline, I had my chapters, but then how do you structure it?

00:23:55.373 --> 00:24:02.453
Patricia Kara: So you find people, if you don't know how to do it, you find people to help you, to teach you, to learn those things.

00:24:02.453 --> 00:24:04.593
Patricia Kara: And so now I'm ready for my second book.

00:24:04.973 --> 00:24:05.533
Tim Link: And third.

00:24:05.973 --> 00:24:06.413
Tim Link: I love it.

00:24:06.533 --> 00:24:07.013
Tim Link: I love it.

00:24:07.153 --> 00:24:08.313
Patricia Kara: I'm already thinking about it.

00:24:09.033 --> 00:24:09.393
Tim Link: All right.

00:24:09.413 --> 00:24:10.673
Tim Link: Well, put me down for those dates.

00:24:10.693 --> 00:24:12.413
Tim Link: We'll have you back on the show for sure.

00:24:12.573 --> 00:24:13.693
Tim Link: We'll definitely do that.

00:24:14.113 --> 00:24:24.233
Tim Link: And I love the fact that, you know, you reached out to someone for help in a field, in an area that you weren't totally sure of and have never experienced before, just like you're doing in the book.

00:24:24.453 --> 00:24:28.533
Tim Link: Now they can reach out, they can read your knowledge, what you've gone through and how.

00:24:28.833 --> 00:24:35.993
Tim Link: And one of the things I was thinking was, I imagine in the grand scheme of things, things haven't changed that much in 30 years.

00:24:36.233 --> 00:24:42.533
Tim Link: Now what I mean by that, I mean that in a humorous way, because we know, yeah, yellow pages to the internet, to AI, to whatever.

00:24:42.553 --> 00:24:50.953
Tim Link: But no, but how you go about doing it, the sort of the basics, getting down to the bare basics of getting started, where do you go, who do you see?

00:24:50.993 --> 00:24:53.693
Tim Link: All that framework, I would imagine, is pretty much the same.

00:24:54.073 --> 00:25:02.213
Patricia Kara: So I love that you said that because I'm actually going back, as I wrote this and finished it, I moved in the middle of this and I'm in a different state.

00:25:02.353 --> 00:25:07.933
Patricia Kara: So all of a sudden, I find myself going back to basics and going, okay, I don't know anybody here.

00:25:07.933 --> 00:25:09.513
Patricia Kara: I don't know the agencies.

00:25:09.713 --> 00:25:11.413
Patricia Kara: I don't know the casting directors.

00:25:11.753 --> 00:25:12.833
Patricia Kara: I don't know anybody.

00:25:12.853 --> 00:25:14.133
Patricia Kara: So I'm starting from scratch.

00:25:14.273 --> 00:25:17.333
Patricia Kara: Yeah, I have more experience under my belt, which helps, absolutely.

00:25:17.693 --> 00:25:31.173
Patricia Kara: But I find myself going through the steps in my book because I have to figure it out and network and do new photoshoots, do different auditions, the self-tapes too, find the agents.

00:25:31.413 --> 00:25:40.333
Patricia Kara: So I find myself, which I'm excited about now because I'm like, okay, it's starting new, it's starting fresh, but all those things apply right now.

00:25:40.333 --> 00:25:42.933
Patricia Kara: So it's a pretty cool experience actually.

00:25:42.953 --> 00:25:46.813
Patricia Kara: So it's the unknown and I can't wait to see how it goes, where it goes.

00:25:46.833 --> 00:25:50.713
Patricia Kara: And there's going to be a lot of rejection in between, but I'm ready for it.

00:25:50.733 --> 00:25:53.973
Patricia Kara: I'm like, okay, for you're going to be a no, but there's going to be a yes eventually.

00:25:54.273 --> 00:25:54.893
Tim Link: That's it.

00:25:54.913 --> 00:25:55.473
Tim Link: That's it.

00:25:55.653 --> 00:25:56.373
Patricia Kara: That's it.

00:25:56.873 --> 00:25:58.933
Tim Link: Oh, man, I'm going back to my sales days.

00:25:58.953 --> 00:26:02.573
Tim Link: If for every 10 calls, you get four appointments and every four points, you close one deal.

00:26:02.593 --> 00:26:06.053
Tim Link: So it's really good to close two deals.

00:26:06.073 --> 00:26:06.973
Tim Link: So it works out well.

00:26:06.993 --> 00:26:08.333
Tim Link: So I think that's the same as well.

00:26:08.493 --> 00:26:09.653
Patricia Kara: I love that you understand.

00:26:09.893 --> 00:26:11.073
Tim Link: Yeah, absolutely.

00:26:11.093 --> 00:26:13.333
Tim Link: You're just getting closer to the yes.

00:26:13.493 --> 00:26:15.293
Tim Link: That's the key.

00:26:15.313 --> 00:26:16.853
Tim Link: Be persistent, but not pesty.

00:26:16.913 --> 00:26:19.513
Tim Link: That's what I try to tell my wife.

00:26:19.533 --> 00:26:19.953
Tim Link: I don't know.

00:26:22.753 --> 00:26:32.213
Tim Link: What you talked about, one thing that popped up again is early on, you talked about moving, going from Chicago to going to New York, going to LA, these types of things.

00:26:32.433 --> 00:26:41.413
Tim Link: How important is that nowadays to go to the heart of where we think the entertainment industry is or is it more vast?

00:26:41.433 --> 00:26:48.173
Tim Link: Because I know I'm in Atlanta area, Atlanta is a hotbed, I've appeared as a parent in a few movies.

00:26:48.373 --> 00:26:50.753
Tim Link: That's when you know you're getting old when you're the parent or the grandparent.

00:26:54.533 --> 00:26:54.873
Patricia Kara: I'm there.

00:26:54.893 --> 00:26:55.133
Patricia Kara: Yeah.

00:26:55.153 --> 00:26:57.453
Tim Link: So these say that, but you've got Atlanta, it's coming up.

00:26:57.473 --> 00:27:00.813
Tim Link: They do a lot of stuff in Vancouver, of course, LA, New York.

00:27:01.153 --> 00:27:02.153
Tim Link: It's all over the place.

00:27:02.153 --> 00:27:17.493
Tim Link: How important is it to get to what we call the heart or the mecca of what we think the industry is compared to being flexible enough that maybe you're doing some stuff on a more regional basis or based somewhere you really want to live compared and then going to wherever you need to do the jobs?

00:27:17.513 --> 00:27:22.593
Patricia Kara: I think it's great to start where you're at, but things have changed so much at this point.

00:27:22.593 --> 00:27:24.233
Patricia Kara: Now everybody's doing the self tapes.

00:27:24.413 --> 00:27:27.533
Patricia Kara: It's easier for you to do a self tape, submit it.

00:27:27.753 --> 00:27:33.453
Patricia Kara: And if you get the job, you can flag it to wherever they're doing the shoot for the film, the TV show, the modeling job.

00:27:33.873 --> 00:27:39.093
Patricia Kara: So now I think people are in a better place of having access to a lot more.

00:27:39.433 --> 00:27:47.573
Patricia Kara: And again, you could live in those main hubs, but there are smaller markets that you can just travel to those bigger markets.

00:27:47.593 --> 00:27:48.933
Patricia Kara: It's so much easier now.

00:27:49.253 --> 00:27:50.653
Patricia Kara: So many more opportunities.

00:27:51.013 --> 00:27:55.993
Patricia Kara: I was in LA, booked a job that was in Florida the week I was moving.

00:27:56.013 --> 00:28:00.253
Patricia Kara: And I was like, how random that I have to go shoot where I'm moving to.

00:28:00.273 --> 00:28:02.213
Patricia Kara: So it's just interesting how it works.

00:28:02.233 --> 00:28:02.893
Patricia Kara: It's changed.

00:28:02.913 --> 00:28:06.953
Patricia Kara: And luckily, now we can create our own studios within our homes, right?

00:28:07.333 --> 00:28:07.873
Tim Link: That's it.

00:28:08.013 --> 00:28:09.253
Tim Link: That's it for sure.

00:28:09.273 --> 00:28:13.233
Tim Link: We talked about agents and managers and these type of things.

00:28:13.393 --> 00:28:15.473
Tim Link: At what point do you start looking for that?

00:28:15.733 --> 00:28:18.733
Tim Link: Or what point do you start fending them off at the door?

00:28:18.753 --> 00:28:21.593
Tim Link: Because everybody wants to be your manager or agent when you're hot.

00:28:22.153 --> 00:28:27.973
Tim Link: At what point, if you're new to all this, do you need to be considering that compared to how much you can do on your own?

00:28:29.373 --> 00:28:33.833
Patricia Kara: For me, personally, I always went the agent route in the beginning.

00:28:33.853 --> 00:28:39.193
Patricia Kara: Like for me, having an agent and I started asking the questions along the way, like when do I get a manager?

00:28:39.453 --> 00:28:40.093
Patricia Kara: And it's different.

00:28:40.113 --> 00:28:46.013
Patricia Kara: I have friends who got a manager first before an agent, and they looked for a manager to help them find an agent.

00:28:46.333 --> 00:28:51.373
Patricia Kara: I think in LA, more people have managers and agents, but I think it's a personal thing.

00:28:51.393 --> 00:28:58.453
Patricia Kara: You have to really look at where you're at, because in between the last 35 years, did I have a manager?

00:28:58.473 --> 00:28:59.573
Patricia Kara: At some point, I did.

00:28:59.593 --> 00:29:00.693
Patricia Kara: For a few years, I did.

00:29:00.953 --> 00:29:03.113
Patricia Kara: And realized, why do I have a manager?

00:29:03.233 --> 00:29:08.893
Patricia Kara: I think I can do this on my own, and I have somebody who does my contracts.

00:29:08.913 --> 00:29:10.113
Patricia Kara: I have agents as well.

00:29:10.373 --> 00:29:13.093
Patricia Kara: And I have agents for each thing that I do.

00:29:13.373 --> 00:29:19.233
Patricia Kara: One for commercials, one for acting, one for each category, there's an agent.

00:29:19.573 --> 00:29:24.953
Patricia Kara: So for me, it felt like I don't want a manager, I don't need one at this point in time.

00:29:25.133 --> 00:29:25.973
Patricia Kara: That may change.

00:29:25.993 --> 00:29:28.753
Patricia Kara: I mean, as you go, you have to figure that out.

00:29:28.973 --> 00:29:53.333
Patricia Kara: But I think if you find yourself a good agent and have a good relationship with your agent where you're communicating and you're on the same page that they're working for you and you're communicating what your needs and wants or what you're trying to figure out your career and you have those conversations, then you could go without a manager to, as long as you want, it's up to you and just gauge where your career is at that point.

00:29:53.853 --> 00:29:54.153
Tim Link: Right.

00:29:54.273 --> 00:29:54.913
Tim Link: Good advice.

00:29:54.933 --> 00:29:55.453
Tim Link: Good advice.

00:29:55.573 --> 00:30:03.313
Tim Link: Because I know you from the agent front, when we're talking about literary, I've had literary agents, and one I have found some are very, very in tune.

00:30:03.353 --> 00:30:04.253
Tim Link: You're very tight knit.

00:30:04.273 --> 00:30:05.073
Tim Link: You've got a goal.

00:30:05.093 --> 00:30:06.333
Tim Link: Here's what we're trying to accomplish.

00:30:06.353 --> 00:30:07.833
Tim Link: Here's what we're going to pitch, so on and so forth.

00:30:08.113 --> 00:30:11.833
Tim Link: And others are more like, well, give me the stuff and I'll go out and see if I can sell it for you.

00:30:12.133 --> 00:30:13.353
Tim Link: And then don't call me.

00:30:13.533 --> 00:30:15.853
Tim Link: I had an agent after a while.

00:30:15.873 --> 00:30:16.813
Tim Link: It's like, yeah.

00:30:16.833 --> 00:30:17.853
Tim Link: And that's so frustrating.

00:30:17.873 --> 00:30:19.633
Tim Link: It's like, wait a minute, you're supposed to be working for me.

00:30:19.913 --> 00:30:25.013
Tim Link: And you're not, because unless you sell something on my behalf, you're not really that interested.

00:30:25.493 --> 00:30:27.173
Tim Link: And so I imagine it's hard to find...

00:30:27.193 --> 00:30:29.613
Tim Link: I would imagine early on, you're excited about having an agent.

00:30:30.613 --> 00:30:31.673
Tim Link: Absolutely, yeah.

00:30:31.793 --> 00:30:33.713
Tim Link: So am I paying me in advance to write my book?

00:30:33.733 --> 00:30:34.813
Tim Link: I, you know, whoa.

00:30:34.833 --> 00:30:37.453
Tim Link: And then after a while, you're like, why am I paying this person 15%?

00:30:37.473 --> 00:30:39.673
Tim Link: I don't, wait a minute, what's going on here?

00:30:39.693 --> 00:30:40.353
Tim Link: Whatever it may be.

00:30:40.913 --> 00:30:44.993
Tim Link: So how do you sort of, how do you decipher through what that fit is?

00:30:44.993 --> 00:30:53.253
Tim Link: What that, if you feel that you need an agent and or they're knocking on your door, how do you sort of determine, is it an instinct, a gut feeling?

00:30:53.273 --> 00:30:55.693
Tim Link: Do you pick their brain about how knowledgeable they are?

00:30:55.973 --> 00:30:57.813
Tim Link: How do you go about sort of positioning yourself?

00:30:57.833 --> 00:31:02.413
Patricia Kara: All the above, actually, all the above is you have to gauge it and look at it.

00:31:02.413 --> 00:31:08.573
Patricia Kara: And sometimes it, like I've had agents where they were so good and they were so great and we worked for years together.

00:31:08.893 --> 00:31:12.293
Patricia Kara: And then all of a sudden it started shifting and it wasn't quite the same.

00:31:12.813 --> 00:31:17.573
Patricia Kara: And I had the conversation with the agent and I talk about one of these experiences in the book.

00:31:18.253 --> 00:31:24.833
Patricia Kara: And they were like, you don't have a niche, you don't have, you know, this or that, you're older now.

00:31:24.833 --> 00:31:26.713
Patricia Kara: It gave me all the excuses.

00:31:27.053 --> 00:31:30.553
Patricia Kara: And I was like, OK, at that point, I wasn't done yet.

00:31:30.553 --> 00:31:32.493
Patricia Kara: I'm like, I'm not, you know, hanging it up.

00:31:32.513 --> 00:31:35.253
Patricia Kara: I'm still in this and I'm ready to keep going.

00:31:35.273 --> 00:31:36.293
Patricia Kara: What is he talking about?

00:31:36.433 --> 00:31:45.193
Patricia Kara: So I made the decision after all these years to part ways with him and wished him well, and he did go on and he did really well.

00:31:45.653 --> 00:31:50.873
Patricia Kara: I went with another agent within that week, found another agent that ended up booking me on three different hosting jobs.

00:31:51.353 --> 00:31:54.953
Patricia Kara: And here's this other agent telling me, you know, you're pretty much washed up.

00:31:55.353 --> 00:31:56.733
Patricia Kara: And then you find this other agent.

00:31:56.913 --> 00:31:59.573
Patricia Kara: So sometimes I think people get comfortable.

00:32:00.293 --> 00:32:11.453
Patricia Kara: And when you start feeling those things where you're like, oh, it's not moving, it's not going, definitely gauge it because sometimes we're also obviously wanting more always immediately.

00:32:11.893 --> 00:32:14.553
Patricia Kara: But I think you just need to gauge it, trust your instincts.

00:32:14.573 --> 00:32:24.613
Patricia Kara: And if you feel like you've done everything where you're trying to have these conversations with your agent and it's still not shifting, you know, you get that gut feeling.

00:32:24.633 --> 00:32:26.813
Patricia Kara: And you have to start looking elsewhere.

00:32:26.833 --> 00:32:29.513
Patricia Kara: And it's OK to feel that that's going to happen a lot.

00:32:29.613 --> 00:32:33.773
Patricia Kara: It's it's it's a roller coaster ride and you're going to have your highs, your lows, your ups, your downs.

00:32:34.513 --> 00:32:36.733
Patricia Kara: It's just a matter of do you want to keep going?

00:32:36.873 --> 00:32:37.253
Patricia Kara: Great.

00:32:37.293 --> 00:32:39.033
Patricia Kara: OK, we'll figure out how to keep going.

00:32:39.313 --> 00:32:42.273
Patricia Kara: At the end of the day, you're your own manager, your own agent.

00:32:42.493 --> 00:32:48.473
Patricia Kara: So as much as you have a team around you, you still are the one in charge of your career.

00:32:48.493 --> 00:32:52.733
Patricia Kara: So you need to figure out what's right for you and go from there.

00:32:53.013 --> 00:32:54.353
Tim Link: Great, great advice.

00:32:54.873 --> 00:32:55.153
Tim Link: Love it.

00:32:56.433 --> 00:33:01.473
Tim Link: So last tidbit I'll give you here is, you know, obviously a huge fan of yours, huge fan of the book.

00:33:01.693 --> 00:33:02.853
Tim Link: I love everything about it.

00:33:02.873 --> 00:33:03.413
Tim Link: Dream On...

00:33:03.413 --> 00:33:03.993
Tim Link: Now Deliver.

00:33:04.153 --> 00:33:06.313
Tim Link: So it's a great, great insight.

00:33:06.493 --> 00:33:08.493
Tim Link: What was your goal at the end of the day?

00:33:08.513 --> 00:33:09.633
Tim Link: Did you have a goal or takeaway?

00:33:09.653 --> 00:33:18.773
Tim Link: So when everybody picks up a copy of the book and they read through it and love it and they earmark it and they mark it up and they buy a second copy, so they can put it on the shelf, the third copy so they have it.

00:33:18.793 --> 00:33:21.693
Tim Link: So when they see you in person, you can sign it.

00:33:21.713 --> 00:33:25.793
Tim Link: Was there a goal or thing you're hoping that people walk away from after reading the book?

00:33:26.133 --> 00:33:27.713
Patricia Kara: The goal is for them to succeed.

00:33:27.813 --> 00:33:30.693
Patricia Kara: I love getting feedback from people on the...

00:33:30.933 --> 00:33:34.153
Patricia Kara: I mean, first, I had it, you know, my friends and family, I'm like, OK, read it.

00:33:34.173 --> 00:33:34.713
Patricia Kara: What do you think?

00:33:34.733 --> 00:33:37.553
Patricia Kara: Like, oh, my God, you know, do I hit the mark for people?

00:33:37.573 --> 00:33:39.213
Patricia Kara: Like, are they going to understand what I'm talking about?

00:33:39.533 --> 00:33:46.133
Patricia Kara: Which that's why the glossary is so important, because if you're new into this, you don't know what's what.

00:33:46.153 --> 00:33:50.293
Patricia Kara: And that's why when you're on set, you have to pay attention and really ask all the questions.

00:33:50.313 --> 00:33:54.373
Patricia Kara: If you don't know something, ask those questions, find out, learn, figure it out.

00:33:54.573 --> 00:34:02.313
Patricia Kara: But the goal is for people to get that help, because once I started having people reach out to me and tell me where they're at with I love hearing those stories.

00:34:02.573 --> 00:34:08.753
Patricia Kara: It makes me happy to know that they're getting that inspiration to take the next steps, because it is scary.

00:34:09.093 --> 00:34:10.573
Patricia Kara: It is scary, the unknown.

00:34:10.873 --> 00:34:16.613
Patricia Kara: And there are people that have told me, oh, I'm in it, but I'm not sure, you know, whether I continue to pursue this.

00:34:16.993 --> 00:34:28.853
Patricia Kara: So again, I love knowing that they're trying and they're figuring it out and that they're just excited to get to the next steps and hopefully flourish and, you know, reach new heights.

00:34:28.973 --> 00:34:30.233
Patricia Kara: That excites me to no end.

00:34:30.473 --> 00:34:31.513
Tim Link: Well, that is fantastic.

00:34:31.533 --> 00:34:32.633
Tim Link: And the book will definitely do that.

00:34:32.673 --> 00:34:36.693
Tim Link: So where can people find out about you, Vince, things going on?

00:34:36.713 --> 00:34:37.713
Tim Link: What has the best way to follow you?

00:34:38.673 --> 00:34:41.233
Patricia Kara: On my website, patriciacara.com.

00:34:41.273 --> 00:34:42.793
Patricia Kara: And that's K-A-R-A.

00:34:42.873 --> 00:34:44.333
Patricia Kara: And I'm also on social media.

00:34:44.353 --> 00:34:46.173
Patricia Kara: Everything is under Patricia Kara.

00:34:46.633 --> 00:34:51.213
Patricia Kara: So Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, which is X now, but all the above.

00:34:52.953 --> 00:34:53.593
Tim Link: Definitely.

00:34:53.613 --> 00:34:57.873
Tim Link: Well, everybody will post all those and make sure everybody knows to follow you on all those wonderful sites.

00:34:58.233 --> 00:34:59.533
Tim Link: Everybody pick up a copy of the book.

00:34:59.553 --> 00:35:07.553
Tim Link: The thing I love about the book, among many, many, many, many things, is not only is it, I think, applicable for the entertainment industry, it's applicable for life.

00:35:07.973 --> 00:35:11.913
Tim Link: You know, yes, the terminologies are different and things, but you've got to have a support system.

00:35:11.933 --> 00:35:12.793
Tim Link: You've got a network.

00:35:12.813 --> 00:35:13.813
Tim Link: You've got to meet people.

00:35:14.173 --> 00:35:15.733
Tim Link: You've got to be your own cheerleader.

00:35:15.753 --> 00:35:17.613
Tim Link: We also have cheerleaders around you.

00:35:17.893 --> 00:35:19.473
Tim Link: So it's a great book for that as well.

00:35:19.973 --> 00:35:21.813
Tim Link: So, you know, I want everybody to pick up a copy of the book.

00:35:21.893 --> 00:35:22.843
Tim Link: It's Dream On...

00:35:22.843 --> 00:35:28.553
Tim Link: Now Deliver, The No-Nonsense Guide to Achieving Success in the Entertainment Industry by Patricia Kara.

00:35:28.913 --> 00:35:32.013
Tim Link: Patricia, thank you so, so much for coming on the show.

00:35:32.033 --> 00:35:34.213
Tim Link: I can't wait for the second or third book.

00:35:34.333 --> 00:35:37.913
Tim Link: And we'll have to have extended interviews because we both love to talk.

00:35:37.933 --> 00:35:38.853
Tim Link: And I love that too.

00:35:40.133 --> 00:35:40.553
Patricia Kara: I love it.

00:35:40.573 --> 00:35:46.293
Patricia Kara: And I love what you said about the book that you can apply this to other things in your life, whether it's personal or professional.

00:35:46.853 --> 00:35:48.373
Patricia Kara: I had that in mind.

00:35:48.413 --> 00:35:50.973
Patricia Kara: And so I love that you just said that.

00:35:51.073 --> 00:35:53.093
Patricia Kara: That's the biggest compliment for me.

00:35:53.253 --> 00:35:55.553
Patricia Kara: And so I really appreciate you saying that.

00:35:55.773 --> 00:36:00.553
Patricia Kara: I appreciate your time and giving a shout out to the book and having this conversation with you.

00:36:00.573 --> 00:36:01.393
Patricia Kara: I feel like I know you.

00:36:01.653 --> 00:36:02.693
Patricia Kara: We can go on and on.

00:36:02.713 --> 00:36:03.513
Tim Link: There you go.

00:36:03.533 --> 00:36:04.113
Tim Link: I love it.

00:36:04.133 --> 00:36:04.613
Tim Link: I love it.

00:36:04.753 --> 00:36:06.353
Tim Link: Well, well deserved.

00:36:06.353 --> 00:36:07.353
Tim Link: Great job on it.

00:36:07.373 --> 00:36:12.173
Tim Link: I look forward to chatting with you again somewhere down the road, meeting up in person somewhere down the road.

00:36:12.433 --> 00:36:15.873
Tim Link: But definitely everybody pick up a copy of Dream On and Now Deliver by Patricia Kara.

00:36:16.313 --> 00:36:17.773
