Arden Moore: I'm your host, Arden Moore.

00:03:30.520 --> 00:03:32.620
Arden Moore: Welcome to the show, Dan.

00:03:32.620 --> 00:03:33.440
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Thank you, Arden.

00:03:33.440 --> 00:03:35.140
Tick Man Dan Wolff: It is a pleasure to be here.

00:03:35.140 --> 00:03:41.400
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I'm so glad that we got introduced by some mutual friends and happy to spread the good word about ticks.

00:03:41.400 --> 00:03:43.000
Arden Moore: Yeah, we're going to give a shout out.

00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:49.680
Arden Moore: Jared and Kara Armour, they live in Massachusetts, as does Tick Man Dan, and they introduced me about you.

00:03:49.680 --> 00:03:50.700
Arden Moore: So I'm delighted.

00:03:50.700 --> 00:03:53.480
Arden Moore: I'm ready to dig in to talk about ticks.

00:03:53.480 --> 00:03:56.960
Arden Moore: But before I do, this show also goes on YouTube.

00:03:57.300 --> 00:04:03.700
Arden Moore: And so, Dan, you need to tell people for the ones just listening, what are you wearing?

00:04:03.700 --> 00:04:05.380
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Well, this is a Tic T.

00:04:05.380 --> 00:04:06.720
Arden Moore: Tic t-shirt, okay.

00:04:06.720 --> 00:04:11.240
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And it's part of my uniform as Tick Man Dan.

00:04:11.240 --> 00:04:17.540
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And the idea is certainly not to make fun of anything, but it's to get noticed.

00:04:17.540 --> 00:04:18.280
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Oh yeah.

00:04:18.280 --> 00:04:24.780
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Even when I'm wandering around, if I can get somebody to just look at it and go, Oh, what is that?

00:04:24.780 --> 00:04:25.640
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I can tell them.

00:04:25.640 --> 00:04:30.220
Tick Man Dan Wolff: A lot of people actually mistaken Tics for spiders.

00:04:30.220 --> 00:04:33.780
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And so when I'm walking around, a lot of people go, Oh, that's a gross spider.

00:04:33.780 --> 00:04:42.540
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And then I get a chance to engage in a conversation with them and let them know that, no, this is a Tic and how dangerous it can be.

00:04:42.540 --> 00:04:46.840
Arden Moore: There's other things that you have on you that are also Tic related.

00:04:46.840 --> 00:04:47.840
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Yes.

00:04:47.840 --> 00:04:53.880
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I often refer to this to tell my time and well, tell people that are just listening as a podcast.

00:04:53.880 --> 00:04:55.340
Arden Moore: What is that you're holding up?

00:04:55.340 --> 00:04:59.420
Tick Man Dan Wolff: It's my Tic watch and it has an adult female deer Tic on it.

00:04:59.420 --> 00:05:03.540
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And when you listen to it, it says Tic Tic Tic Tic Tic Tic Tic.

00:05:03.540 --> 00:05:07.200
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And I also have and I'm going to show you my very sexy legs.

00:05:07.200 --> 00:05:08.440
Arden Moore: So OK, guys, settle down.

00:05:10.260 --> 00:05:11.680
Arden Moore: Who's shown his calf?

00:05:11.680 --> 00:05:12.620
Arden Moore: Oh my God.

00:05:12.620 --> 00:05:13.840
Arden Moore: Two Tics.

00:05:13.840 --> 00:05:15.520
Tick Man Dan Wolff: The Tic tattoos that I have.

00:05:15.520 --> 00:05:18.960
Tick Man Dan Wolff: This is a Lone Star and this is a deer Tic.

00:05:18.960 --> 00:05:19.580
Arden Moore: Oh my God.

00:05:19.580 --> 00:05:20.720
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Those tattooed on my leg.

00:05:21.160 --> 00:05:29.420
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So actually, when I talk to people, I tell them, Oh, and by the way, I have two Tics on my leg right now.

00:05:29.420 --> 00:05:31.200
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And they go, no.

00:05:31.240 --> 00:05:34.340
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I go, yes, I promise you, I have two Tics on my leg.

00:05:34.340 --> 00:05:38.480
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And then I pull up, pull up my pants and the joke is revealed.

00:05:38.480 --> 00:05:40.540
Arden Moore: I'm so glad it's on your calf muscle.

00:05:40.540 --> 00:05:42.200
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Well, you don't know where my other ones are.

00:05:42.200 --> 00:05:43.180
Arden Moore: I'm not asking.

00:05:44.080 --> 00:05:46.080
Arden Moore: Well, the show is called Oh Behave.

00:05:46.080 --> 00:05:47.300
Arden Moore: But the point is this.

00:05:47.820 --> 00:05:54.420
Arden Moore: We're joking, but sometimes humor is needed to get out good safety information, right?

00:05:54.420 --> 00:05:55.200
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Absolutely.

00:05:55.200 --> 00:06:01.140
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And that's been my philosophy as it appears as though is your philosophy as well.

00:06:01.340 --> 00:06:06.300
Tick Man Dan Wolff: It's really important to have something that people will remember.

00:06:06.340 --> 00:06:12.260
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So while we're entertaining, we're also providing good information, which is the most important part.

00:06:12.260 --> 00:06:14.200
Tick Man Dan Wolff: But we want it to be memorable.

00:06:14.200 --> 00:06:15.480
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And that's, that's the key.

00:06:15.920 --> 00:06:21.080
Arden Moore: And the reason we asked you on the show is because you're also an inventor.

00:06:21.080 --> 00:06:29.160
Arden Moore: So you're not only interested in the ticks, but you're also interested in how to remove ticks.

00:06:29.160 --> 00:06:31.820
Arden Moore: And so some people just say, yeah, we'll do something.

00:06:31.820 --> 00:06:32.620
Arden Moore: You did some.

00:06:32.620 --> 00:06:38.280
Arden Moore: Can you bring us back to what you invented, what it was called and what it is now called?

00:06:38.280 --> 00:06:38.720
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Sure.

00:06:38.720 --> 00:06:38.960
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Sure.

00:06:38.960 --> 00:06:40.140
Tick Man Dan Wolff: That's a good question.

00:06:40.140 --> 00:06:41.960
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And it's an interesting story.

00:06:41.960 --> 00:06:47.980
Tick Man Dan Wolff: At some point in my past, I was a divorced single dad of two boys and two dogs.

00:06:47.980 --> 00:06:48.620
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Okay.

00:06:48.620 --> 00:06:51.020
Tick Man Dan Wolff: That would be Charlie and Champ.

00:06:51.020 --> 00:06:54.020
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And I became an avid outdoorsman.

00:06:54.020 --> 00:06:57.580
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So I spent a lot of time in the woods in Eastern Massachusetts.

00:06:57.580 --> 00:07:10.980
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And as many people know, the Northeast and the upper Midwest are really hotspots and have been historically in the US for ticks and in particular reported cases of Lyme disease.

00:07:10.980 --> 00:07:18.040
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So I really didn't think much about it when I was growing up in Maryland, you know, back in the 70s, never even encountered a tick.

00:07:18.040 --> 00:07:27.960
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And even when I was a young man, when we moved to the Boston area in 1977, when I was 13, and I'm telling you how old I am.

00:07:27.960 --> 00:07:28.920
Arden Moore: I've done the math.

00:07:29.760 --> 00:07:31.460
Tick Man Dan Wolff: We never encountered them.

00:07:31.460 --> 00:07:35.940
Tick Man Dan Wolff: But about 25 years ago, people started getting lime in our area.

00:07:35.940 --> 00:07:38.160
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I started seeing more and more tics.

00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:41.120
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And it's only gotten much, much worse since then.

00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:43.920
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And there's a variety of reasons for that.

00:07:43.920 --> 00:07:51.860
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And I was concerned because my 10-year-old Matt came down one day, and I noticed that he had a tick stuck in his back.

00:07:51.860 --> 00:07:58.080
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And by the way, I've been personally bitten by deer ticks in excess of 250 times.

00:07:58.080 --> 00:08:01.260
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And that's just the species deer tick deer ticks.

00:08:01.380 --> 00:08:06.400
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Yes, I've never had any lone stars or dog tics on me that I am aware of.

00:08:06.400 --> 00:08:14.520
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And so, you know, for me, you know, hey, whatever, I pull it off, not knowing how to do it correctly.

00:08:14.520 --> 00:08:19.220
Tick Man Dan Wolff: But then when my son got it on, got a tick on him, I was more concerned.

00:08:19.220 --> 00:08:21.000
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Of course, now it's him.

00:08:21.580 --> 00:08:22.700
Arden Moore: Yeah, it's Matt.

00:08:22.700 --> 00:08:24.020
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I started looking online.

00:08:24.020 --> 00:08:25.040
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I started doing research.

00:08:25.260 --> 00:08:29.320
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And I became obsessed and fascinated with ticks.

00:08:30.040 --> 00:08:35.280
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And from that point on, I just have never stopped looking at them and studying them.

00:08:35.280 --> 00:08:42.200
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And I've had an opportunity to remove, I'm guessing in excess of 3,000 live ticks from their hosts.

00:08:43.060 --> 00:08:56.680
Tick Man Dan Wolff: With every method possible, because one thing I did discover that was very relevant and very in my face was that there's so many different people telling you different things about what to do when you find an attach.

00:08:56.680 --> 00:08:57.160
Arden Moore: It is.

00:08:57.160 --> 00:09:02.940
Arden Moore: You're swimming in a pool of misinformation and probably with the abundance of ticks.

00:09:02.940 --> 00:09:05.100
Arden Moore: So, you said all different.

00:09:05.100 --> 00:09:09.360
Arden Moore: We're going to get into some of that in a minute, but I want people to know you invented something.

00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:10.220
Arden Moore: What did you invent?

00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:10.840
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I did.

00:09:10.840 --> 00:09:15.800
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Well, first of all, I want to tell you, I'm no rocket scientist here.

00:09:15.800 --> 00:09:18.620
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I just think simple is better.

00:09:18.620 --> 00:09:19.000
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I agree.

00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:38.640
Tick Man Dan Wolff: That's the philosophy that I found online regarding tick removal, and the most recommended method from the top organizations and experts that I found was simply using a fine tip tweezer to grasp the tick down at the skin surface, grasp it firmly, and lift straight up.

00:09:39.440 --> 00:09:43.780
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I was thinking to myself, this is great, I'm going to go buy tick tweezers online.

00:09:43.780 --> 00:10:01.040
Tick Man Dan Wolff: But what I found was there were no tick tweezers, or specifically for removing ticks, and the fine tip tweezers that I found could range in price from $10 to $100, depending on what type of tweezer you got.

00:10:01.040 --> 00:10:19.980
Tick Man Dan Wolff: But I also did find value in what they call a scoop method, which seems ideal for removing larger and gorge tics, mainly from animals because typically we find them after they're in gorge, because their tics are harder to find on fur covered creatures.

00:10:19.980 --> 00:10:44.120
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So I did note that that was a good method as well, given the right circumstances, and by circumstances, I mean, the right size tick in the right area on the dog or cat or pet or animals body, because you can't really scoop out a tiny nymphal stage deer tick with a scoop when it's lodged right in the crevice of the dog's ear or in the crotch or that area.

00:10:44.120 --> 00:10:47.260
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So I thought that this was a good thing to do.

00:10:47.520 --> 00:11:06.960
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So I just started sketching some designs, and what I found was that if you took a sharp tweezer, you can see that, and for all the non-video users here, it is a tweezer with a 45-degree angle and it's very sharp at the end.

00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:14.340
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So that would be the perfect tool to use, and I've had to use these on nymphal stage ticks, which are incredibly small.

00:11:14.340 --> 00:11:14.760
Arden Moore: Oh, yeah.

00:11:14.760 --> 00:11:21.180
Tick Man Dan Wolff: They have fed on occasion in my belly button, on the inner wall of my belly button.

00:11:21.200 --> 00:11:22.000
Arden Moore: Wait a minute.

00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:23.580
Arden Moore: What is your motto?

00:11:23.580 --> 00:11:28.980
Tick Man Dan Wolff: My motto is do your daily tick checks and don't neglect your crevices.

00:11:29.400 --> 00:11:30.800
Arden Moore: That means belly buttons.

00:11:30.800 --> 00:11:37.420
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Yes, belly buttons, crevices, growing area behind the ears, in the ears and other tight places.

00:11:37.420 --> 00:11:43.020
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So when you have an angled pointy tweezer like this, it's just perfect for being able to go in there.

00:11:43.020 --> 00:11:45.720
Tick Man Dan Wolff: It's not so easy if it's a straight tip tweezer.

00:11:45.720 --> 00:11:46.320
Arden Moore: I like that.

00:11:46.320 --> 00:11:53.220
Tick Man Dan Wolff: If that's all you have, then by all means use it because the trick is to get the tick out as soon as possible.

00:11:53.220 --> 00:11:56.920
Arden Moore: Isn't it about like 24 hours or less is the best?

00:11:56.920 --> 00:11:58.000
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I don't believe that at all.

00:11:58.320 --> 00:12:03.760
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I think one second is too long that a tick is attached because there's a lot going on.

00:12:03.760 --> 00:12:06.040
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I mean, if we had more time, I could get into all of this stuff.

00:12:06.040 --> 00:12:06.260
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I know.

00:12:06.260 --> 00:12:07.540
Arden Moore: I wish we did.

00:12:07.540 --> 00:12:08.920
Arden Moore: So what is this called?

00:12:08.920 --> 00:12:10.660
Arden Moore: How do people get their paws on it?

00:12:10.660 --> 00:12:12.360
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Well, let me tell you about the backside.

00:12:12.360 --> 00:12:19.740
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Here's the scoop side and this side is also angled, and it's perfect for sliding under the tick and simply lifting up.

00:12:19.740 --> 00:12:30.580
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So if you have a squirmy dog or a cat that doesn't really want you messing around with them too much like my dog Henry, you're able to kind of surprise them and just go in real quick, slide it in and pop it up.

00:12:30.580 --> 00:12:34.320
Tick Man Dan Wolff: But again, only if it's in the right place and it's the right size of tick.

00:12:34.320 --> 00:12:41.600
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So I originally invented this product and it was called Tickies, the only two-sided tweezer available.

00:12:41.600 --> 00:12:51.100
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I was fortunate enough to come in contact with a company called Bug Bite Thing, after I saw them get a deal with Laurie Grenier on Shark Tank.

00:12:51.400 --> 00:12:52.660
Arden Moore: Oh, I like her, yeah.

00:12:52.660 --> 00:13:02.540
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And I reached out to them because they had a suction tool that's designed to relieve the pain and itching of insect bites and bee stings and so forth, particularly mosquitoes.

00:13:02.540 --> 00:13:20.740
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So one thing led to another and lo and behold, they bought my company last summer and they are now rebranding the Tickies product to what's called the Bug Bite Thing tick remover and we're just starting to get that out in the mass markets and other platforms for sales.

00:13:21.260 --> 00:13:23.380
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So I'm doing a lot of content here.

00:13:23.380 --> 00:13:25.100
Arden Moore: Everyone, we're speaking with Dan Wolff.

00:13:25.100 --> 00:13:33.740
Arden Moore: He's better known as Tick Man Dan and we're going to dig in to Tick Trivia, the new definition of Tick Tock.

00:13:33.740 --> 00:13:37.600
Arden Moore: We already found it on his watch and more after we take this break.

00:13:37.600 --> 00:13:40.540
Arden Moore: So keep your pets away from ticks.

00:13:40.540 --> 00:13:42.040
Arden Moore: We'll be right back.

00:13:44.860 --> 00:13:47.100
Announcer: Time for a walk on the red carpet.

00:13:47.100 --> 00:13:49.940
Announcer: Of course, Oh Behave will be back in a flash.

00:13:50.680 --> 00:13:52.380
Announcer: Right after these messages.

00:13:54.140 --> 00:13:55.320
Arden Moore: Pause up, Pet Pals.

00:13:55.320 --> 00:13:58.060
Arden Moore: Arden Moore here, your host of the Oh Behave show.

00:13:58.060 --> 00:13:58.700
Arden Moore: Me?

00:13:58.700 --> 00:13:59.300
Arden Moore: Wow.

00:13:59.300 --> 00:14:05.740
Arden Moore: Did you know there's up to 100 million free roaming cats in the United States?

00:14:05.820 --> 00:14:10.500
Arden Moore: Without spay or neuter, that number is only going to keep growing.

00:14:10.500 --> 00:14:17.240
Arden Moore: Not only does spay neuter humanely reduce the community cat population, it keeps cats healthy.

00:14:17.720 --> 00:14:24.640
Arden Moore: Scooter, the neuter cat, is on a mission to give cats an extra life by making it hip to be snipped.

00:14:24.640 --> 00:14:25.740
Arden Moore: Hey, check them out.

00:14:25.740 --> 00:14:27.300
Arden Moore: Go to givethemten.org.

00:14:29.180 --> 00:14:30.520
Arden Moore: That's givethemten.org.

Burt Ward: Hi, this is Burt Ward and you're listening to the Oh Behave Show with Arden Moore on Pet Life Radio.

00:16:10.340 --> 00:16:14.520
Burt Ward: Listen every week, same pet time, same pet channel.

00:16:18.180 --> 00:16:19.500
Announcer: We're back from the lot.

00:16:19.500 --> 00:16:22.540
Announcer: Just check the paper and we had a record showing at the box.

00:16:22.540 --> 00:16:24.140
Announcer: The letter box that is.

00:16:24.140 --> 00:16:26.100
Announcer: Now back to Oh Behave.

00:16:26.100 --> 00:16:27.740
Announcer: Here's Arden.

00:16:27.740 --> 00:16:31.200
Arden Moore: Welcome back to the Oh Behave Show on Pet Life Radio.

00:16:31.200 --> 00:16:33.600
Arden Moore: I have been looking forward to this guest all week.

00:16:33.600 --> 00:16:37.420
Arden Moore: He is Dan Wolff, better known as Pick Man Dan.

00:16:37.420 --> 00:16:39.060
Arden Moore: I was going on the sites.

00:16:39.060 --> 00:16:43.380
Arden Moore: You work with some Brainiacs and I think it's Rhode Island University.

00:16:43.480 --> 00:16:46.460
Arden Moore: Is that the one you're working with or which one are you working with?

00:16:46.460 --> 00:16:46.860
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Yes.

00:16:46.860 --> 00:16:49.620
Tick Man Dan Wolff: One of the universities I work with is University of Rhode Island.

00:16:49.620 --> 00:16:58.820
Tick Man Dan Wolff: their tickencounter.org site and program is, in my opinion, one of the best, if not the best, for content and information and prevention and awareness.

00:16:58.820 --> 00:17:05.660
Arden Moore: And your own father, the bug to know science and to help, it's genetic, right?

00:17:05.660 --> 00:17:09.320
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Well, probably not quite as genetic as I'd like.

00:17:09.320 --> 00:17:17.820
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Unfortunately, he passed away in the mid 90s, but before he died, he was the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.

00:17:17.820 --> 00:17:33.560
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So he was a big guy in research on infectious disease and public health, and certainly being in that same realm of infectious disease, because Lyme disease right now is the fastest growing vector borne illness in the country.

00:17:33.560 --> 00:17:37.140
Arden Moore: And isn't it named after someplace in Connecticut?

00:17:37.140 --> 00:17:38.000
Tick Man Dan Wolff: That's correct.

00:17:38.000 --> 00:17:46.020
Tick Man Dan Wolff: It's named after Lyme, Connecticut, where another contact friend of my father's was at Yale.

00:17:46.020 --> 00:17:59.120
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And we were they were noticing that there was a concentration of pediatric arthritis cases, a cluster of them, so to speak, in the I think it was the mid 70s.

00:17:59.120 --> 00:18:03.640
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And so it brought that to the attention of the public health people.

00:18:03.640 --> 00:18:05.740
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And the gentleman from Yale, Dr.

00:18:05.740 --> 00:18:13.900
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Sam Thier, had dispatched one of his guys, Alan Stier, out to discover and figure out what was going on.

00:18:13.900 --> 00:18:18.420
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And as a result, they found the Borrelia bacteria.

00:18:18.420 --> 00:18:18.740
Arden Moore: Wow.

00:18:18.800 --> 00:18:21.940
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And then it was deemed Lyme disease.

00:18:21.940 --> 00:18:22.500
Arden Moore: All right.

00:18:22.500 --> 00:18:23.920
Arden Moore: I've been waiting for this all week.

00:18:23.920 --> 00:18:26.600
Arden Moore: Time to play a little game, Tick Trivia.

00:18:26.600 --> 00:18:27.580
Arden Moore: You ready, Mr.

00:18:27.580 --> 00:18:28.640
Arden Moore: Tick Mandu?

00:18:28.660 --> 00:18:29.040
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I'm ready.

00:18:29.040 --> 00:18:29.280
Arden Moore: Mr.

00:18:29.280 --> 00:18:30.200
Arden Moore: Tick Mandan.

00:18:30.200 --> 00:18:30.840
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:18:30.840 --> 00:18:31.680
Arden Moore: All right.

00:18:31.680 --> 00:18:32.800
Arden Moore: True or false?

00:18:33.480 --> 00:18:34.300
Arden Moore: Ticks?

00:18:34.300 --> 00:18:34.760
Arden Moore: Jump.

00:18:34.760 --> 00:18:35.260
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Fall.

00:18:35.260 --> 00:18:35.600
Arden Moore: All right.

00:18:35.600 --> 00:18:39.400
Arden Moore: How do they get on our bodies and on the bodies of our pets?

00:18:39.400 --> 00:18:39.780
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Yes.

00:18:39.780 --> 00:18:50.560
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Ticks are physically incapable of jumping, flying or transporting themselves onto you magically.

00:18:50.560 --> 00:18:55.220
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Ticks have two methods of getting on you depending on the type of tick.

00:18:55.220 --> 00:18:55.880
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:18:55.880 --> 00:19:01.600
Tick Man Dan Wolff: All ticks are equipped with sensory organs that detect the host in some way or another.

00:19:02.580 --> 00:19:05.560
Arden Moore: Oh, like a Spidey sense, like Spider-Man, right?

00:19:05.560 --> 00:19:05.740
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Yeah.

00:19:05.740 --> 00:19:12.180
Tick Man Dan Wolff: More like a mosquito, they can sense carbon dioxide and heat and movement, vibrations, that kind of thing.

00:19:12.180 --> 00:19:12.740
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Wow.

00:19:12.740 --> 00:19:19.240
Tick Man Dan Wolff: But not all ticks, all tick species have a very developed sensory system.

00:19:19.240 --> 00:19:19.580
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:19:19.580 --> 00:19:29.480
Tick Man Dan Wolff: For example, the Lone Star tick, which is an aggressive, fast-moving, what we call hunter, will seek you out and destroy you.

00:19:31.900 --> 00:19:33.880
Arden Moore: He's like the wasp versus a bee.

00:19:33.880 --> 00:19:35.120
Arden Moore: Wasp are nasty.

00:19:35.120 --> 00:19:36.200
Arden Moore: They keep hitting you.

00:19:36.200 --> 00:19:37.180
Arden Moore: All right.

00:19:37.180 --> 00:19:37.840
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:19:37.840 --> 00:19:39.060
Tick Man Dan Wolff: You can say that.

00:19:39.060 --> 00:19:54.340
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So these Lone Star ticks who are not known for commonly carrying Lyme disease more for something called Alpha Gal Syndrome, which is horrible because it gives you a red meat allergy pretty much for life.

00:19:54.820 --> 00:20:01.240
Tick Man Dan Wolff: For some people, that's a big one because I do enjoy my red meat.

00:20:01.240 --> 00:20:03.260
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So they are called hunters.

00:20:03.260 --> 00:20:08.420
Tick Man Dan Wolff: They are now exploding onto our scene here, so they're around.

00:20:08.420 --> 00:20:16.160
Tick Man Dan Wolff: The deer ticks have a very dull sensory system, and so they do something called questing.

00:20:16.400 --> 00:20:26.720
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Questing is when they would perch themselves on the tip of a leaf or a tall grass, and they would basically wait for something to brush by, and they have little hooks.

00:20:26.720 --> 00:20:28.200
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I don't know if you can see on the shirt.

00:20:28.200 --> 00:20:28.960
Arden Moore: Yeah, I can.

00:20:28.960 --> 00:20:29.520
Arden Moore: Yeah.

00:20:29.520 --> 00:20:34.920
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Little hooks on the very ends of their front legs that act like Velcro.

00:20:34.920 --> 00:20:53.820
Tick Man Dan Wolff: They can notice something coming, but they can only sit there and start to wave their arms around, and if anything comes by, they're stuck to them, and then they will begin to crawl up and search and get into your skin through your clothes or through under your clothes, and they will find a nice moist place.

00:20:53.820 --> 00:20:54.420
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:20:54.420 --> 00:20:57.180
Arden Moore: Well, let's keep going because I got some other things.

00:20:57.180 --> 00:21:00.220
Arden Moore: I wish I could talk to you for hours, but I want to get some more in.

00:21:00.260 --> 00:21:09.580
Arden Moore: You did a TikTok video where you took a sheet, a white sheet or a pillowcase, tell people quickly in Western Mass or Eastern Mass what you did.

00:21:09.580 --> 00:21:14.360
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Yeah, that's called flagging for ticks, and this is how people mainly collect ticks.

00:21:14.360 --> 00:21:21.500
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And basically I stapled a towel, a light-colored towel to a dowel.

00:21:21.500 --> 00:21:25.300
Tick Man Dan Wolff: In this case, it was a garden hoe, the backside of a garden hoe.

00:21:25.300 --> 00:21:32.740
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And basically that video was at the end of February here in Massachusetts and the adult ticks were active.

00:21:32.740 --> 00:21:37.760
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So I just was waving it and dragging it across the brush.

00:21:37.760 --> 00:21:42.440
Tick Man Dan Wolff: It was actually a brushy area on the side of a dog walking trail on conservation land.

00:21:42.440 --> 00:21:50.460
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And it's funny because I did it on both sides and only the sunny side, where the sun hit it in the morning really had the tics on it.

00:21:50.460 --> 00:21:53.600
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So they were all concentrated on that side of the trail.

00:21:53.600 --> 00:22:00.000
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And after only about 60 to 70 yards, I did pull off about 40 to 50 deer ticks.

00:22:00.040 --> 00:22:00.560
Arden Moore: Ouch.

00:22:00.560 --> 00:22:01.280
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:22:01.280 --> 00:22:06.180
Arden Moore: Another tick trivia when they're babies, I guess they're called nymphs, right?

00:22:06.180 --> 00:22:09.040
Tick Man Dan Wolff: They're egg larva nymph adult.

00:22:09.400 --> 00:22:10.160
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:22:10.160 --> 00:22:15.320
Arden Moore: So what does a tick nymph look like on a person's skin?

00:22:15.320 --> 00:22:17.760
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Well, I'll show you even better.

00:22:17.760 --> 00:22:19.740
Tick Man Dan Wolff: What do they look like in real life?

00:22:19.740 --> 00:22:20.660
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:22:20.660 --> 00:22:21.420
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And I don't know.

00:22:21.420 --> 00:22:26.300
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Well, for those people who don't have video, wicked small.

00:22:26.300 --> 00:22:27.240
Arden Moore: Wicked small.

00:22:27.240 --> 00:22:29.780
Arden Moore: That sounds very Boston like, oh my gosh.

00:22:29.780 --> 00:22:30.780
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I don't know if you can see.

00:22:30.780 --> 00:22:31.520
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Yeah.

00:22:31.520 --> 00:22:34.680
Arden Moore: Somebody said they look like a little seed or something, right?

00:22:34.680 --> 00:22:36.700
Tick Man Dan Wolff: They're about the size of a poppy seed.

00:22:37.100 --> 00:22:41.720
Arden Moore: Oh, so you think you just got a seed, but you know, you got a teenage tick.

00:22:41.720 --> 00:22:43.240
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Well, that's the problem.

00:22:43.240 --> 00:22:48.300
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Even though, so a tick has to get the germs from the things they feed on.

00:22:48.300 --> 00:22:56.100
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So the older a tick is, the more times it's had a chance to feed, the more of a chance it contains infectious germs.

00:22:56.100 --> 00:23:06.100
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So the nymphs being young are much less of a percentage wise of carrying disease, but more people get sick from them because they're so small and they're very hard to detect.

00:23:06.440 --> 00:23:08.180
Arden Moore: So we're out on the woods.

00:23:08.180 --> 00:23:13.520
Arden Moore: Is there any kind of clothing that will help you be more tick repellent or what do you do?

00:23:13.520 --> 00:23:24.980
Tick Man Dan Wolff: As far as clothing is concerned, my biggest recommendation and some people prefer to stay away from the chemical products, but I am convinced that this product is the best.

00:23:24.980 --> 00:23:25.500
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:23:25.520 --> 00:23:34.000
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Or it's called permethrin, part of the pyrethroid family, which was used back in the day for kids who had lice.

00:23:34.000 --> 00:23:35.260
Tick Man Dan Wolff: It was in their shampoos.

00:23:35.840 --> 00:23:38.020
Tick Man Dan Wolff: The same family of chemicals.

00:23:38.020 --> 00:23:46.940
Tick Man Dan Wolff: But nowadays, you can get permethrin to a company called Insect Shield, and you apply it to your clothing only.

00:23:46.940 --> 00:23:51.240
Tick Man Dan Wolff: It's not for your skin, and when it dries, it becomes non-water soluble.

00:23:51.240 --> 00:23:54.940
Tick Man Dan Wolff: It will kill the ticks and not just repel them, which is really important.

00:23:54.940 --> 00:23:55.580
Arden Moore: All right.

00:23:55.580 --> 00:24:01.860
Arden Moore: I've heard the expression that ticks are sometimes called germ-filled balloons.

00:24:01.860 --> 00:24:02.460
Arden Moore: What does that mean?

00:24:02.880 --> 00:24:11.580
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Well, essentially, in the simplest terms, they're a squishy sack with a hollow tube that's sharp and barbed.

00:24:11.580 --> 00:24:17.100
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And so if you think of it that way, they are more like a cesspool of a sack of germs.

00:24:17.100 --> 00:24:24.840
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And so when they're feeding, they expand like a water balloon, filling up with your blood and spitting and sucking and spitting.

00:24:24.840 --> 00:24:27.180
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So it's pretty gross.

00:24:27.180 --> 00:24:35.420
Tick Man Dan Wolff: But that's how they can transfer or vector these harmful pathogens from themselves into your body.

00:24:35.420 --> 00:24:40.160
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So you don't want to squeeze that body while it's attached.

00:24:40.160 --> 00:24:42.080
Tick Man Dan Wolff: You don't want to tear it open.

00:24:42.080 --> 00:24:43.280
Arden Moore: It's like zigzag.

00:24:43.280 --> 00:24:50.560
Tick Man Dan Wolff: You don't want to pop it, tear it open or agitated or put heat or oil or anything else on it while it's attached to you.

00:24:50.560 --> 00:24:56.400
Arden Moore: So getting it removed like with a tick tool like you have is a smart thing to do.

00:24:56.400 --> 00:24:59.720
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Yeah, because if you use your fingers, some people like, oh, I just use my fingers.

00:25:00.200 --> 00:25:02.180
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I mean, listen, do whatever you want.

00:25:02.180 --> 00:25:11.020
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I'm here to tell you that it's not a good idea because your fingers are fat compared to a tick, and you may possibly squeeze it or even tear it.

00:25:11.020 --> 00:25:16.260
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Then now you have what I call yucky tick juice on your fingers near that bite site.

00:25:16.260 --> 00:25:17.300
Arden Moore: You rub your eyes.

00:25:17.300 --> 00:25:24.240
Tick Man Dan Wolff: You rub your eye, scratch your nose, any of that stuff and it could potentially expose you to those risks.

00:25:24.240 --> 00:25:26.080
Arden Moore: A wives tale, true or false.

00:25:26.080 --> 00:25:29.220
Arden Moore: Let's just drown the tick in petroleum jelly.

00:25:29.580 --> 00:25:31.140
Arden Moore: That'll work, does it?

00:25:31.140 --> 00:25:38.520
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Yeah, it might work, but you're just agitating and poisoning and killing that tick while it's attached to you, which can't be good.

00:25:38.520 --> 00:25:42.880
Tick Man Dan Wolff: What you want to do is pull that tick out, surprise it, pull it out.

00:25:42.880 --> 00:25:47.700
Tick Man Dan Wolff: If the tick is wandering around and walking and is okay, you've done it right.

00:25:47.700 --> 00:25:50.720
Tick Man Dan Wolff: But you don't want to find pieces of that tick or tear it.

00:25:50.720 --> 00:25:54.460
Arden Moore: How do you dispose of a removed tick safely?

00:25:54.460 --> 00:26:00.260
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Well, if it was removed from a human, I strongly suggest that you don't dispose of it.

00:26:00.260 --> 00:26:01.040
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:26:01.040 --> 00:26:02.260
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Save the tick.

00:26:02.260 --> 00:26:12.460
Tick Man Dan Wolff: If you have a dog that's been getting tons and tons of ticks, it may not be so necessary to save the tick because I'm talking about sending it in for testing.

00:26:12.460 --> 00:26:12.960
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:26:12.960 --> 00:26:15.220
Arden Moore: To make sure you don't have a tick-borne disease.

00:26:15.220 --> 00:26:44.780
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Well, just to make sure you know what's in that tick that bit you doesn't necessarily mean that whatever was in that tick is going to infect you, but it helps you and your physician make a decision on treating yourself if in fact you start to feel symptoms because the onset of symptoms of most tick-borne illnesses are very similar to each other and they will be fever, headache, fatigue, joint pain.

00:26:44.780 --> 00:26:47.820
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Any of those symptoms can be a result of tick-borne illness.

00:26:48.500 --> 00:26:57.340
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So what's nice to know is, was since ticks can carry bacterium, viruses, and parasites.

00:26:57.340 --> 00:26:58.100
Arden Moore: Oh, wonderful.

00:26:58.100 --> 00:26:59.280
Arden Moore: Trifecta.

00:26:59.280 --> 00:26:59.500
Arden Moore: Right.

00:26:59.500 --> 00:27:01.000
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And you can get them from one bite.

00:27:01.000 --> 00:27:02.160
Tick Man Dan Wolff: You can get all three.

00:27:02.380 --> 00:27:05.120
Tick Man Dan Wolff: It's rare, but they're called co-infections.

00:27:05.120 --> 00:27:07.620
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And a bacteria is treated with antibiotics.

00:27:07.620 --> 00:27:13.300
Tick Man Dan Wolff: viruses are not treated pretty much with anything just to make you feel better until it runs its course.

00:27:13.300 --> 00:27:20.180
Tick Man Dan Wolff: But parasites are treated with other medications, not antibiotics, and more like malarial drugs.

00:27:20.180 --> 00:27:28.340
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So if you pull off a tick, you save it, you start to feel sick, you send it in, and it says negative for Lyme, but positive for Babesia.

00:27:28.340 --> 00:27:28.780
Arden Moore: I like that.

00:27:28.780 --> 00:27:29.700
Arden Moore: Where do you send it?

00:27:29.700 --> 00:27:33.420
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I work with another university, University of Massachusetts here.

00:27:33.420 --> 00:27:40.140
Tick Man Dan Wolff: They've actually, the tick lab that I sent to moved out of that umbrella, but is still located in the same town.

00:27:40.140 --> 00:27:42.020
Tick Man Dan Wolff: It's called tickreport.com.

00:27:43.280 --> 00:27:46.040
Arden Moore: tickreport.com, good.

00:27:46.600 --> 00:27:55.260
Tick Man Dan Wolff: They'll send you an answer within 72 hours of receiving that tick, and the PCR testing is highly accurate.

00:27:55.260 --> 00:28:05.360
Arden Moore: I can just imagine you on an airplane, in an elevator, at a social gathering, and people are saying, so Dan, what do you do for a living?

00:28:05.360 --> 00:28:09.260
Arden Moore: I'm glad you don't say I sell insurance, because you probably nobody will talk to you.

00:28:09.260 --> 00:28:11.220
Arden Moore: You must have to fend off people.

00:28:11.320 --> 00:28:14.080
Arden Moore: You must be like a rock star when they know what to do.

00:28:14.080 --> 00:28:16.760
Tick Man Dan Wolff: When I was single, I have this phone.

00:28:16.760 --> 00:28:20.360
Tick Man Dan Wolff: On the back of my phone is a ticket says, please ask me about tics.

00:28:20.360 --> 00:28:26.900
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And what I do is I belly up to the bar, leave it on the bar in a very visible spot.

00:28:26.900 --> 00:28:28.500
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And you could see people looking at it.

00:28:28.500 --> 00:28:31.620
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And sometimes they would just kind of look and make a face.

00:28:31.620 --> 00:28:34.520
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And then eventually, I know maybe they have had a couple of drinks.

00:28:34.520 --> 00:28:37.180
Tick Man Dan Wolff: They're like, all right, what is this?

00:28:37.180 --> 00:28:38.520
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Ask me about tics.

00:28:38.520 --> 00:28:40.640
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And then we start up a conversation.

00:28:40.860 --> 00:28:42.280
Arden Moore: So how do people follow you?

00:28:42.280 --> 00:28:44.940
Arden Moore: I can't I can talk to you all day, but we got to wrap things up.

00:28:44.940 --> 00:28:46.580
Arden Moore: How do people follow you?

00:28:46.580 --> 00:28:49.760
Arden Moore: Dan Wolff, Tic Man Dan at Tic Man Dan.

00:28:49.760 --> 00:28:55.060
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I'm on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Tic Toc and YouTube.

00:28:55.060 --> 00:29:02.400
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So I'm just building that up now because once I had sold the company, the previous company, I really had to start from scratch.

00:29:02.400 --> 00:29:04.620
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So I am a content machine right now.

00:29:04.620 --> 00:29:07.760
Tick Man Dan Wolff: So if you want information, it's best to go.

00:29:07.920 --> 00:29:13.220
Tick Man Dan Wolff: And please, everybody, your best support could be through liking, following, subscribing.

00:29:13.220 --> 00:29:13.940
Arden Moore: Exactly.

00:29:13.940 --> 00:29:14.700
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Anything like that.

00:29:14.700 --> 00:29:16.500
Arden Moore: Well, I'm going to do that for you.

00:29:16.500 --> 00:29:18.980
Arden Moore: I hope you'll follow my YouTube channel, Arden Moore.

00:29:18.980 --> 00:29:19.820
Tick Man Dan Wolff: I already did.

00:29:19.820 --> 00:29:20.060
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:29:20.060 --> 00:29:22.380
Arden Moore: We're already Facebook buds, I think, right?

00:29:22.380 --> 00:29:22.680
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Yep.

00:29:22.680 --> 00:29:23.300
Arden Moore: Okay.

00:29:23.300 --> 00:29:29.560
Arden Moore: I just feel like I met a brother from a different mother and I love that you are helping and using humor.

00:29:29.560 --> 00:29:30.960
Arden Moore: So I'm serious, man.

00:29:30.960 --> 00:29:36.480
Arden Moore: You've been one of my most favorite guests I've had in a Tic Tic Tic long time.

00:29:36.480 --> 00:29:37.340
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Well, thank you so much.

00:29:37.420 --> 00:29:39.100
Arden Moore: You ticked me off in a good way.

00:29:39.100 --> 00:29:39.900
Arden Moore: What else can we say?

00:29:39.900 --> 00:29:41.460
Arden Moore: Come on, throw some puns at me.

00:29:41.460 --> 00:29:45.500
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Tickled pink and it's been a fantastic interview.

00:29:45.500 --> 00:29:46.820
Arden Moore: Oh my God.

00:29:46.820 --> 00:29:53.300
Tick Man Dan Wolff: Oh, let me tell you, if people want to contact me before I start charging, I have a tick line.

00:29:53.840 --> 00:29:55.480

Tick Man Dan Wolff: I will look into that call and I help people take the steps necessary to reduce their exposure any way I can.
