The Oh Behave Show Salutes Dogtopia's Jordan Cerrillo and Gretchen Evans
Say it and then do it. That is the mantra for our special Oh Behave show guests Jordan Cerrillo and Gretchen Evans. Tune in as you will discover how Jordan, a Dogtopia regional manager in Wisconsin, said he would and then did complete a 101-mile run over Memorial Day to raise awareness and funds for service dogs to be paired with military veterans. He was joined in the final 10 miles by Gretchen, the Dogtopia Foundation veteran and highly decorated retired Command Sergeant Major. She survived a blast in combat that took away her hearing but is now paired up with a service dog named Rusty and is an in-demand motivational speaker.

BIO:
Jordan Cerrillo is the Regional Manager for Dogtopia in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and Woodbury, Minnesota. Jordan was not a runner before he embarked on his journey to run 101 miles from one of his Dogtopia locations to the other – he just wanted to help out a great cause: raising money in donations for the Dogtopia Foundation, all the money he raised will be donated in support of service dogs for veterans in need.
Gretchen’s full title is retired Command Sergeant Major Gretchen Evans. She is a Dogtopia Foundation ambassador who joined Jordan for the final 10 miles of his run. This cause is near and dear to Gretchen as she endured life-threatening injuries in service in Afghanistan. She found strength in the companionship of her service dogs. Her story was recognized with the prestigious Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2022 ESPYs.

Arden Moore: Another survived a rocket blast in Afghanistan during her stellar army career.
00:01:15.720 --> 00:01:19.980
Arden Moore: Both got together and said, Hey, let's team up.
00:01:19.980 --> 00:01:21.540
Arden Moore: And team up they did.
00:01:21.540 --> 00:01:30.820

Announcer: Our small family farm produces live organic cat grass, catnip and soft chew treats packed with green nutrition to help your pets truly thrive inside.
00:02:04.440 --> 00:02:16.000
Announcer: We're partnering with pioneer cat behavior expert and best selling author Pam Johnson-Bennett to help indoor cats live their best lives with indoor enrichment tips for their parents.
00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:21.540
Pam Johnson-Bennett: Anyone who knows me knows I am a very strong proponent for cats being indoors.
00:02:21.540 --> 00:02:30.420
Pam Johnson-Bennett: But when we bring cats indoors where I feel it's safest, we have an obligation to make sure they have a fulfilling life that they get enrichment.
00:02:30.420 --> 00:02:36.700
Pam Johnson-Bennett: And part of that enrichment is encouraging health and a big part of that health is cat grass.
00:02:36.700 --> 00:02:39.720
Pam Johnson-Bennett: Cat grass helps with the prevention of hairballs.
00:02:39.720 --> 00:02:42.720
Pam Johnson-Bennett: It can help keep your cat away from houseplants.
00:02:42.720 --> 00:02:44.980
Pam Johnson-Bennett: It's also fun for your cat.
00:02:44.980 --> 00:02:51.320
Pam Johnson-Bennett: It's a natural behavior that your cat wants to chew and you know that you're providing it in a safe way.
00:02:51.320 --> 00:02:57.500

Arden Moore: Please at this time, give pause and applause from Dogtopia.
00:03:28.140 --> 00:03:32.720
Arden Moore: We have Jordan Cerrillo and Gretchen Evans.
00:03:32.720 --> 00:03:33.080
Arden Moore: Welcome.
00:03:33.080 --> 00:03:33.700
Arden Moore: Welcome.
00:03:33.700 --> 00:03:34.160
Jordan Cerrillo: Thank you.
00:03:34.160 --> 00:03:34.460
Gretchen Evans: Thank you.
00:03:34.460 --> 00:03:35.040
Jordan Cerrillo: Thank you.
00:03:35.040 --> 00:03:35.860
Gretchen Evans: Thank you so much.
00:03:35.860 --> 00:03:37.020
Gretchen Evans: Happy to be here.
00:03:37.020 --> 00:03:38.040
Arden Moore: Oh my gosh.
00:03:38.040 --> 00:03:39.360
Arden Moore: Everyone, come on.
00:03:39.360 --> 00:03:43.400
Arden Moore: For the three people on the planet that don't know Dogtopia, Mr.
00:03:43.400 --> 00:03:47.620
Arden Moore: Jordan, you are a regional manager for them based out of Wisconsin.
00:03:47.620 --> 00:03:50.220
Arden Moore: Quickly tell people what the heck is Dogtopia.
00:03:50.540 --> 00:03:51.040
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah.
00:03:51.040 --> 00:04:00.080
Jordan Cerrillo: So Dogtopia is a spot where you can take your dog, whether you're going to work or if you just need them to get some socialization or exercise.
00:04:00.080 --> 00:04:01.660
Jordan Cerrillo: This is a safe place to do so.
00:04:01.660 --> 00:04:10.680
Jordan Cerrillo: So we are an open facility dog daycare center, and the dog that do really well in our daycare center, get the opportunities to be able to board overnight with us.
00:04:10.680 --> 00:04:16.340
Jordan Cerrillo: So if you're going out of town and you just want a safe space for your dog to be, we're going to be that space for you.
00:04:16.340 --> 00:04:16.580
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah.
00:04:16.580 --> 00:04:19.380
Arden Moore: You do grooming, but you also do spa.
00:04:19.380 --> 00:04:19.940
Arden Moore: I'm jealous.
00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:20.580
Jordan Cerrillo: Yes.
00:04:20.580 --> 00:04:22.500
Arden Moore: You have a spa.
00:04:22.500 --> 00:04:22.840
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah.
00:04:22.840 --> 00:04:26.700
Jordan Cerrillo: So we're always finding ways to spoil your pups.
00:04:26.700 --> 00:04:35.400
Jordan Cerrillo: So yeah, some of our included services are like doing dog baths, those brush outs, nail trims, those spa services to make them look nice and pretty.
00:04:35.400 --> 00:04:38.200
Jordan Cerrillo: And then a lot of Dogtopias have a certified groomer.
00:04:38.200 --> 00:04:40.340
Jordan Cerrillo: So we're able to do those haircuts as well.
00:04:40.340 --> 00:04:40.720
Arden Moore: All right.
00:04:40.720 --> 00:04:43.420
Arden Moore: Well, I'll let my dogs, Kona and Emma know about it though.
00:04:43.460 --> 00:04:44.260
Arden Moore: They'll be booking.
00:04:44.260 --> 00:04:53.040
Arden Moore: And we also, I come from a military family and I really want to salute our other special guest and she is retired command.
00:04:53.040 --> 00:04:54.340
Arden Moore: Oh, let me get this right.
00:04:54.340 --> 00:04:56.400
Arden Moore: Command Sergeant Major?
00:04:56.400 --> 00:04:57.080
Gretchen Evans: Major.
00:04:57.080 --> 00:04:57.440
Gretchen Evans: Yes.
00:04:57.440 --> 00:04:58.080
Arden Moore: Wow.
00:04:58.080 --> 00:04:59.860
Arden Moore: Now I've been schooled.
00:04:59.860 --> 00:05:02.520
Arden Moore: My wife was one of the first combat MPs.
00:05:02.520 --> 00:05:05.160
Arden Moore: She was a staff sergeant in the army nine years.
00:05:05.160 --> 00:05:10.420
Arden Moore: And she said, Arden, when the title has command in front of it, that's a big deal.
00:05:10.420 --> 00:05:12.520
Arden Moore: So tell us what that means Gretchen.
00:05:12.980 --> 00:05:22.880
Gretchen Evans: When you have the command before your rank as a sergeant major, that means that you are in command of troops.
00:05:22.880 --> 00:05:30.000
Gretchen Evans: So sergeant majors can be staff people who, you know, logistics and things such as like this.
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:38.580
Gretchen Evans: But when they select you specifically to be in command of troops, then you get the honor of having the command in front of your, in front of your title.
00:05:38.580 --> 00:05:40.980
Arden Moore: Does that get you ahead on dinner reservations?
00:05:41.820 --> 00:05:43.600
Gretchen Evans: No, not really.
00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:46.880
Gretchen Evans: Well, like you, most people don't even know what it means.
00:05:46.880 --> 00:05:50.460
Arden Moore: Well, but also you too have a connection with Dogtopia.
00:05:50.460 --> 00:05:52.440
Arden Moore: Can you tell everybody what that is?
00:05:52.440 --> 00:05:53.000
Gretchen Evans: Yes.
00:05:53.000 --> 00:06:00.140
Gretchen Evans: So I am so honored and pleased to be considered the ambassador for the Dogtopia Foundation.
00:06:00.140 --> 00:06:12.360
Gretchen Evans: And the foundation is the, is a great organization that raises funds and awareness to get service dogs into the hands of veterans who need them the most.
00:06:12.360 --> 00:06:16.660
Gretchen Evans: And they have two other things that they really are, strive to do.
00:06:16.660 --> 00:06:33.780
Gretchen Evans: And that is hiring people who are on the autistic spectrum to work in their Dogtopia businesses and also the Read Along program where children can go and read to a dog who is the perfect audience for a child who may be shy in reading out loud.
00:06:34.640 --> 00:06:45.360
Gretchen Evans: So I travel throughout the United States and represent the Dogtopia Foundation and talk about what a wonderful thing they're doing that's changing and saving lives every day.
00:06:45.360 --> 00:06:49.360
Arden Moore: And I want people to go to a couple sites after our show.
00:06:49.360 --> 00:06:55.140
Arden Moore: Is it dogtopiafoundation.org Jordan and just dogtopia.com?
00:06:55.140 --> 00:06:57.800
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah, so that is the right sites.
00:06:57.800 --> 00:07:04.300
Jordan Cerrillo: If you want to go to the foundation and you want to see what we do on a national level, dogtopiafoundation.org is going to be the right spot.
00:07:04.300 --> 00:07:11.440
Jordan Cerrillo: And then, yeah, depending on where you live in the area, you can find out where all the active locations are at dogtopia.com.
00:07:11.440 --> 00:07:17.500
Jordan Cerrillo: But if you do know that there's one in your neighborhood, just if you know the name, look it up and it'll be there for you.
00:07:17.500 --> 00:07:17.680
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah.
00:07:18.020 --> 00:07:24.140
Arden Moore: So we know how we're going to get into Retired Army Grand Poobar Gretchen in a minute.
00:07:24.140 --> 00:07:26.420
Arden Moore: But Jordan, this is kind of cool.
00:07:26.420 --> 00:07:32.340
Arden Moore: You just ran 101 miles to raise money to help get service dogs.
00:07:32.340 --> 00:07:35.280
Arden Moore: And you weren't really a runner?
00:07:35.280 --> 00:07:35.820
Jordan Cerrillo: No.
00:07:35.820 --> 00:07:41.400
Jordan Cerrillo: And if my family is watching this or when they watch this, they will, they can second that.
00:07:41.400 --> 00:07:45.940
Jordan Cerrillo: I was the type growing up, I loved playing like basketball, baseball.
00:07:46.740 --> 00:07:49.620
Jordan Cerrillo: I could run, but it had to be distracting.
00:07:49.620 --> 00:07:51.460
Jordan Cerrillo: It couldn't be the main focus.
00:07:51.460 --> 00:07:57.040
Jordan Cerrillo: Like I never liked doing the mile in high school for the presidential fitness.
00:07:57.060 --> 00:08:02.740
Jordan Cerrillo: I never, when I got out of sports and I got out of high school, I never ran.
00:08:02.740 --> 00:08:08.740
Jordan Cerrillo: And it was something that I really wanted to challenge myself to do.
00:08:08.740 --> 00:08:19.260
Jordan Cerrillo: But also I think the biggest thing was that I wanted to find a way where how could I draw as much attention on the foundation and these efforts as possible.
00:08:19.260 --> 00:08:21.200
Jordan Cerrillo: And I knew I had to do something crazy.
00:08:21.200 --> 00:08:24.420
Jordan Cerrillo: So I decided 101 miles would be crazy enough.
00:08:24.420 --> 00:08:26.380
Arden Moore: Well, there was a movie 101 Dalmatians.
00:08:26.380 --> 00:08:31.720
Arden Moore: Now there's 101 miles completed by Jordan Cerrillo, which is pretty awesome.
00:08:31.720 --> 00:08:34.080
Arden Moore: I mean, what is your running style?
00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:35.620
Arden Moore: Do you have a long gait?
00:08:35.620 --> 00:08:36.900
Arden Moore: Do you pray a lot?
00:08:37.080 --> 00:08:38.940
Arden Moore: What's your running style?
00:08:38.940 --> 00:08:40.140
Arden Moore: Do you lumber?
00:08:40.140 --> 00:08:40.540
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah.
00:08:40.540 --> 00:08:49.900
Jordan Cerrillo: So my running style, it's called the ultra shuffle, which can be very easily confused with somebody who looks like they're just kind of jogging.
00:08:49.900 --> 00:08:56.580
Jordan Cerrillo: So it's really short strides and it's just kind of like, you don't want to use up too much energy.
00:08:56.580 --> 00:09:01.100
Jordan Cerrillo: Like when you see people running marathons or in their runs, there's like a really long stride.
00:09:01.100 --> 00:09:06.520
Jordan Cerrillo: Mine is not that since I'm not trying to cover a short distance, I'm covering a long one.
00:09:06.520 --> 00:09:08.340
Jordan Cerrillo: It's this little like kind of shuffle.
00:09:08.340 --> 00:09:10.780
Arden Moore: And how long did you train to do this?
00:09:11.300 --> 00:09:15.720
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah, so I trained starting early.
00:09:15.720 --> 00:09:17.580
Jordan Cerrillo: Like it was about eight months of training.
00:09:17.580 --> 00:09:26.720
Jordan Cerrillo: And I want to say it was like early September was when I was like, okay, I really needed to make a decision on whether or not I'm actually going to be able to do this.
00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:32.120
Arden Moore: And for everybody out there, Gretchen joined you for the final 10 miles.
00:09:32.120 --> 00:09:35.280
Arden Moore: Gretchen, please tell people you have a service dog.
00:09:35.280 --> 00:09:38.720
Arden Moore: And I don't think you have long strides anymore, right?
00:09:39.680 --> 00:09:45.460
Gretchen Evans: So when I found out that Jordan was doing this, I really wanted to be a part of it.
00:09:45.460 --> 00:09:50.140
Gretchen Evans: And I told him, I said, I want to join you for the whole thing, but I've got a release for the day.
00:09:50.140 --> 00:09:55.500
Gretchen Evans: You're getting out that I'd already signed up with my adaptive team, Team Unbroken.
00:09:55.500 --> 00:10:05.160
Gretchen Evans: So I said, I'll fly from Chicago to Minneapolis, and I'll catch you at the last 10 miles of your run and just give him a little bit of encouragement when he really needed it the most.
00:10:05.160 --> 00:10:07.080
Gretchen Evans: Perhaps this, I'm a distance runner too.
00:10:07.860 --> 00:10:11.500
Gretchen Evans: I'm an endurance athlete, so I know how that feels those last 10 miles.
00:10:11.500 --> 00:10:16.020
Gretchen Evans: It's exciting, but you really want to be done, and encouragement is really important.
00:10:16.020 --> 00:10:28.640
Gretchen Evans: So anyway, my stride is, I match my stride to whoever I'm running with, but if it was just a team, I do run pretty fast on occasion, and I'm starting to slow down.
00:10:28.820 --> 00:10:33.780
Gretchen Evans: I'm in my 60s and starting to get some wear and tear, but I'm still a pretty good runner.
00:10:33.780 --> 00:10:34.280
Jordan Cerrillo: Oh yeah.
00:10:34.660 --> 00:10:36.280
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah, she definitely was.
00:10:36.280 --> 00:10:40.260
Jordan Cerrillo: You could tell just when she was out there with me, like don't let anything fool you.
00:10:40.260 --> 00:10:41.260
Jordan Cerrillo: She can throw it out.
00:10:41.260 --> 00:10:47.820
Arden Moore: You got a military woman telling you, don't drop and give me 20, run and give me 10 more, right?
00:10:47.820 --> 00:10:48.660
Arden Moore: 10 more miles.
00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:55.220
Jordan Cerrillo: I was actually glad she didn't run the full 100 with me because she would have shown me up.
00:10:55.220 --> 00:10:57.340
Jordan Cerrillo: I would have been just in the dust.
00:10:57.340 --> 00:10:58.920
Jordan Cerrillo: She would have been way ahead of me.
00:10:58.920 --> 00:11:02.160
Arden Moore: So over what time period did you do this distance?
00:11:02.340 --> 00:11:06.720
Arden Moore: And I know it wasn't it started on Memorial Day weekend in Wisconsin?
00:11:06.720 --> 00:11:07.040
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah.
00:11:07.040 --> 00:11:13.000
Jordan Cerrillo: So I started on Sunday, which I believe was the 26th or 25th.
00:11:13.000 --> 00:11:14.320
Jordan Cerrillo: I'm getting confused.
00:11:14.320 --> 00:11:14.880
Jordan Cerrillo: 26.
00:11:14.880 --> 00:11:15.600
Jordan Cerrillo: Thank you.
00:11:15.600 --> 00:11:18.340
Jordan Cerrillo: I started on the 26th at 7 a.m.
00:11:18.340 --> 00:11:23.480
Jordan Cerrillo: And then I ran through the night into Memorial Day.
00:11:23.480 --> 00:11:25.060
Arden Moore: Oh, so you didn't sleep?
00:11:25.440 --> 00:11:26.200
Jordan Cerrillo: No, no.
00:11:26.200 --> 00:11:27.040
Arden Moore: Wow.
00:11:27.040 --> 00:11:30.320
Arden Moore: Seriously, dude, have you ever done a 10 or 5K before?
00:11:30.320 --> 00:11:33.780
Jordan Cerrillo: I did like maybe when I was a kid, I did something similar.
00:11:33.780 --> 00:11:35.260
Arden Moore: You hit the president's mile.
00:11:35.260 --> 00:11:36.940
Arden Moore: I heard you like that.
00:11:36.940 --> 00:11:37.340
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah.
00:11:37.340 --> 00:11:42.200
Jordan Cerrillo: But otherwise before that, no, up until the training, I did the training for it.
00:11:42.200 --> 00:11:51.780
Jordan Cerrillo: So like the farthest I got in training was I ran a 50-miler overnight to like simulate what it would be like on no sleep running the distance.
00:11:51.780 --> 00:12:00.340
Jordan Cerrillo: But prior to any of the training, anything like that, no, I had no idea of what it even took to run a 3K or 5K or 3 miles.
00:12:00.340 --> 00:12:04.480
Arden Moore: Were there others involved or you just had a bunch of cheerleaders around you or what?
00:12:04.480 --> 00:12:06.060
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah, that was my aid team.
00:12:06.060 --> 00:12:09.060
Jordan Cerrillo: So we had, my fiance was out there.
00:12:09.060 --> 00:12:11.260
Jordan Cerrillo: She rode a bike to kind of help just be there for me.
00:12:11.260 --> 00:12:12.900
Arden Moore: Say her first name so she loves you.
00:12:12.900 --> 00:12:13.940
Jordan Cerrillo: Mikayla.
00:12:13.940 --> 00:12:14.900
Jordan Cerrillo: Mikayla.
00:12:14.900 --> 00:12:17.900
Jordan Cerrillo: Mikayla, my beautiful fiance, super supportive.
00:12:18.220 --> 00:12:21.260
Jordan Cerrillo: She ran a track in college in cross-country.
00:12:21.260 --> 00:12:23.300
Jordan Cerrillo: So she was kind of like my coach as well.
00:12:23.300 --> 00:12:28.520
Jordan Cerrillo: And we had a band that followed me with some of my family members in there.
00:12:28.520 --> 00:12:31.720
Arden Moore: You're kind of like the Diane Nyad of the bland.
00:12:31.720 --> 00:12:34.040
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah, she is way better than I am.
00:12:34.040 --> 00:12:34.620
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah.
00:12:34.620 --> 00:12:39.660
Jordan Cerrillo: She what she did across the from Cuba to Florida was it?
00:12:39.660 --> 00:12:40.660
Jordan Cerrillo: That's insane.
00:12:40.660 --> 00:12:41.780
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah, that's insane.
00:12:41.780 --> 00:12:42.960
Arden Moore: Hey, everyone.
00:12:42.960 --> 00:12:46.060
Arden Moore: We're speaking with Gretchen Evans and Jordan Cerrillo.
00:12:46.400 --> 00:13:02.220
Arden Moore: They are with Dogtopia and we're going to dive in to a little bit more about this 101 mile run they did and why y'all need to pay attention to it because they're trying to get trained service dogs paired up with a military veterans.
00:13:02.220 --> 00:13:05.280
Arden Moore: So we're going to take a short break and you all know the drill.
00:13:05.280 --> 00:13:07.240
Arden Moore: Oh, I said a drill in front of a sergeant.
00:13:07.240 --> 00:13:08.000
Arden Moore: I can't believe it.
00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:09.140
Arden Moore: We're going to sit.
00:13:09.140 --> 00:13:09.940
Arden Moore: Stay.
00:13:09.940 --> 00:13:10.560
Arden Moore: We'll be right back.
00:13:14.140 --> 00:13:17.260
Announcer: Time for a walk on the red carpet, of course.
00:13:17.260 --> 00:13:21.640
Announcer: Oh Behave will be back in a flash right after these messages.
00:13:24.040 --> 00:13:25.220
Arden Moore: pause up, Pet Pals.
00:13:25.220 --> 00:13:27.960
Arden Moore: Arden Moore here, your host of the Oh Behave show.
00:13:27.960 --> 00:13:28.600
Arden Moore: Me-
00:13:28.600 --> 00:13:29.200
Arden Moore: Wow.
00:13:29.200 --> 00:13:40.000
Arden Moore: Did you know there's up to 100 million free roaming cats in the United States and without spay or neuter, that number is only going to keep growing.
00:13:40.460 --> 00:13:47.540
Arden Moore: Not only does spay neuter humanely reduce the community cat population, it keeps cats healthy.
00:13:47.540 --> 00:13:54.540
Arden Moore: Scooter, the neuter cat, is on a mission to give cats an extra life by making it hip to be snipped.
00:13:54.540 --> 00:13:55.640
Arden Moore: Hey, check them out.
00:13:55.640 --> 00:13:57.200
Arden Moore: Go to givethemten.org.
00:13:59.080 --> 00:14:07.000
Arden Moore: That's givethemten.org and help us make this a better world for cats.

Charles Martin Smith: Hi, this is Charles Martin Smith, Director of Dogs Way Homes, and you're listening to the Oh Behave Show with Arden Moore on Pet Last Radio.
00:15:42.420 --> 00:15:43.780
Announcer: We're back from the lot.
00:15:43.780 --> 00:15:46.460
Announcer: Just check the paper and we had a record showing at the box.
00:15:46.880 --> 00:15:48.440
Announcer: The letter box that is.
00:15:48.440 --> 00:15:50.400
Announcer: Now back to Oh Behave.
00:15:50.400 --> 00:15:51.740
Announcer: Here's Arden.
00:15:51.740 --> 00:15:54.660
Arden Moore: Welcome back to the Oh Behave Show on Pet Life Radio.
00:15:54.660 --> 00:15:56.320
Arden Moore: I'm your host, Arden Moore.
00:15:56.320 --> 00:15:59.820
Arden Moore: I am saluting two incredible people from Dogtopia.
00:15:59.820 --> 00:16:01.200
Arden Moore: We have Jordan Cerrillo.
00:16:01.200 --> 00:16:04.720
Arden Moore: He is a regional manager in the Wisconsin area.
00:16:04.720 --> 00:16:14.280
Arden Moore: And as we mentioned, we have a retired command sergeant major, Gretchen Evans, who serves as the Dogtopia Foundation ambassador.
00:16:14.280 --> 00:16:23.680
Arden Moore: And you did this 101 miles with Gretchen coming in for the final 10, which you couldn't probably pick a better teammate than Gretchen, right?
00:16:23.680 --> 00:16:25.280
Jordan Cerrillo: Yes, absolutely.
00:16:25.280 --> 00:16:26.240
Jordan Cerrillo: Absolutely.
00:16:26.240 --> 00:16:29.220
Jordan Cerrillo: When I needed her most at those 90 miles, she was there.
00:16:29.220 --> 00:16:31.940
Jordan Cerrillo: She brought the energy and she helped bring it home.
00:16:31.940 --> 00:16:33.380
Arden Moore: Is there something you said to him?
00:16:33.380 --> 00:16:35.820
Arden Moore: And please don't use vulgarity, Sergeant.
00:16:36.020 --> 00:16:40.260
Gretchen Evans: No, you know, when I first got there, I was singing Arm in Cadence.
00:16:40.260 --> 00:16:43.860
Gretchen Evans: I started singing Arm in Cadence, which made him put a big smile on his face.
00:16:43.860 --> 00:16:48.620
Gretchen Evans: And then, you know, I was just, the one thing you want to do is take your mind off of what you're doing.
00:16:48.620 --> 00:16:55.700
Gretchen Evans: So I was just, you know, first of all, I wanted to say thank you because I know that my service dog saved and changed my life.
00:16:55.700 --> 00:17:04.380
Gretchen Evans: And what he was doing was so important to me and all my fellow veterans who are menacing from his great effort.
00:17:04.380 --> 00:17:08.660
Gretchen Evans: because service dogs certainly make a difference in a veteran's life.
00:17:08.660 --> 00:17:17.780
Gretchen Evans: They say that it reduces depression and anxiety and suicidal ideation by up to 80%, and which is unheard of.
00:17:17.780 --> 00:17:22.680
Gretchen Evans: But you know, these dogs are, become our best friends and our battle buddies.
00:17:22.680 --> 00:17:28.760
Gretchen Evans: And so I talked to Jordan and just told him how thankful I was for what he was doing, saying some cadence.
00:17:28.760 --> 00:17:29.780
Arden Moore: Okay, give us one.
00:17:29.980 --> 00:17:30.640
Gretchen Evans: Now you're ready?
00:17:30.640 --> 00:17:34.300
Gretchen Evans: Okay, so up in the morning for the break of day.
00:17:34.320 --> 00:17:36.240
Gretchen Evans: I don't like it.
00:17:36.240 --> 00:17:37.760
Gretchen Evans: No way.
00:17:37.760 --> 00:17:42.760
Gretchen Evans: Up in the morning for, oh, I went to the mess hall to get my food.
00:17:42.760 --> 00:17:46.460
Gretchen Evans: I said, mess sergeant, mess sergeant, big me please.
00:17:46.460 --> 00:17:52.720
Gretchen Evans: Mess sergeant said with a great big grin, if you're going to be airborne, you got to be thin.
00:17:52.720 --> 00:17:53.900
Arden Moore: I guess I'm not going to be airborne.
00:17:54.100 --> 00:17:56.280
Gretchen Evans: Okay.
00:17:56.280 --> 00:17:57.480
Arden Moore: Awesome, awesome.
00:17:57.480 --> 00:18:02.740
Arden Moore: We do want to dive in because you've got a couple of special four-leggers in your life, Gretchen.
00:18:02.740 --> 00:18:09.320
Arden Moore: You have Aura and Rusty, and it's up to you, but you serve combat in Afghanistan.
00:18:09.320 --> 00:18:19.940
Arden Moore: Folks, she's going to blush, but I'm telling you, we have a real American hero and leader here, and the fact that she was awarded the Bronze Star, that's a frigging big deal.
00:18:19.940 --> 00:18:30.100
Arden Moore: She's in the US Veteran Hall of Fame, and my favorite is she was awarded the prestigious Pat Tillman Award for Service and was at the SP.
00:18:30.100 --> 00:18:41.300
Arden Moore: So I hope you're not blushing too bad, but tell us a little bit about your situation and why the service dogs in your life have made you command life in a great way.
00:18:42.640 --> 00:18:56.500
Gretchen Evans: So Aura was my first service dog, and because I'm totally deaf from the blast in Afghanistan, I needed a hearing dog that could alert me to sounds, to give me back my independence.
00:18:56.500 --> 00:19:02.580
Gretchen Evans: Going from being a hearing person for 46 years to being totally deaf was devastating to me.
00:19:02.580 --> 00:19:12.980
Gretchen Evans: It ended my career through me into a life that I was unfamiliar with, not being able to hear and to communicate.
00:19:12.980 --> 00:19:22.000
Gretchen Evans: So Aura was trained by America's Vet Dogs, Dogtopia Foundation does raise funds for, she was the first hearing dog they ever trained.
00:19:22.000 --> 00:19:22.840
Arden Moore: Are you kidding?
00:19:22.840 --> 00:19:24.340
Arden Moore: What kind of breed is Aura?
00:19:24.360 --> 00:19:31.400
Gretchen Evans: Aura is a cross, a breed between a Labrador and a Golden Retriever, which is a perfect mix.
00:19:31.400 --> 00:19:36.980
Gretchen Evans: So Aura, when I got her, it was like all of a sudden I didn't feel like a deaf person anymore.
00:19:37.360 --> 00:19:41.760
Gretchen Evans: And I could navigate live because Aura would tell me when she heard a sound.
00:19:41.760 --> 00:19:50.640
Gretchen Evans: And the way she does that is she pokes me with her nose on my thigh when she hears a sound, the doorbell, the microwave, the dryer.
00:19:50.640 --> 00:19:53.940
Gretchen Evans: I'm not crazy about that one, but she still tells me when it's done.
00:19:53.940 --> 00:20:00.340
Gretchen Evans: And also she allows me to drive legally because she can alert me to emergency vehicles.
00:20:00.340 --> 00:20:05.300
Gretchen Evans: Whereas before I couldn't hear them, so I was not a safe driver and couldn't have a driver's license.
00:20:05.400 --> 00:20:08.760
Gretchen Evans: So you can imagine what it felt like to get my independence back.
00:20:08.760 --> 00:20:13.340
Gretchen Evans: But anyway, when she pokes me with her nose, then I look at her and I say, where's the sound?
00:20:13.340 --> 00:20:15.180
Gretchen Evans: And she takes me to the sound.
00:20:15.180 --> 00:20:19.160
Gretchen Evans: Two years ago, we retired, or she had worked for me for 10 years.
00:20:19.160 --> 00:20:22.440
Gretchen Evans: And I travel a lot doing speaking engagements.
00:20:22.440 --> 00:20:26.560
Gretchen Evans: And like I said, I have an adaptive athletic team and we do all kinds of crazy things.
00:20:26.560 --> 00:20:29.880
Gretchen Evans: In fact, in two weeks, we're going to go summit Kilimanjaro.
00:20:29.880 --> 00:20:30.380
Arden Moore: Really?
00:20:30.400 --> 00:20:33.940
Arden Moore: I was just going to maybe go to a movie in two weeks, but wow.
00:20:35.500 --> 00:20:37.120
Gretchen Evans: Well, that's all good too.
00:20:37.120 --> 00:20:47.120
Gretchen Evans: But I asked America's Pet Dogs if they would find another and train another hearing dog for me because so I could let or retire.
00:20:47.120 --> 00:20:54.460
Gretchen Evans: And so they trained Rusty, who's a purebred Labrador, who's the size of a small pony, really tall.
00:20:54.460 --> 00:20:59.740
Gretchen Evans: And so now Rusty travels with me and does lots of activities with me.
00:20:59.880 --> 00:21:04.780
Gretchen Evans: I've taken Rusty wetwater rafting and zip lining and he paddled with me.
00:21:04.780 --> 00:21:05.480
Gretchen Evans: Wow.
00:21:05.480 --> 00:21:08.500
Arden Moore: I heard he's kind of a go for it, goofball a little bit too.
00:21:08.500 --> 00:21:10.160
Gretchen Evans: He's a go for it kind of dog.
00:21:10.160 --> 00:21:20.340
Gretchen Evans: And so both of these dogs got me out of that dark place when I first was injured and was trying to recover and find my new passion and purpose.
00:21:20.340 --> 00:21:27.080
Gretchen Evans: And I knew that these dogs could do that for me, that there was other veterans out there that needed the same thing that I did.
00:21:27.600 --> 00:21:32.960
Gretchen Evans: So when the dog, when I found the Dogtopia Foundation or they found me, I said that what can I do to help?
00:21:32.960 --> 00:21:47.520
Gretchen Evans: And they said, you can tell your story and help get the word out that these dogs are available free of cause to veterans and they can help them and navigate their new life post-military.
00:21:47.860 --> 00:21:54.020
Arden Moore: Well said and I do salute you for your military service and I am a big fan of the service dogs.
00:21:54.020 --> 00:21:58.420
Arden Moore: I've done work with canine companions when I lived in Oceanside, California.
00:21:58.420 --> 00:22:01.740
Arden Moore: Now I'm in Dallas and we're working together on some things.
00:22:01.740 --> 00:22:08.760
Arden Moore: And this brings us back to Jordan Cerrillo because Jordan, I was doing some research on the Dogtopia Foundation.
00:22:08.760 --> 00:22:22.060
Arden Moore: I hope these stats are correct, but your nonprofit arm of Dogtopia, I guess have raised over $3 million and have paired up about 370 teams of service dogs to veterans, correct?
00:22:22.520 --> 00:22:28.200
Gretchen Evans: And learn about Jordan is as a young man that he took action.
00:22:28.200 --> 00:22:34.660
Gretchen Evans: Lots of people, you know, hearing things that touch their hearts and they think, oh, I would really like to do something about that.
00:22:34.660 --> 00:22:40.540
Gretchen Evans: And then, you know, in the next 24, 40 hours life takes over and they forget about it.
00:22:40.560 --> 00:22:44.120
Gretchen Evans: Or, you know, they don't have time where they don't make time.
00:22:44.120 --> 00:22:51.480
Gretchen Evans: And Jordan, you know, made a promise to himself and to others that he was going to do something about this and he did it.
00:22:51.620 --> 00:22:52.400
Gretchen Evans: And it was hard.
00:22:52.400 --> 00:22:55.440
Gretchen Evans: I know how hard running a hundred miles is.
00:22:55.440 --> 00:22:59.400
Gretchen Evans: And he's still as enthusiastic after the run.
00:22:59.400 --> 00:23:01.280
Gretchen Evans: You know, some people say, you know, it's like childbirth.
00:23:01.280 --> 00:23:02.760
Gretchen Evans: I'm never doing that again.
00:23:03.120 --> 00:23:06.820
Gretchen Evans: And then, you know, the dude got that.
00:23:06.820 --> 00:23:09.480
Gretchen Evans: But lots of people are one and done kind of people.
00:23:09.480 --> 00:23:20.120
Gretchen Evans: But I think what it really did is that I saw it fuel the fire of his passion by saying, I call it the say do ratio, saying you're going to do something and actually doing it.
00:23:20.440 --> 00:23:29.740
Gretchen Evans: That's where the courage comes in and is actually showing up to the start line in front of people publicly and say, I'm going to do this, not knowing what the X factor could be out there.
00:23:29.740 --> 00:23:33.660
Gretchen Evans: He could have had rainstorms, he could have had all kinds of things go wrong.
00:23:33.660 --> 00:23:37.820
Gretchen Evans: And so I always say the courage is saying that you're going to do it and then showing up to do it.
00:23:37.820 --> 00:23:41.860
Gretchen Evans: That shows a lot of grit, engumption, and resilience.
00:23:41.860 --> 00:23:48.220
Gretchen Evans: And it shows that he does care about the greater good out there, that he is not what I call a self-licking ice cream cone.
00:23:48.300 --> 00:23:50.480
Gretchen Evans: It's not about Jordan, OK?
00:23:50.480 --> 00:23:51.640
Gretchen Evans: It's about others.
00:23:51.640 --> 00:23:58.200
Gretchen Evans: And so he certainly is in my troop and he's on my rope team and I'm proud of having him there.
00:23:58.200 --> 00:24:06.440
Arden Moore: So Gretchen, he wasn't in your troop, but he is, because he's in a troop to help service members have service dogs.
00:24:06.440 --> 00:24:13.360
Arden Moore: What is something about Jordan that you admired when you saw him get it out on this 101 mile run?
00:24:13.760 --> 00:24:19.560
Gretchen Evans: And learn about Jordan as a young man that he took action.
00:24:19.560 --> 00:24:26.100
Gretchen Evans: Lots of people, hearing things that touch their hearts and they think, oh, I would really like to do something about that.
00:24:26.100 --> 00:24:33.280
Gretchen Evans: And then in the next 24, 40 hours, life takes over and they forget about it.
00:24:33.280 --> 00:24:37.700
Gretchen Evans: Or they don't have time or they don't make time.
00:24:37.700 --> 00:24:45.760
Gretchen Evans: And Jordan made a promise to himself and to others that he was going to do something about this and he did it and it was hard.
00:24:45.760 --> 00:24:54.340
Gretchen Evans: I know how hard running 100 miles is and he's still as enthusiastic after the run, some people say it's like childbirth.
00:24:54.340 --> 00:24:56.460
Gretchen Evans: I'm never doing that again.
00:24:56.460 --> 00:24:56.800
Gretchen Evans: And then-
00:24:56.800 --> 00:24:59.000
Arden Moore: Well, Jordan doesn't have to worry about childbirth.
00:25:01.480 --> 00:25:04.140
Gretchen Evans: But lots of people are one and done kind of people.
00:25:04.140 --> 00:25:15.400
Gretchen Evans: But I think what it really did is that I saw it fuel the fire of his passion by saying, I call it the say do ratio, saying you're going to do something and actually doing it.
00:25:15.400 --> 00:25:25.000
Gretchen Evans: That's where the courage comes in and is actually showing up to the start line in front of people publicly and say, I'm going to do this not knowing what the X factor could be out there.
00:25:25.000 --> 00:25:29.360
Gretchen Evans: He could have had rainstorms, he could have had all kinds of things go wrong.
00:25:29.360 --> 00:25:33.660
Gretchen Evans: I always say the courage is saying that you're going to do it and then showing up to do it.
00:25:35.120 --> 00:25:39.320
Gretchen Evans: That shows a lot of grit, indumption and resilience.
00:25:39.320 --> 00:25:45.580
Gretchen Evans: It shows that he does care about the greater good out there, that he is not what I call a self-licking ice cream cone.
00:25:45.580 --> 00:25:49.400
Gretchen Evans: It's not about Jordan, it's about others.
00:25:49.400 --> 00:25:54.540
Gretchen Evans: He certainly is in my troop and he's on my rope team, and I'm proud of having there.
00:25:54.860 --> 00:25:55.340
Arden Moore: What do you think?
00:25:55.340 --> 00:25:57.180
Arden Moore: Are you blushing, Jordan?
00:25:57.180 --> 00:25:57.920
Jordan Cerrillo: It means a lot.
00:25:57.920 --> 00:25:59.720
Jordan Cerrillo: It does.
00:25:59.720 --> 00:26:04.360
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah, I really do care about just the impact that it makes.
00:26:04.720 --> 00:26:05.660
Jordan Cerrillo: No, that means a lot.
00:26:05.660 --> 00:26:06.480
Jordan Cerrillo: Thank you.
00:26:06.480 --> 00:26:08.260
Arden Moore: Say do ratio, everyone.
00:26:08.260 --> 00:26:11.840
Arden Moore: That is the message of the day for sure.
00:26:11.840 --> 00:26:14.700
Arden Moore: How can people, can they still make donations?
00:26:14.700 --> 00:26:16.140
Arden Moore: Jordan, what can we do to help?
00:26:16.140 --> 00:26:21.400
Arden Moore: because we're having you say it on this show and we want people to do something.
00:26:21.860 --> 00:26:22.940
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah.
00:26:22.940 --> 00:26:29.020
Jordan Cerrillo: To be honest, it doesn't have to be just towards my donation campaign.
00:26:29.020 --> 00:26:40.700
Jordan Cerrillo: You can find it on the Dogtopia of Woodbury, Facebook and Instagram or the Dogtopia of eau Claire, Facebook or Instagram where we have a link for my specific fundraising.
00:26:40.700 --> 00:26:55.940
Jordan Cerrillo: But honestly, if you're just interested in learning more about Dogtopia Foundation and donating to the nationwide cause, you can just go on the dogtopiafoundation.org and that's where you're able to donate as well.
00:26:55.940 --> 00:27:03.080
Arden Moore: Now, we can't end this show without saying something about what Gretchen did before and after.
00:27:03.080 --> 00:27:11.360
Arden Moore: So you help him with the final 10 miles and we're going to have you do one more army chant before we let you go.
00:27:11.360 --> 00:27:14.960
Arden Moore: But what did you do before and what did you do after?
00:27:15.440 --> 00:27:16.920
Gretchen Evans: So, oh, so after.
00:27:16.920 --> 00:27:19.440
Arden Moore: Before and after, didn't you do something before too?
00:27:19.440 --> 00:27:25.160
Arden Moore: Didn't you run something beforehand and then met him and then did the Appalachian?
00:27:25.160 --> 00:27:25.620
Gretchen Evans: Well, yes.
00:27:25.620 --> 00:27:40.320
Gretchen Evans: So after I left Jordan, I flew to Asheville, North Carolina and hopped on the Appalachian Trail with 12 mixed ability veterans as part of the organization that helps people recalibrate.
00:27:40.320 --> 00:27:48.600
Gretchen Evans: And so, you know, I traded my running shoes and for my hiking boots and had a beautiful height in North Carolina on the Appalachian Trail.
00:27:48.600 --> 00:27:49.900
Gretchen Evans: And that was such an incredible.
00:27:49.900 --> 00:27:51.180
Arden Moore: For how many days?
00:27:51.180 --> 00:27:51.820
Arden Moore: Five.
00:27:51.820 --> 00:27:54.520
Arden Moore: So you didn't sit on the couch after you helped Jordan.
00:27:54.520 --> 00:27:57.640
Arden Moore: You got your butt off the couch and on the trail, right?
00:27:57.640 --> 00:27:58.160
Gretchen Evans: That's right.
00:27:58.160 --> 00:27:58.600
Gretchen Evans: Yes, ma'am.
00:27:58.600 --> 00:27:59.260
Gretchen Evans: I did.
00:27:59.260 --> 00:28:01.920
Arden Moore: Come on, give us another army page.
00:28:01.920 --> 00:28:02.620
Arden Moore: Come on.
00:28:02.620 --> 00:28:03.360
Arden Moore: This is fun.
00:28:03.360 --> 00:28:03.900
Arden Moore: This is fun.
00:28:03.900 --> 00:28:05.580
Gretchen Evans: OK, let's see.
00:28:05.580 --> 00:28:11.380
Gretchen Evans: When my granny was 96, she did PT just for kicks.
00:28:12.000 --> 00:28:18.140
Gretchen Evans: When my granny was 97, she ran all the way to heaven.
00:28:18.140 --> 00:28:24.600
Gretchen Evans: When my granny was 98, she said drop down and give me eight.
00:28:24.600 --> 00:28:30.500
Gretchen Evans: When my granny was 99, she ran PT just for fun.
00:28:30.500 --> 00:28:31.260
Arden Moore: Nice.
00:28:31.260 --> 00:28:32.380
Arden Moore: Hey, everybody.
00:28:32.380 --> 00:28:36.220
Arden Moore: We have been so honored to have on our show two superheroes.
00:28:36.220 --> 00:28:39.100
Arden Moore: I'm going to call them Jordan Cerrillo and Gretchen Evans.
00:28:39.640 --> 00:28:41.500
Arden Moore: They represent Dogtopia.
00:28:41.500 --> 00:28:44.720
Arden Moore: Go to dogtopia.com, check out dogtopiafoundation.org.
00:28:45.980 --> 00:28:49.900
Arden Moore: See all the great works that they're doing.
00:28:49.900 --> 00:28:51.040
Arden Moore: Personally, I love them.
00:28:51.040 --> 00:28:53.940
Arden Moore: I'm a master certified pet first aid instructor.
00:28:53.940 --> 00:28:56.820
Arden Moore: Been doing that since 2011.
00:28:56.820 --> 00:29:00.780
Arden Moore: Many of the people I've trained are people from Dogtopia.
00:29:00.780 --> 00:29:13.580
Arden Moore: My feeling is this, Jordan, if you're going to take care of my most priceless asset, not my car, not my house, my dog, you better know what to do and what not to do when minutes count in a pet first aid emergency.
00:29:13.580 --> 00:29:22.780
Arden Moore: So personally and professionally, I salute your organization for recognizing the need to have them certified in pet first aid.
00:29:22.780 --> 00:29:28.520
Arden Moore: And I don't care if it's my program or someone else, that's a big deal for pet parents.
00:29:28.520 --> 00:29:29.540
Jordan Cerrillo: Absolutely.
00:29:29.540 --> 00:29:29.960
Jordan Cerrillo: Absolutely.
00:29:29.960 --> 00:29:30.800
Jordan Cerrillo: It's a big deal for me.
00:29:30.820 --> 00:29:32.000
Jordan Cerrillo: I own three as well.
00:29:32.000 --> 00:29:33.440
Jordan Cerrillo: So it's a big deal for me too.
00:29:33.440 --> 00:29:35.440
Arden Moore: Well, we heard your name of your fiance.
00:29:35.840 --> 00:29:38.820
Arden Moore: I have some dog ears, I feel that are perking up in the background.
00:29:38.820 --> 00:29:40.600
Arden Moore: You better salute your three.
00:29:40.600 --> 00:29:40.960
Jordan Cerrillo: Yeah.
00:29:40.960 --> 00:29:43.920
Jordan Cerrillo: So I have Harper, who is an Australian cattle dog.
00:29:43.920 --> 00:29:46.480
Jordan Cerrillo: I have Wally, who's an Australian shepherd.
00:29:46.480 --> 00:29:48.960
Jordan Cerrillo: And then I have Indy, who is a mini Aussie doodle.
00:29:48.960 --> 00:29:50.960
Jordan Cerrillo: So a lot of Aussies in the house.
00:29:50.960 --> 00:29:51.520
Arden Moore: Oh yeah.
00:29:51.520 --> 00:29:52.500
Arden Moore: A lot of brain power.
00:29:52.500 --> 00:29:52.900
Arden Moore: All right.
00:29:52.900 --> 00:29:53.200
Arden Moore: Yeah.
00:29:53.200 --> 00:29:55.460
Arden Moore: What's your parting message, Jordan?
00:29:55.460 --> 00:30:02.580
Jordan Cerrillo: I guess my parting message would be, this is not the end of just some of the things I'd like to do towards the foundation.
00:30:02.580 --> 00:30:04.000
Jordan Cerrillo: I hope this is only the beginning.
00:30:05.760 --> 00:30:13.320
Jordan Cerrillo: And whether it is a dog in your life, a veteran in your life, hold them close, hold them tight, be thankful for them.
00:30:13.320 --> 00:30:21.120
Jordan Cerrillo: And also hopefully you guys can find a, if it's not the Dogtopia Foundation, something to back that is equally as impactful.
00:30:21.120 --> 00:30:24.900
Jordan Cerrillo: because I promise you, it makes you feel so full inside.
00:30:24.900 --> 00:30:28.600
Jordan Cerrillo: Just seeing the benefits that it provides.
00:30:28.600 --> 00:30:29.760
Arden Moore: I love that.
00:30:29.760 --> 00:30:36.220
Arden Moore: And retired commander, sergeant, major Gretchen Evans, what's your parting message?
00:30:36.220 --> 00:30:39.540
Gretchen Evans: My parting message is, is that if you can help, you should.
00:30:39.540 --> 00:30:44.500
Gretchen Evans: It's great to believe in people and it always feels better to get them than to receive.
00:30:44.500 --> 00:30:55.920
Gretchen Evans: And one little alibi I'll fill in there just because I'm modacious, is that, you know, I'm a motivational speaker and I talk about teamwork and leadership and grit and gumption.
00:30:55.920 --> 00:31:03.520
Gretchen Evans: And anybody, company that would like to have me come out and give a keynote, I will donate that speaker fees to the Dogtopia Foundation.
00:31:03.520 --> 00:31:04.520
Arden Moore: You heard it here.
00:31:04.520 --> 00:31:05.440
Arden Moore: That's a big woof.
00:31:05.440 --> 00:31:06.380
Arden Moore: I love it.
00:31:06.380 --> 00:31:09.140
Arden Moore: Hey, again, everybody, thank you for tuning in.
00:31:09.140 --> 00:31:14.780
Arden Moore: By the way, our show Oh Behave is the longest running weekly pet podcast on the planet.
00:31:14.780 --> 00:31:18.480
