Dr. Rena Carlson is a graduate of Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
Her experience began with family farming. She co-owned Alpine Animal Hospital, a mixed-animal practice, for 25 years. She and her partner grew the practice from two to six doctors, and designed and built a new facility in 2009.

Dr. Carlson works for National Veterinary Associates as a general practice mentor for new graduates serving in Idaho, Montana, Colorado, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska.

Dr. Carlson and her husband raised two sons who kept them very busy. She spent many hours volunteering at school, driving for field trips, and supporting soccer, lacrosse, cross country, and track teams. When not working, she enjoys time with family, working on the farm with the family cow calf operation, her two cats Rocket and Missy, and tending to the family’s laying hens.

00:01:34.700 --> 00:01:35.480
Arden Moore: Welcome, Dr.

00:01:35.500 --> 00:01:35.760
Arden Moore: Rena.

00:01:36.320 --> 00:01:36.980
Dr. Rena Carlson: Oh, thank you.

00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:37.880
Dr. Rena Carlson: You're too kind.

00:01:38.340 --> 00:01:41.400
Dr. Rena Carlson: I'm a veterinarian who wants to help people.

00:01:41.420 --> 00:01:42.720
Arden Moore: Hey, what are we going to do?

00:01:42.740 --> 00:01:43.660
Arden Moore: What are we going to do?

00:01:43.820 --> 00:01:47.000
Arden Moore: We're going to find out the answers, but we got to take this quick break.

00:01:47.020 --> 00:01:48.080
Arden Moore: And you all know the drill.

00:01:48.200 --> 00:01:50.360
Arden Moore: We got to sit, stay.

00:01:50.620 --> 00:01:51.380
Arden Moore: We'll be right back.

00:01:53.760 --> 00:01:55.020
Announcer: Time for a pause.

00:01:55.600 --> 00:01:58.720
Announcer: For furry ones, actually, sit and stay.

00:01:59.020 --> 00:02:00.640
Announcer: Oh Behave will be right back.

00:02:04.260 --> 00:02:05.440
Arden Moore: Pause up, Pet Pals.

00:02:05.500 --> 00:02:08.080
Arden Moore: Arden Moore here, your host of the Oh Behave show.

00:02:08.200 --> 00:02:08.600
Arden Moore: Me?

00:02:08.820 --> 00:02:09.380
Arden Moore: Wow.

00:02:09.420 --> 00:02:15.720
Arden Moore: Did you know there's up to 100 million free roaming cats in the United States?

00:02:15.880 --> 00:02:20.340
Arden Moore: And without spay or neuter, that number is only going to keep growing.

00:02:20.640 --> 00:02:27.500
Arden Moore: Not only does spay neuter humanely reduce the community cat population, it keeps cats healthy.

00:02:27.780 --> 00:02:34.600
Arden Moore: Scooter, the neuter cat, is on a mission to give cats an extra life by making it hip to be snipped.

00:02:34.760 --> 00:02:35.800
Arden Moore: Hey, check them out.

00:02:35.880 --> 00:02:37.880
Arden Moore: Go to givethemten.org.

00:02:39.320 --> 00:02:46.460
Arden Moore: That's givethemten.org and help us make this a better world for cats.

00:02:48.680 --> 00:03:00.380
Announcer: Let's Talk Pets on petliferadio.com Oh Behave is back with more tail wagging ways to achieve harmony of a household with your pets.

00:03:00.520 --> 00:03:05.140
Announcer: Now back to your fetching host, America's Pet Edutainer, Arden Moore.

00:03:05.800 --> 00:03:08.680
Arden Moore: Welcome back to the Oh Behave Show on Pet Life Radio.

00:03:08.840 --> 00:03:10.500
Arden Moore: I'm your host, Arden Moore.

00:03:10.980 --> 00:03:13.480
Arden Moore: We have the president on the show.

00:03:13.760 --> 00:03:18.820
Arden Moore: The president, the best kind of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

00:03:18.820 --> 00:03:19.880
Arden Moore: I'm talking Dr.

00:03:19.980 --> 00:03:21.480
Arden Moore: Rena Carlson.

00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:26.120
Arden Moore: And you're on a mission this month because of Mother Nature, right?

00:03:26.760 --> 00:03:27.540
Dr. Rena Carlson: We are.

00:03:27.800 --> 00:03:42.900
Dr. Rena Carlson: And you know, our top priority for the AVMA is to do everything we can and get all kinds of information out so that everybody can keep their pets safe during some of these times that can be stressful and worrisome.

00:03:43.540 --> 00:03:47.180
Dr. Rena Carlson: So being prepared is the number one thing.

00:03:47.180 --> 00:03:48.240
Dr. Rena Carlson: So this is awesome.

00:03:48.260 --> 00:03:51.080
Dr. Rena Carlson: And I appreciate some time to be able to talk about what we can do.

00:03:51.440 --> 00:04:01.320
Arden Moore: Well, I need to share that on May 28th here in Dallas, we had a tornado and we live in a subdivision called Little Forest Hills trees.

00:04:02.080 --> 00:04:15.400
Arden Moore: And three of my neighbors, 80 year old plus trees uprooted and went into our backyard, landed on this backyard office, ruined our heavy metal patio.

00:04:15.520 --> 00:04:20.340
Arden Moore: We have a thing for our grills, a big gazebo gone, power out for five days.

00:04:20.740 --> 00:04:25.400
Arden Moore: But we had our six pets in our walk in closet.

00:04:26.040 --> 00:04:30.220
Arden Moore: It was kind of scary, but we had things in preparation.

00:04:30.620 --> 00:04:34.480
Arden Moore: And you said the key word, be prepared, because I don't know, what about you?

00:04:34.920 --> 00:04:41.140
Arden Moore: I don't think there's any place safe on the planet where the climate is going to always be perfect anymore these days.

00:04:41.700 --> 00:04:43.120
Dr. Rena Carlson: You know, and it's not just climate.

00:04:43.400 --> 00:04:45.220
Dr. Rena Carlson: I come from an area where we have earthquakes.

00:04:45.420 --> 00:05:00.960
Dr. Rena Carlson: So again, weather is huge because, of course, with storms and flooding and tornadoes, wintertime with cold, you know, there can be all kinds of extremes, but we do have, you know, again, earthquakes, fire.

00:05:00.980 --> 00:05:02.440
Arden Moore: I used to live in California.

00:05:02.460 --> 00:05:05.440
Arden Moore: I got the push and the shove and the wobble.

00:05:05.980 --> 00:05:10.400
Dr. Rena Carlson: It doesn't matter what the potential emergency is.

00:05:10.640 --> 00:05:21.100
Dr. Rena Carlson: It could be even something like in my area, I've lost power for, you know, many hours due to a car crashing into a big, you know, a big power station.

00:05:21.300 --> 00:05:25.760
Dr. Rena Carlson: So, you know, there's just many reasons why we need to be prepared.

00:05:26.100 --> 00:05:33.620
Arden Moore: So speaking of being prepared for yourself, what kind of pets do you have and what do you do when you think something's bad is going to happen?

00:05:33.640 --> 00:05:36.060
Arden Moore: How do you prepare it for your own home and your pets?

00:05:36.840 --> 00:05:42.880
Dr. Rena Carlson: So obviously, you know, you kind of need to sit down when things are calm and make a checklist.

00:05:42.960 --> 00:05:45.760
Dr. Rena Carlson: And there's all kinds of online assistance.

00:05:45.780 --> 00:05:47.680
Dr. Rena Carlson: So avma.org is a great one.

00:05:47.700 --> 00:05:58.260
Dr. Rena Carlson: We have a whole section on disaster preparedness to make sure you think of all of the things because off the top of my head, honestly, I'm probably not going to think of every little detail right now.

00:05:58.620 --> 00:06:02.700
Dr. Rena Carlson: So go to those checklists and think about what do we need every day?

00:06:02.780 --> 00:06:03.800
Dr. Rena Carlson: Not what we want.

00:06:04.060 --> 00:06:05.680
Dr. Rena Carlson: What do we absolutely need?

00:06:05.800 --> 00:06:06.760
Arden Moore: Who are your pets?

00:06:06.780 --> 00:06:07.660
Arden Moore: What are the names?

00:06:07.800 --> 00:06:10.400
Dr. Rena Carlson: So I have Rocket and Missy, my two cats.

00:06:10.420 --> 00:06:14.120
Dr. Rena Carlson: I told you Tabby's are absolutely just melt my heart.

00:06:14.140 --> 00:06:17.580
Dr. Rena Carlson: So I have a Tabby named Rocket and Calico.

00:06:18.300 --> 00:06:20.480
Dr. Rena Carlson: We travel a lot, so I don't have a dog right now.

00:06:20.500 --> 00:06:23.580
Dr. Rena Carlson: So I'm kind of missing the companionship of a dog.

00:06:23.840 --> 00:06:25.200
Dr. Rena Carlson: But we also have chickens.

00:06:25.200 --> 00:06:31.260
Dr. Rena Carlson: So even if you have livestock, think about what does that look like?

00:06:31.820 --> 00:06:33.560
Dr. Rena Carlson: And could I move them?

00:06:33.680 --> 00:06:36.200
Dr. Rena Carlson: You know, what possible disaster?

00:06:36.220 --> 00:06:39.960
Dr. Rena Carlson: But really, again, back to what do we absolutely need every day?

00:06:39.980 --> 00:06:40.880
Dr. Rena Carlson: We need water.

00:06:40.920 --> 00:06:42.220
Dr. Rena Carlson: We need some food.

00:06:42.660 --> 00:06:47.320
Dr. Rena Carlson: We need some shelter and protection, whether that's from heat or cold.

00:06:47.340 --> 00:06:57.080
Dr. Rena Carlson: So put those checklists together and have a have a spot, you know, down in a pretty convenient place.

00:06:57.340 --> 00:07:00.280
Dr. Rena Carlson: So you're not digging in the storage room way downstairs.

00:07:00.480 --> 00:07:03.520
Arden Moore: Or it's in the drawer underneath all the takeout menus.

00:07:03.820 --> 00:07:04.480
Dr. Rena Carlson: Exactly.

00:07:04.500 --> 00:07:08.300
Dr. Rena Carlson: Keep it kind of in an easy closet as you're trying to run out the door.

00:07:08.840 --> 00:07:11.080
Dr. Rena Carlson: So that, again, emergencies happen fast.

00:07:11.080 --> 00:07:12.460
Dr. Rena Carlson: Sometimes you can be prepared.

00:07:12.700 --> 00:07:14.900
Dr. Rena Carlson: Sometimes you can say, oh, that storm is coming.

00:07:15.340 --> 00:07:17.680
Dr. Rena Carlson: I'm going to make sure I'm all set.

00:07:17.700 --> 00:07:20.220
Dr. Rena Carlson: But an earthquake, you don't have that time.

00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:22.420
Dr. Rena Carlson: So you want it to be really quick.

00:07:22.500 --> 00:07:23.560
Dr. Rena Carlson: And then think of your pets.

00:07:23.580 --> 00:07:25.920
Dr. Rena Carlson: You know, what kind of medications do they need?

00:07:26.140 --> 00:07:29.220
Dr. Rena Carlson: If I have to make sure you have a spare leash in there.

00:07:29.760 --> 00:07:36.940
Dr. Rena Carlson: You know, for kitties, they've got those easy, disposable, portable litter pan type things.

00:07:37.240 --> 00:07:38.740
Dr. Rena Carlson: You know, have some...

00:07:38.760 --> 00:07:39.900
Arden Moore: And a carrier, right?

00:07:39.920 --> 00:07:41.420
Dr. Rena Carlson: A carrier, exactly.

00:07:41.440 --> 00:07:44.360
Dr. Rena Carlson: So again, I'm not going to be able to, you know, off the top of my head.

00:07:44.980 --> 00:07:46.460
Arden Moore: And you said it before, too.

00:07:46.480 --> 00:07:54.640
Arden Moore: avma.org has a disaster preparation section, and they even have a checklist for an evacuation kit, everyone.

00:07:54.860 --> 00:07:55.360
Arden Moore: So that's...

00:07:55.380 --> 00:07:58.000
Arden Moore: Are you giving us homework, the good doctor?

00:07:58.960 --> 00:08:09.740
Dr. Rena Carlson: And do it again at a time when things are super calm, you have a very clear head, because once that emergency happens, you are no longer able to stop and really think about some of those details.

00:08:10.200 --> 00:08:12.640
Arden Moore: And I know you're not a meteorologist.

00:08:12.760 --> 00:08:14.320
Arden Moore: You don't play one on TV.

00:08:14.460 --> 00:08:15.520
Arden Moore: I don't play one on TV.

00:08:16.220 --> 00:08:33.240
Arden Moore: But it is predicted from the people that do know that we may have about 17 to 25 named storms and maybe up to a dozen plus hurricanes predicted for this hurricane season which started June 1st.

00:08:33.500 --> 00:08:37.520
Dr. Rena Carlson: And really when it comes to hurricane season, listen to the officials.

00:08:37.880 --> 00:08:40.300
Dr. Rena Carlson: If they say evacuate, get out.

00:08:40.520 --> 00:08:42.820
Dr. Rena Carlson: And you've got your kit prepared.

00:08:43.280 --> 00:08:46.300
Dr. Rena Carlson: And think ahead again when it comes to livestock.

00:08:46.500 --> 00:08:51.160
Dr. Rena Carlson: How can I get my animals out of this situation?

00:08:51.400 --> 00:09:00.140
Dr. Rena Carlson: And we don't have very many chickens, but we have a little coop and we can load them up in the pickup and get out if we needed to.

00:09:00.160 --> 00:09:01.700
Dr. Rena Carlson: I mean, if it was, you know...

00:09:01.800 --> 00:09:03.620
Arden Moore: Yeah, do they have names too?

00:09:04.160 --> 00:09:05.740
Dr. Rena Carlson: No, I do not have names.

00:09:06.260 --> 00:09:10.680
Dr. Rena Carlson: Early on, I had a couple that were quite friendly and I could, you know, hold them.

00:09:10.820 --> 00:09:14.800
Dr. Rena Carlson: As things got a little busier for me, you know, we've raised new chicks.

00:09:14.880 --> 00:09:17.600
Dr. Rena Carlson: I've not been as good making friends.

00:09:17.620 --> 00:09:19.240
Arden Moore: >What the cluck, doctor?

00:09:21.220 --> 00:09:22.040
Arden Moore: They give you eggs.

00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:28.420
Dr. Rena Carlson: They do give us eggs and they give us lots of entertainment, eat the bugs off the yard.

00:09:28.440 --> 00:09:29.220
Arden Moore: Nice, nice.

00:09:29.620 --> 00:09:31.420
Arden Moore: So we're speaking with Dr.

00:09:31.440 --> 00:09:32.280
Arden Moore: Rena Carlson.

00:09:32.300 --> 00:09:36.460
Arden Moore: She is the president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

00:09:36.740 --> 00:09:49.900
Arden Moore: One thing I really like is that you say they have to have IDs and collars can go away, but give us an idea of what you mean so that if something happens, you get separated from your pet during a storm or something.

00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:58.240
Dr. Rena Carlson: Yes, and I'm glad you are emphasizing that because a microchip is truly the best means of identification.

00:09:58.800 --> 00:10:04.920
Dr. Rena Carlson: And make sure that your information is always updated on the national website.

00:10:05.240 --> 00:10:11.120
Dr. Rena Carlson: Too many times I've had people say, well, I forgot to put my new phone number or...

00:10:11.140 --> 00:10:11.990
Dr. Rena Carlson: Really?...

00:10:11.990 --> 00:10:13.320
Dr. Rena Carlson: register it.

00:10:13.660 --> 00:10:15.740
Arden Moore: I think they should do puppy pushups for that.

00:10:17.060 --> 00:10:20.860
Dr. Rena Carlson: So don't forget to get all of your phone number.

00:10:20.920 --> 00:10:22.080
Dr. Rena Carlson: Have a backup phone number.

00:10:22.200 --> 00:10:22.920
Dr. Rena Carlson: Have a friend.

00:10:22.940 --> 00:10:30.100
Dr. Rena Carlson: Have your siblings or somebody that you can trust will have that backup for you.

00:10:30.380 --> 00:10:39.740
Dr. Rena Carlson: So that if you are not available, if your phone is not working, there is somebody somewhere that can say, yes, that belongs to so and so.

00:10:40.240 --> 00:10:44.300
Dr. Rena Carlson: What can I do to help make sure that pet is safe until we can return it?

00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:49.640
Dr. Rena Carlson: So make sure you have that updated information on the national registries.

00:10:50.080 --> 00:10:50.780
Arden Moore: I like that.

00:10:51.140 --> 00:10:51.980
Arden Moore: Hey, everybody.

00:10:52.220 --> 00:10:53.620
Arden Moore: We're speaking with Dr.

00:10:53.640 --> 00:10:54.520
Arden Moore: Rena Carlson.

00:10:54.540 --> 00:10:59.080
Arden Moore: She's the president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

00:10:59.260 --> 00:11:05.700
Arden Moore: We're going to dive into other things like, whew, summer heat and who the heck is Dr.

00:11:05.720 --> 00:11:08.280
Arden Moore: Carlson after we take this break.

00:11:08.300 --> 00:11:11.020
Arden Moore: So everybody just sit, stay.

00:11:11.260 --> 00:11:12.120
Arden Moore: We'll be right back.

00:11:15.540 --> 00:11:18.440
Announcer: Time for a walk on the red carpet, of course.

00:11:18.780 --> 00:11:22.740

<v SPEAKER_4>Hi, this is Steve Wozniak, and I would love to invite you to listen to the Oh Behave show by Arden Moore on Pet Life Radio.

00:12:24.980 --> 00:12:26.280
Announcer: We're back from the lot.

00:12:26.380 --> 00:12:29.200
Announcer: Just checked the paper, and we had our records showing at the box.

00:12:29.440 --> 00:12:30.880
Announcer: The letter box, that is.

00:12:31.040 --> 00:12:32.880
Announcer: Now back to Oh Behave.

00:12:33.020 --> 00:12:33.740
Announcer: Here's Arden.

00:12:34.140 --> 00:12:37.260
Arden Moore: Welcome back to the Oh Behave show on Pet Life Radio.

00:12:37.680 --> 00:12:48.020
Arden Moore: I'm your host, Arden Moore, and I'm pretty honored because we've got the number one person at the top, and that is the president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

00:12:48.460 --> 00:12:49.200
Arden Moore: She is Dr.

00:12:49.220 --> 00:12:52.900
Arden Moore: Rena Carlson, and the AVMA, do a little bragging.

00:12:52.920 --> 00:12:57.200
Arden Moore: I think you guys got over 105,000 members worldwide.

00:12:57.860 --> 00:12:58.320
Dr. Rena Carlson: We do.

00:13:00.380 --> 00:13:05.380
Dr. Rena Carlson: There's members from every state, a lot of members from every state and territory.

00:13:05.400 --> 00:13:17.820
Dr. Rena Carlson: We've got 60 different countries represented, and we really are the premier association that is the voice of the veterinary profession.

00:13:17.940 --> 00:13:27.660
Dr. Rena Carlson: And again, our top priority is outreach so that we can not only support veterinarians, but help animal owners and support animal health and welfare.

00:13:28.060 --> 00:13:32.700
Arden Moore: I was kind of surprised you were founded when Abe Lincoln was president.

00:13:32.720 --> 00:13:34.320
Dr. Rena Carlson: 160 years ago, yeah.

00:13:34.520 --> 00:13:37.380
Arden Moore: Somebody had a foresight mindset back then, right?

00:13:37.860 --> 00:13:38.700
Dr. Rena Carlson: Exactly.

00:13:39.020 --> 00:13:49.360
Dr. Rena Carlson: You kind of wonder, you know, what was the thought process because they absolutely set a foundation for amazing growth, amazing support of this profession.

00:13:49.780 --> 00:13:57.960
Arden Moore: So when you were a little girl, did you sit on the swing set saying, I'm going to be a veterinarian.

00:13:58.320 --> 00:13:59.380
Arden Moore: How did you get into this?

00:13:59.740 --> 00:14:10.460
Dr. Rena Carlson: Well, interestingly enough, my story is honestly different than a lot of veterinarians because our profession really is full of so many people who had that passion very early in their life.

00:14:10.480 --> 00:14:15.280
Dr. Rena Carlson: And I admire that because we're driven by our passion, right?

00:14:15.280 --> 00:14:19.980
Dr. Rena Carlson: That is our primary driver when it comes to what we do every day.

00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:22.860
Dr. Rena Carlson: And I'm very proud of that as a profession.

00:14:23.140 --> 00:14:27.920
Dr. Rena Carlson: I have to admit, I grew up in a rural area in southern Idaho.

00:14:28.520 --> 00:14:32.020
Dr. Rena Carlson: And we had animals.

00:14:32.120 --> 00:14:40.140
Dr. Rena Carlson: I was around horses and cows and pigs and of course, every species that you could think of that's in Idaho.

00:14:40.640 --> 00:14:46.140
Dr. Rena Carlson: And honestly, I dreamt of a city life somewhere because that seems so glamorous.

00:14:46.660 --> 00:14:53.800
Dr. Rena Carlson: And once I got into college, I decided that maybe wasn't quite for me and started thinking about what I'd want to do.

00:14:53.840 --> 00:14:59.360
Dr. Rena Carlson: And veterinary medicine, you know, really started to be something I started to think about.

00:14:59.600 --> 00:15:05.640
Dr. Rena Carlson: So I was definitely a late adopter, but it does not mean I have less passion for this profession.

00:15:05.740 --> 00:15:06.340
Arden Moore: Oh, no.

00:15:06.360 --> 00:15:06.640
Arden Moore: Yeah.

00:15:06.660 --> 00:15:07.440
Arden Moore: Time isn't it?

00:15:07.500 --> 00:15:10.560
Arden Moore: It's what's inside that fuels the passion engine, I think.

00:15:10.840 --> 00:15:14.700
Arden Moore: So you've done a lot and we're not making you sound like you're 90 years old because you're not.

00:15:15.020 --> 00:15:18.480
Arden Moore: But you have had to run a small animal practice, right?

00:15:18.500 --> 00:15:20.120
Arden Moore: Tell us a little bit about things you've done.

00:15:20.500 --> 00:15:20.800
Dr. Rena Carlson: Yeah.

00:15:20.820 --> 00:15:24.240
Dr. Rena Carlson: So I went to Idaho State University for my undergrad.

00:15:24.340 --> 00:15:25.300
Arden Moore: What are they called?

00:15:25.320 --> 00:15:26.280
Arden Moore: What's their mascot?

00:15:26.500 --> 00:15:27.600
Dr. Rena Carlson: Idaho State Bengals.

00:15:27.620 --> 00:15:28.360
Dr. Rena Carlson: Go Bengals.

00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:31.100
Arden Moore: Okay, they're not chickens.

00:15:31.100 --> 00:15:31.560
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:15:31.640 --> 00:15:32.540
Dr. Rena Carlson: No, no chickens.

00:15:32.560 --> 00:15:33.000
Dr. Rena Carlson: No chickens.

00:15:33.080 --> 00:15:33.960
Dr. Rena Carlson: Fierce Bengals.

00:15:33.980 --> 00:15:36.320
Dr. Rena Carlson: We are fierce Bengals and I'm a fierce supporter.

00:15:36.700 --> 00:15:41.860
Dr. Rena Carlson: But I did my undergrad and that's kind of where the whole thing started about becoming a veterinarian.

00:15:41.880 --> 00:15:46.980
Dr. Rena Carlson: And I was fortunate enough to, I worked hard and I was accepted at Washington State University.

00:15:47.000 --> 00:15:48.420
Arden Moore: Oh, that's a good vet school.

00:15:48.440 --> 00:15:48.620
Arden Moore: Yeah.

00:15:49.060 --> 00:15:53.460
Dr. Rena Carlson: Second to my beloved Bengals, I'm a Coug at heart as well.

00:15:53.820 --> 00:16:00.760
Dr. Rena Carlson: So spent four years in vet school in Pullman, Washington, some of the best years of my husband and I's lives.

00:16:01.040 --> 00:16:08.920
Dr. Rena Carlson: And then once again, it's really funny to think of as a kid, I was dreaming of, you know, city life somewhere and the glamour of city life.

00:16:09.340 --> 00:16:13.000
Dr. Rena Carlson: And we ended up moving right back to our hometown.

00:16:13.740 --> 00:16:15.900
Dr. Rena Carlson: Not necessarily thinking we would stay there.

00:16:15.920 --> 00:16:26.280
Dr. Rena Carlson: We didn't really know what was in store, but started a practice, Alpine Animal Hospital in Pocatello, Idaho, and ended up with the other associate veterinarian.

00:16:26.300 --> 00:16:29.820
Dr. Rena Carlson: We purchased the practice within about three or four years of...

00:16:30.100 --> 00:16:31.120
Arden Moore: Wow, that's fast.

00:16:31.720 --> 00:16:45.800
Dr. Rena Carlson: And we were owners for 25 years, built a new building, grew the practice from two veterinarians to six over the years, and recently sold to my earlier career associates.

00:16:46.120 --> 00:16:50.900
Dr. Rena Carlson: So they're carrying on the legacy of Alpine Animal Hospital, so I'm very proud of that.

00:16:51.180 --> 00:16:55.020
Dr. Rena Carlson: And now pursuing some fun travel with AVMA.

00:16:55.200 --> 00:16:56.240
Arden Moore: This is a big job.

00:16:56.340 --> 00:17:01.500
Arden Moore: I mean, we're getting up pre-dawn for this interview because you've got a whole day of interviews today.

00:17:01.520 --> 00:17:02.300
Dr. Rena Carlson: Yes, I do.

00:17:02.320 --> 00:17:04.300
Arden Moore: I haven't yawned once because you're pretty awesome.

00:17:04.540 --> 00:17:08.820
Arden Moore: But I mean, what is the job like to be the AVMA president?

00:17:10.160 --> 00:17:13.100
Dr. Rena Carlson: So, AVMA president is really, you know, again, that spokesperson.

00:17:13.140 --> 00:17:15.680
Dr. Rena Carlson: I want to be out there talking to the public.

00:17:15.680 --> 00:17:18.200
Dr. Rena Carlson: I want to be talking to veterinarians.

00:17:18.240 --> 00:17:29.100
Dr. Rena Carlson: And we have so many resources to support veterinarians as well as again, provide education and support for those animal owners out there.

00:17:29.220 --> 00:17:30.580
Dr. Rena Carlson: And it doesn't matter what species.

00:17:30.600 --> 00:17:34.920
Dr. Rena Carlson: Once again, we have veterinarians who are, of course, companion animal.

00:17:34.940 --> 00:17:36.360
Dr. Rena Carlson: That's primarily what I did.

00:17:36.380 --> 00:17:40.020
Dr. Rena Carlson: We have bovine practitioners, equine practitioners.

00:17:40.260 --> 00:17:42.300
Dr. Rena Carlson: We have what we call exotics.

00:17:42.360 --> 00:17:43.740
Dr. Rena Carlson: So people that work on...

00:17:43.760 --> 00:17:45.320
Arden Moore: Yeah, the chickens are big now.

00:17:45.340 --> 00:17:46.180
Arden Moore: You know, they are...

00:17:46.220 --> 00:17:48.160
Arden Moore: And bearded dragons, oh my.

00:17:48.420 --> 00:17:53.180
Dr. Rena Carlson: Reptiles, snakes, there's all kinds of exotic animals that really have unique needs.

00:17:53.500 --> 00:17:58.780
Dr. Rena Carlson: And so these veterinarians have, you know, taken the extra time to learn about those species.

00:17:59.060 --> 00:18:01.260
Dr. Rena Carlson: We have public health veterinarians.

00:18:01.260 --> 00:18:05.000
Dr. Rena Carlson: So veterinarians are out there helping protect our food supply.

00:18:05.380 --> 00:18:09.660
Dr. Rena Carlson: We have veterinarians in the military that help protect our country.

00:18:10.180 --> 00:18:17.180
Dr. Rena Carlson: We have veterinarians in research looking at new ways to treat and take care of not only animals but people.

00:18:17.380 --> 00:18:20.100
Dr. Rena Carlson: So veterinarians are in so many parts of our lives.

00:18:20.140 --> 00:18:25.300
Dr. Rena Carlson: And that's one of the things AVMA, we really want to showcase the importance of veterinary care.

00:18:26.120 --> 00:18:39.560
Dr. Rena Carlson: And I have to say one more thing really quickly because this little thing called the pandemic that we just all lived, it's a really good reason to understand what we call a one health approach.

00:18:39.860 --> 00:18:45.120
Dr. Rena Carlson: And that one health approach is healthy animals, healthy people, healthy environment.

00:18:45.140 --> 00:18:47.180
Dr. Rena Carlson: And all those are connected.

00:18:47.860 --> 00:18:51.580
Dr. Rena Carlson: And veterinarians play a key role in that in many ways.

00:18:51.580 --> 00:18:55.900
Dr. Rena Carlson: And so we work with, you know, human side, we're worried about the environment.

00:18:55.920 --> 00:19:02.340
Dr. Rena Carlson: All of those three cornerstone pieces of our world really need to work together to keep us alive.

00:19:02.360 --> 00:19:05.800
Arden Moore: I kind of like that the AVMA, I have good friends that are veterinarians.

00:19:05.820 --> 00:19:07.920
Arden Moore: And one of our guests was Dr.

00:19:07.940 --> 00:19:08.800
Arden Moore: Arnold Plotnick.

00:19:09.120 --> 00:19:13.020
Arden Moore: And he had a very good career in feline medicine in New York City.

00:19:13.320 --> 00:19:21.920
Arden Moore: And he now dedicates going to third world countries and doing rabies vaccinations and getting cats and dogs taken care of.

00:19:22.300 --> 00:19:26.440
Arden Moore: And so there is that passion that you keep saying, that engine that drives.

00:19:26.920 --> 00:19:35.920
Arden Moore: We do have a little bit of time left, and I do want to get into the summer heat with you, if I may, because it is caliente here in Texas.

00:19:36.380 --> 00:19:42.200
Arden Moore: And last year we had, I think it was two weeks in a row of 108 degrees.

00:19:42.760 --> 00:19:46.600
Arden Moore: I am a master certified pet first aid and CPR instructor.

00:19:46.620 --> 00:19:49.760
Arden Moore: I've been doing it since 2011, working with veterinarians.

00:19:50.260 --> 00:19:53.740
Arden Moore: And my dog Kona and my cat Casey are my team.

00:19:53.760 --> 00:20:01.080
Arden Moore: We actually work together and we train first responders, people that work in dog daycares, pet sitters, you name it.

00:20:01.340 --> 00:20:04.440
Arden Moore: I'm always learning from veterinarians and passing it on.

00:20:04.780 --> 00:20:07.960
Arden Moore: But big question, you're the one with the DVM after your name.

00:20:08.300 --> 00:20:10.960
Arden Moore: Dogs and cats do not sweat like we do, right?

00:20:11.420 --> 00:20:12.100
Dr. Rena Carlson: They do not.

00:20:12.100 --> 00:20:18.880
Dr. Rena Carlson: And the only way they can get rid of heat is from panting and the small amount of sweat glands that are in their paws.

00:20:19.200 --> 00:20:20.640
Dr. Rena Carlson: And their nose too.

00:20:20.660 --> 00:20:24.420
Dr. Rena Carlson: But that's so insignificant when they're getting overheated.

00:20:24.640 --> 00:20:28.680
Dr. Rena Carlson: That panting is really the most important thing for them.

00:20:29.640 --> 00:20:33.920
Dr. Rena Carlson: And this heat, they do not tolerate it very well.

00:20:34.040 --> 00:20:40.160
Arden Moore: And you know that dogs come in all different kinds of coats, double coats, no coats, cats too.

00:20:40.680 --> 00:20:48.240
Arden Moore: And because they don't have skin pores all over their body to pop out the heat, I have heard of a statistic, but you're the one that might know this.

00:20:48.500 --> 00:20:56.080
Arden Moore: On a 77 degree day, if you put your hand on the sidewalk, it is actually 125 degrees.

00:20:56.700 --> 00:21:04.740
Arden Moore: And these poor dogs could be on a tight lead while you're at a farmer's market with all four paws on that sidewalk.

00:21:04.900 --> 00:21:05.700
Arden Moore: What could happen?

00:21:06.040 --> 00:21:06.720
Dr. Rena Carlson: I've seen it.

00:21:06.800 --> 00:21:13.580
Dr. Rena Carlson: I've seen blisters on the bottom of those paws and they pretty much burn the keratin or that thick skin.

00:21:13.600 --> 00:21:16.900
Dr. Rena Carlson: It can burn right off to raw bleeding tissue.

00:21:16.900 --> 00:21:18.340
Dr. Rena Carlson: And that is so...

00:21:18.360 --> 00:21:23.020
Dr. Rena Carlson: I mean, it's awful to see because they lay down, they can't walk and it's quite painful.

00:21:23.020 --> 00:21:25.580
Dr. Rena Carlson: So again, being mindful of where you're at.

00:21:26.020 --> 00:21:36.440
Dr. Rena Carlson: And another thing that's super important, because you mentioned it, all kinds of breeds, ages, sizes, you need to talk to your veterinarian about what your specific animal can tolerate.

00:21:36.880 --> 00:21:45.000
Dr. Rena Carlson: If your animal is older with heart disease, respiratory disease, there's so many factors that come into play when it comes to what they can tolerate.

00:21:45.000 --> 00:21:47.220
Dr. Rena Carlson: So your veterinarian is your best resource.

00:21:47.480 --> 00:21:48.660
Arden Moore: I like that, yeah.

00:21:49.040 --> 00:21:57.040
Arden Moore: And I'm saying to you and asking you, sometimes dogs are so doggone loyal, they'll keep pushing themselves to please people.

00:21:57.380 --> 00:22:02.060
Arden Moore: But heat exhaustion, heat stroke is a very painful experience.

00:22:02.240 --> 00:22:11.560
Arden Moore: And I know that, but I wanted to ask you, all right, they're panting, what other things that say you got to get in the shade and you need to give them some cool water?

00:22:11.720 --> 00:22:12.100
Dr. Rena Carlson: Yes.

00:22:12.180 --> 00:22:15.940
Dr. Rena Carlson: And again, I want to emphasize not only painful, but deadly, right?

00:22:16.020 --> 00:22:21.840
Arden Moore: Yeah, I actually saw a necropsy of a dog who died of heat stroke, everybody, and the organs do boil.

00:22:22.500 --> 00:22:24.820
Dr. Rena Carlson: It is awful, and I've obviously seen it.

00:22:24.840 --> 00:22:29.140
Dr. Rena Carlson: So really, again, being prepared, I can't emphasize that enough.

00:22:29.360 --> 00:22:30.440
Dr. Rena Carlson: And watching, right?

00:22:30.460 --> 00:22:34.660
Dr. Rena Carlson: If you're going to the farmer's market, I know you're distracted with friends and things you're buying.

00:22:35.120 --> 00:22:36.720
Dr. Rena Carlson: Always keep an eye on that animal.

00:22:36.900 --> 00:22:40.180
Dr. Rena Carlson: Always have water before they start panting.

00:22:40.200 --> 00:22:44.420
Dr. Rena Carlson: Have a little water bottle that you can kind of get on their nose and say, hey, do you want some water?

00:22:44.960 --> 00:22:46.960
Arden Moore: What about dipping their paws in the water?

00:22:47.080 --> 00:22:47.960
Arden Moore: I call it, ready?

00:22:48.100 --> 00:22:49.880
Arden Moore: The paws that refresh.

00:22:50.240 --> 00:22:50.960
Dr. Rena Carlson: There you go.

00:22:50.980 --> 00:22:51.520
Arden Moore: There you go.

00:22:51.540 --> 00:22:52.420
Dr. Rena Carlson: So cool water.

00:22:52.440 --> 00:22:52.820
Dr. Rena Carlson: Yes.

00:22:53.140 --> 00:22:54.160
Dr. Rena Carlson: Try to stand the grab.

00:22:54.460 --> 00:22:57.120
Dr. Rena Carlson: Avoid the sidewalks if you can.

00:22:57.400 --> 00:23:01.800
Dr. Rena Carlson: Again, get down there and kind of gently tap it yourself and see how hot that actually is.

00:23:02.020 --> 00:23:06.480
Dr. Rena Carlson: And maybe there are times when it just isn't the right thing to take them, you know?

00:23:06.580 --> 00:23:06.960
Arden Moore: Yes.

00:23:07.300 --> 00:23:09.420
Arden Moore: What about people think more is better?

00:23:09.700 --> 00:23:12.240
Arden Moore: So you got a hot pet in the hot sun.

00:23:12.620 --> 00:23:17.960
Arden Moore: Why is it not a good thing to give them ice cubes or put ice on them?

00:23:18.040 --> 00:23:20.180
Dr. Rena Carlson: You don't want to cool them down too fast, right?

00:23:20.380 --> 00:23:22.260
Dr. Rena Carlson: You want to prevent them from getting heated.

00:23:22.480 --> 00:23:27.680
Dr. Rena Carlson: But if you see them start to pant, you see their eyes kind of have that stressed look.

00:23:27.700 --> 00:23:32.300
Dr. Rena Carlson: You see their eyes, they might be a little weak, looking weak.

00:23:32.620 --> 00:23:35.280
Dr. Rena Carlson: Anything like that, boy, you don't have a lot of time.

00:23:35.300 --> 00:23:38.500
Dr. Rena Carlson: You've got to get them medical care as soon as you can.

00:23:39.000 --> 00:23:43.680
Dr. Rena Carlson: And again, that's the key to prevention is so much better.

00:23:44.180 --> 00:23:47.040
Dr. Rena Carlson: So really think about, you know, should I even take them?

00:23:47.180 --> 00:23:53.700
Arden Moore: Yeah, I mean, I joke in my classes because I think people learn when they're having a good time and when they feel safe.

00:23:54.200 --> 00:23:58.780
Arden Moore: So I tell people I created a little saying about heat prevention.

00:23:58.800 --> 00:23:59.420
Arden Moore: Do you want to hear it?

00:23:59.440 --> 00:24:00.560
Dr. Rena Carlson: Yeah, I do, actually.

00:24:00.680 --> 00:24:04.840
Arden Moore: I say ice, ice, not nice, baby.

00:24:04.860 --> 00:24:09.660
Arden Moore: That is awesome, that is awesome.

00:24:09.720 --> 00:24:11.340
Arden Moore: Because they can go into shock.

00:24:11.780 --> 00:24:13.500
Dr. Rena Carlson: Exactly.

00:24:13.520 --> 00:24:16.240
Dr. Rena Carlson: You don't want those extreme changes.

00:24:16.240 --> 00:24:21.420
Arden Moore: I can see you dressed up as a vanilla ice wrapper, given the AVMA slogan on that.

00:24:21.420 --> 00:24:22.000
Arden Moore: How's that?

00:24:22.100 --> 00:24:23.960
Arden Moore: I gave you a whole new career, Dr.

00:24:24.080 --> 00:24:24.620
Arden Moore: Carlson.

00:24:24.640 --> 00:24:25.180
Arden Moore: Don't do that.

00:24:25.200 --> 00:24:29.520
Dr. Rena Carlson: If my kids or husband knew I was trying to dance around here, they would be horrified.

00:24:29.900 --> 00:24:32.840
Arden Moore: And we just have a couple minutes left, but water is a big thing.

00:24:32.880 --> 00:24:34.380
Arden Moore: Some dogs just dig water.

00:24:34.400 --> 00:24:40.300
Arden Moore: There's even cats that are adventure cats that like being on paddle boards and kayaks and canoes.

00:24:40.780 --> 00:24:45.420
Arden Moore: I had two dogs in my past who were original members of the SoCal Surf Dog.

00:24:45.720 --> 00:24:47.260
Arden Moore: Water, water, water safety.

00:24:47.280 --> 00:24:50.220
Arden Moore: So what's some advice you can give us, Dr.

00:24:50.240 --> 00:24:50.660
Arden Moore: Carlson?

00:24:51.140 --> 00:24:53.820
Dr. Rena Carlson: So you do want to, again, look at your individual animal.

00:24:53.840 --> 00:24:56.360
Dr. Rena Carlson: Are they really, you know, are they swimmers?

00:24:56.380 --> 00:25:00.140
Dr. Rena Carlson: Are they able to, you know, physically able to swim?

00:25:00.400 --> 00:25:01.700
Dr. Rena Carlson: Be careful where you're going.

00:25:01.900 --> 00:25:04.000
Dr. Rena Carlson: There's Giardia, there's algal blooms.

00:25:04.020 --> 00:25:07.000
Dr. Rena Carlson: There's a lot of things in that water that can be a problem.

00:25:07.020 --> 00:25:09.700
Dr. Rena Carlson: If you're out on a boat, get them a Life Fest, right?

00:25:09.740 --> 00:25:10.820
Dr. Rena Carlson: I mean, good grief.

00:25:10.900 --> 00:25:12.700
Dr. Rena Carlson: You never know when they're going to jump off the boat.

00:25:12.720 --> 00:25:14.360
Dr. Rena Carlson: They see something, boom, they're gone.

00:25:14.460 --> 00:25:17.420
Arden Moore: There's no squirrels out there for the dogs, but there's other things.

00:25:17.440 --> 00:25:18.540
Dr. Rena Carlson: There's other things.

00:25:18.560 --> 00:25:19.220
Dr. Rena Carlson: There's ripples.

00:25:19.240 --> 00:25:21.400
Dr. Rena Carlson: There's something moving and they're going to go after it.

00:25:21.420 --> 00:25:28.560
Dr. Rena Carlson: So a Life Fest can be a real, truly life saver when you're trying to scramble in to get that dog back in the boat.

00:25:28.940 --> 00:25:32.140
Arden Moore: Now, you want the life jacket with the handle on it too, right?

00:25:32.440 --> 00:25:33.820
Dr. Rena Carlson: Yes, absolutely.

00:25:34.020 --> 00:25:41.860
Dr. Rena Carlson: And that is so much easier to kind of grab that and lift them up in the boat than have them clawing around as you're trying to grab them.

00:25:42.180 --> 00:25:44.780
Dr. Rena Carlson: So once again, keep an eye on them.

00:25:44.800 --> 00:25:46.720
Dr. Rena Carlson: You just never know what they're going to do.

00:25:46.740 --> 00:25:49.340
Dr. Rena Carlson: So your attention on them is really important.

00:25:49.620 --> 00:25:52.020
Arden Moore: And I do appreciate you being here today.

00:25:52.040 --> 00:25:59.980
Arden Moore: I want everyone to please go to the avma.org and check out, they have a list for an evacuation kit.

00:26:00.160 --> 00:26:05.420
Arden Moore: You all have also some disaster preparedness planning advice.

00:26:06.840 --> 00:26:09.180
Arden Moore: So what's your parting message to all of us?

00:26:09.320 --> 00:26:14.080
Arden Moore: Lucky to have a dog, cat, chicken, bearded dragon, or whatever in our life.

00:26:14.860 --> 00:26:25.800
Dr. Rena Carlson: One of the most important things you can do is create that relationship with a veterinarian and build a trust so that when you do have a problem, you have that trusted professional.

00:26:26.280 --> 00:26:33.100
Dr. Rena Carlson: And talk about prevention, parasites, nutrition, exercise.

00:26:33.280 --> 00:26:36.780
Dr. Rena Carlson: Talk about all those things with your veterinarian because they're the best resource.

00:26:37.160 --> 00:26:42.780
Dr. Rena Carlson: avma.org is a great resource for a lot of those topics as well, not just what we talked about.

00:26:43.440 --> 00:26:52.320
Dr. Rena Carlson: And then once you've done some of that research on avma.org, take that to your veterinarian and make sure you tailor that to the specific patient, your pet.

00:26:52.760 --> 00:26:55.320
Arden Moore: Hey, I'm honored to have on our show, Dr.

00:26:55.340 --> 00:26:56.120
Arden Moore: Rena Carlson.

00:26:56.140 --> 00:26:58.380
Arden Moore: You survived being on the Oh Behave show.

00:26:58.500 --> 00:26:59.100
Arden Moore: What do you think?

00:26:59.320 --> 00:27:00.080
Dr. Rena Carlson: I'm excited.

00:27:00.100 --> 00:27:03.120
Dr. Rena Carlson: This has been awesome and I love your passion for what you do.

00:27:03.340 --> 00:27:05.420
Dr. Rena Carlson: Thanks for the therapy side of it.

00:27:05.800 --> 00:27:10.480
Dr. Rena Carlson: It's amazing the human animal bond and what animals can do to help people.

00:27:10.720 --> 00:27:15.960
Dr. Rena Carlson: So that is such an important part of our lives and our well-being in general.

00:27:15.980 --> 00:27:17.980
Dr. Rena Carlson: So thanks for all your effort.

00:27:18.000 --> 00:27:19.840
Dr. Rena Carlson: That takes a lot of time and effort.

00:27:19.980 --> 00:27:21.600
Arden Moore: Yeah, we go to memory care centers.

00:27:21.720 --> 00:27:25.540
Arden Moore: Kona and my dog and Casey, my cat, and they're hilarious.

00:27:25.580 --> 00:27:27.560
Arden Moore: They have a better sense of humor than me.

00:27:27.920 --> 00:27:28.660
Arden Moore: Hey, everybody.

00:27:28.680 --> 00:27:30.060
Arden Moore: We again thank Dr.

00:27:30.080 --> 00:27:32.080
