Joining me for this episode is master illustrator Grace Helmer. We have a chat about her latest illustrated children’s book, Van Gogh’s Dog. A fun story of a scrappy street dog named Sunny, who unexpectedly inspires Vincent van Gogh to create some of his greatest masterpieces. We chat about Grace’s beautiful illustrations in the book, drawing from Van Gogh’s art and creating beautiful oil on canvas that is shown throughout the book. Grace Helmer is an illustrator based in Brighton, UK. She is known for her vibrant and expressive painterly style, often created with bold, layered brushstrokes and warm, inviting colours. Her work captures scenes that feel both familiar and dreamlike, ranging from tranquil landscapes to intimate interiors. Often inspired by nature, travel, and everyday life, Helmer’s illustrations explore the beauty in simplicity and evoke a sense of wonder in the mundane.
Most of her illustrations are oil painted.
