00:01:01.440 --> 00:01:05.020

Arden Moore: We'll be right back.
00:01:20.280 --> 00:01:21.460
Announcer: Time for a pause.
00:01:22.200 --> 00:01:25.500
Announcer: For furry ones, actually, sit and stay.
00:01:25.500 --> 00:01:27.780
Announcer: Oh Behave will be right back.
00:01:31.160 --> 00:01:35.640
Announcer: Pet Greens is proud to support Oh Behave on Pet Life Radio.
00:01:35.640 --> 00:01:44.920
Announcer: Our small family farm produces live organic cat grass, catnip and soft chew treats packed with green nutrition to help your pets truly thrive inside.
00:01:44.920 --> 00:01:56.540
Announcer: We're partnering with pioneer cat behavior expert and best selling author, Pam Johnson-Bennett, to help indoor cats live their best lives with indoor enrichment tips for their parents.
00:01:56.540 --> 00:02:02.080
Pam Johnson-Bennett: >Anyone who knows me knows I am a very strong proponent for cats being indoors.
00:02:02.080 --> 00:02:10.960
Pam Johnson-Bennett: >But when we bring cats indoors where I feel it's safest, we have an obligation to make sure they have a fulfilling life, that they get enrichment.
00:02:10.960 --> 00:02:14.540
Pam Johnson-Bennett: >And part of that enrichment is encouraging health.
00:02:14.540 --> 00:02:17.000
Pam Johnson-Bennett: >And a big part of that health is cat grass.
00:02:17.280 --> 00:02:20.260
Pam Johnson-Bennett: >Cat grass helps with the prevention of hair balls.
00:02:20.260 --> 00:02:23.260
Pam Johnson-Bennett: >It can help keep your cat away from house plants.
00:02:23.260 --> 00:02:25.520
Pam Johnson-Bennett: >It's also fun for your cat.
00:02:25.520 --> 00:02:28.860
Pam Johnson-Bennett: >It's a natural behavior that your cat wants to chew.
00:02:28.860 --> 00:02:31.860
Pam Johnson-Bennett: >And you know that you're providing it in a safe way.
00:02:31.860 --> 00:02:38.280

00:02:59.220 --> 00:03:02.000
Arden Moore: Welcome back to the Oh Behave Show on PetLife Radio.
00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:03.700
Arden Moore: I'm your host, Arden Moore.
00:03:03.700 --> 00:03:09.740
Arden Moore: Please give pause and applause to the very talented Scott Metzger.
00:03:09.740 --> 00:03:11.700
Arden Moore: Welcome, welcome to our show, Scott.
00:03:11.700 --> 00:03:14.240
Scott Metzger: Well, thank you so much for that nice introduction.
00:03:14.360 --> 00:03:16.220
Scott Metzger: Yeah, it's happening to be here.
00:03:16.220 --> 00:03:22.920
Arden Moore: All of us agree that life with our cats, dogs and other critters are anything but boring.
00:03:22.940 --> 00:03:33.340
Arden Moore: And folks, for nearly 30 years, Scott has been depicting our interactions with our pets in a comical and very candid way.
00:03:33.340 --> 00:03:34.840
Arden Moore: And I have to fess up.
00:03:34.840 --> 00:03:39.180
Arden Moore: I'm not trying to be a fan, fan.
00:03:39.180 --> 00:03:50.880
Arden Moore: But I got to say, there are times that I open my phone and out pops a Scott Metzger cartoon, and it just makes me smile for the rest of the day.
00:03:50.880 --> 00:03:54.140
Arden Moore: You've got feline funnies, canine comedy.
00:03:54.140 --> 00:03:55.060
Arden Moore: You got it all.
00:03:55.060 --> 00:03:58.200
Arden Moore: And I know people are very curious too.
00:03:58.200 --> 00:03:59.900
Arden Moore: How did you even become a cartoonist?
00:03:59.900 --> 00:04:02.440
Arden Moore: Because you went to UC Davis, right?
00:04:02.440 --> 00:04:03.440
Arden Moore: University of California.
00:04:04.040 --> 00:04:06.220
Arden Moore: That's a brilliant, brilliant school.
00:04:06.220 --> 00:04:09.860
Arden Moore: And were you trying to be a brain surgeon?
00:04:11.000 --> 00:04:12.480
Arden Moore: MIT geek?
00:04:12.800 --> 00:04:14.220
Arden Moore: What were you hoping to do?
00:04:14.220 --> 00:04:17.560
Arden Moore: And what happened when you got that diploma in your hand?
00:04:17.560 --> 00:04:18.800
Scott Metzger: Not trying to be a brain surgeon.
00:04:18.800 --> 00:04:21.620
Scott Metzger: Not trying to be a veterinarian, which is another thing they're known for.
00:04:21.620 --> 00:04:22.440
Arden Moore: Yeah, that's true.
00:04:22.440 --> 00:04:23.120
Arden Moore: That's true.
00:04:23.120 --> 00:04:23.300
Scott Metzger: Yeah.
00:04:23.300 --> 00:04:24.180
Scott Metzger: I went to UC Davis.
00:04:24.180 --> 00:04:27.200
Scott Metzger: I took, I started off as an art major actually there.
00:04:27.200 --> 00:04:29.460
Scott Metzger: And then I took a bunch of art classes.
00:04:29.460 --> 00:04:33.700
Scott Metzger: And so I ended up transitioning to doing communications.
00:04:33.700 --> 00:04:34.700
Scott Metzger: And I had-
00:04:34.700 --> 00:04:36.220
Arden Moore: Is that what your major is in?
00:04:36.220 --> 00:04:36.740
Scott Metzger: Yes.
00:04:36.740 --> 00:04:40.600
Scott Metzger: And I basically have, I'm like, essentially have an art minor.
00:04:40.600 --> 00:04:41.880
Scott Metzger: I just, I'm a few units short.
00:04:41.880 --> 00:04:43.980
Scott Metzger: I was a few units short of that.
00:04:43.980 --> 00:04:48.540
Scott Metzger: But like, but yeah, the art classes weren't really doing it for me.
00:04:48.980 --> 00:04:49.520
Scott Metzger: I learned a lot.
00:04:49.520 --> 00:04:50.640
Arden Moore: You're no Picasso.
00:04:50.640 --> 00:04:51.900
Arden Moore: I mean, Renoir.
00:04:51.900 --> 00:04:52.380
Arden Moore: You weren't-
00:04:52.380 --> 00:04:53.420
Arden Moore: Were you a doodler?
00:04:53.420 --> 00:04:54.360
Arden Moore: Are you a doodler?
00:04:54.360 --> 00:04:58.500
Arden Moore: I mean, when you are taking notes in class, are you making little drawings?
00:04:58.500 --> 00:05:03.440
Scott Metzger: You know, sometimes, yeah, I was always drawing and I was never like-
00:05:03.460 --> 00:05:05.960
Scott Metzger: Usually when I was growing up in school, I was paying attention.
00:05:05.960 --> 00:05:07.260
Scott Metzger: I would sometimes doodle a little bit.
00:05:07.380 --> 00:05:11.600
Scott Metzger: But yeah, I was always drawing as a kid and I always loved that.
00:05:11.600 --> 00:05:17.500
Scott Metzger: But I actually didn't start drawing, really focusing on cartooning until after I graduated from college.
00:05:18.380 --> 00:05:18.760
Scott Metzger: Yeah.
00:05:18.760 --> 00:05:28.480
Scott Metzger: I mean, I was drawing, definitely drawing cartoons and doing things and doing all various art related things throughout high school and took our classes in high school and then through college.
00:05:28.480 --> 00:05:31.100
Scott Metzger: But I wasn't really focusing on a comic ship.
00:05:31.100 --> 00:05:34.620
Scott Metzger: Some people get their comics published in college newspapers.
00:05:34.620 --> 00:05:35.640
Scott Metzger: I didn't do that.
00:05:35.640 --> 00:05:41.000
Scott Metzger: When I was in college, the Internet was just starting and so it was ending up it.
00:05:41.260 --> 00:05:42.500
Scott Metzger: That makes me feel real old.
00:05:42.500 --> 00:05:43.160
Arden Moore: Oh, don't worry.
00:05:43.160 --> 00:05:44.120
Arden Moore: I got to tap.
00:05:44.120 --> 00:05:45.120
Scott Metzger: But yeah.
00:05:45.120 --> 00:05:48.880
Scott Metzger: After I graduated, I had this goal of becoming a syndicated cartoonist.
00:05:48.880 --> 00:05:49.900
Scott Metzger: That was my goal.
00:05:50.460 --> 00:05:55.380
Scott Metzger: I want to be, do what Jim Davis and Charles Shultz.
00:05:55.380 --> 00:05:59.380
Scott Metzger: Those are my heroes and Berkeley Brethead and all these other people like I want to do that.
00:05:59.380 --> 00:06:06.940
Scott Metzger: I spent a good probably 15 years after college off and on submitting packages to syndicates.
00:06:06.940 --> 00:06:08.700
Scott Metzger: Yeah, so it didn't pan out.
00:06:08.700 --> 00:06:11.900
Scott Metzger: Long story short, I got kind of close with one strip.
00:06:11.900 --> 00:06:15.300
Scott Metzger: Editors liked it, but it was a little too weird for syndication.
00:06:15.300 --> 00:06:19.500
Arden Moore: I love that you're following your passion, but you've got to pay the utility bills.
00:06:19.500 --> 00:06:23.520
Arden Moore: How were you doing that after you had your diploma in hand?
00:06:23.660 --> 00:06:25.480
Scott Metzger: Yeah, I worked various jobs.
00:06:26.620 --> 00:06:28.520
Scott Metzger: I worked at a direct mail agency.
00:06:28.520 --> 00:06:33.160
Scott Metzger: I was doing a little bit of copywriting, some art production for a direct mail agency.
00:06:33.160 --> 00:06:38.020
Scott Metzger: I worked there for a few years, then I transitioned to another non-profit.
00:06:38.020 --> 00:06:46.560
Scott Metzger: The direct mail agency was a for-profit, but I moved to the non-profit world and made money doing day jobs there, and so yeah, doing work there.
00:06:46.560 --> 00:06:56.000
Arden Moore: Well, I guess what I'm saying is help people out because there's people that know you think to be syndicated is great, but we live in the time of the Internet and everything's changing.
00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:09.040
Arden Moore: So you're able to get your cartoons out there on social media platforms, and I'm hoping that's a good thing because everybody, your big homework after the show is to go to your website.
00:07:09.040 --> 00:07:12.940
Arden Moore: Is it, tell everybody metzgercartoons.com, is that correct?
00:07:13.020 --> 00:07:14.540
Scott Metzger: metzgercartoons.com.
00:07:14.540 --> 00:07:22.480
Scott Metzger: And yeah, my Facebook handle is at Scott Metzger Cartoons and same with Instagram, at Scott Metzger Cartoons and on threads too.
00:07:22.540 --> 00:07:23.640
Scott Metzger: People are all threads.
00:07:23.640 --> 00:07:24.880
Scott Metzger: Yeah, are you on threads?
00:07:24.880 --> 00:07:25.640
Arden Moore: No, not yet.
00:07:25.640 --> 00:07:28.940
Arden Moore: I have some clothing that need more threads, but no.
00:07:28.940 --> 00:07:30.180
Arden Moore: Tell people about that.
00:07:30.180 --> 00:07:33.440
Arden Moore: You're not syndicated, but people know you in the pet world.
00:07:33.440 --> 00:07:41.520
Arden Moore: And I have a lot of friends that love your cartoons and I see them sometimes popping up on a PowerPoint display or something.
00:07:41.620 --> 00:07:53.260
Arden Moore: And the one thing as a writer and an author to you as a cartoonist, it's very nice and very important that they have your name on that cartoon when they show it.
00:07:53.260 --> 00:07:55.000
Scott Metzger: Yes, that's huge.
00:07:55.000 --> 00:08:02.920
Scott Metzger: And yeah, and that's actually part of what I do is with my cartoons, I license them for presentations and newsletters and social media things.
00:08:03.200 --> 00:08:10.080
Scott Metzger: I work with a bunch of social media pages that pay a certain fee to post my work if they're a business page.
00:08:10.380 --> 00:08:14.780
Scott Metzger: And so yeah, it's just I started posting my stuff on Facebook.
00:08:14.780 --> 00:08:20.140
Scott Metzger: Well, I started the Facebook page like in 2014 and Instagram 2015.
00:08:20.140 --> 00:08:23.060
Scott Metzger: So it's just consistency and just putting up content regularly.
00:08:23.060 --> 00:08:30.640
Scott Metzger: And I was lucky enough to get early on a couple cat pages that were pretty popular, that had like hundreds of thousands of followers were sharing my stuff.
00:08:30.640 --> 00:08:32.780
Scott Metzger: And that's how it helped build my page.
00:08:32.780 --> 00:08:39.360
Arden Moore: I think if my notes are right, you have something like over 273,000 followers on Facebook alone.
00:08:39.940 --> 00:08:42.060
Arden Moore: And they're not all your relatives, right, Scott?
00:08:42.060 --> 00:08:44.460
Scott Metzger: Yeah, over 200,000 are.
00:08:44.460 --> 00:08:45.020
Arden Moore: Wow.
00:08:45.020 --> 00:08:45.300
Scott Metzger: Yeah.
00:08:45.300 --> 00:08:48.520
Scott Metzger: So yeah, I've been fortunate that it's connected with some people.
00:08:48.520 --> 00:08:56.920
Scott Metzger: It's like, actually for a long time, I was drawing cartoons about all kinds of topics and I wasn't drawing that many cat or dog cartoons.
00:08:56.920 --> 00:09:00.020
Scott Metzger: And then one day I started to kind of focus on that.
00:09:00.020 --> 00:09:03.520
Scott Metzger: Actually, an old friend of mine said, you should really focus on cat cartoons.
00:09:03.520 --> 00:09:06.440
Scott Metzger: It's like probably 2013 or something, 2014.
00:09:06.620 --> 00:09:07.560
Scott Metzger: And I said, I don't know.
00:09:08.180 --> 00:09:09.040
Scott Metzger: I'm not sure.
00:09:09.040 --> 00:09:10.640
Scott Metzger: I like them, but I'm not sure if they're going to connect.
00:09:10.640 --> 00:09:14.540
Scott Metzger: I didn't realize how many people online are huge cat people.
00:09:14.700 --> 00:09:19.160
Scott Metzger: And so it's nice that I have that thing where I can draw, what I really enjoy.
00:09:19.160 --> 00:09:21.640
Scott Metzger: And it also, there's an audience for that.
00:09:21.640 --> 00:09:25.420
Arden Moore: So and well, you have a couple of feline muses.
00:09:25.420 --> 00:09:27.540
Arden Moore: I know they're listening to the show.
00:09:27.540 --> 00:09:34.040
Arden Moore: So could you give everybody a quick 411 on the two cats and the dog you have that maybe inspire you a bit?
00:09:34.040 --> 00:09:34.440
Scott Metzger: Yeah.
00:09:34.440 --> 00:09:36.940
Scott Metzger: And one of them was just wandering around right near here.
00:09:38.680 --> 00:09:39.880
Arden Moore: But that's a cat, right?
00:09:39.880 --> 00:09:41.460
Arden Moore: That's a cat, so I'll see you.
00:09:41.960 --> 00:09:43.280
Scott Metzger: I've got a dog.
00:09:43.300 --> 00:09:44.420
Scott Metzger: I've got two cats and a dog.
00:09:44.420 --> 00:09:46.180
Scott Metzger: So I have a cat named Max.
00:09:46.180 --> 00:09:47.140
Scott Metzger: He's a tuxedo cat.
00:09:47.140 --> 00:09:49.220
Scott Metzger: He's about almost 14.
00:09:49.220 --> 00:09:54.020
Scott Metzger: And I have another cat named Piper who's about almost a year old and she's all black.
00:09:54.020 --> 00:09:54.900
Scott Metzger: They're both rescues.
00:09:54.900 --> 00:10:00.680
Scott Metzger: And then I have a rescue dog named Dobby, named after the house elf in Harry Potter because he kind of looks like that.
00:10:00.680 --> 00:10:04.000
Scott Metzger: He looks like a black lab, like shrunk in the dryer.
00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:06.340
Scott Metzger: He's basically kind of, he's actually in the other room.
00:10:06.380 --> 00:10:09.460
Scott Metzger: Because if you were out here, you'd be wanting to like jiggle the door to get out.
00:10:09.460 --> 00:10:10.420
Arden Moore: So yeah, yeah.
00:10:10.420 --> 00:10:13.680
Arden Moore: I mean, so you have a cat that's one year old.
00:10:13.680 --> 00:10:20.200
Arden Moore: I always say the first year with the cat, the kitten years, it's called the wonder year because you wonder where your sanity is gone.
00:10:20.200 --> 00:10:22.000
Arden Moore: How has life been with Piper?
00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:23.960
Scott Metzger: Oh boy, it's been interesting.
00:10:23.960 --> 00:10:25.620
Scott Metzger: I mean, she's a sweet little cat.
00:10:25.620 --> 00:10:26.420
Scott Metzger: She likes to snuggle.
00:10:26.420 --> 00:10:30.780
Scott Metzger: But boy, those first few months were like, do we make the wrong decision getting it?
00:10:30.780 --> 00:10:32.180
Scott Metzger: Just attacking things.
00:10:32.280 --> 00:10:33.920
Scott Metzger: And she still attacks plants.
00:10:33.920 --> 00:10:43.720
Scott Metzger: My wife is a huge, she loves house plants and she had to move a bunch of house plants or replace them with fake ones because she just attack things, knock things over and she still does that.
00:10:43.720 --> 00:10:46.040
Scott Metzger: So, but she's mellowed out a little bit.
00:10:46.040 --> 00:10:50.140
Scott Metzger: You know, now that she's a year old, she's a little bit, you know, slightly mellower.
00:10:50.140 --> 00:10:52.780
Scott Metzger: But yeah, she's like that a hundred years.
00:10:52.780 --> 00:10:53.920
Arden Moore: That's an Arden original.
00:10:53.920 --> 00:10:55.400
Arden Moore: You can take it if you want.
00:10:55.400 --> 00:11:00.520
Arden Moore: There's one you sent us and set us up and the person says, Something went wrong.
00:11:00.780 --> 00:11:05.700
Arden Moore: I meant to summon a demon and a cat replies.
00:11:05.700 --> 00:11:06.140
Arden Moore: What?
00:11:06.140 --> 00:11:08.700
Scott Metzger: Wait till you see me at 3 a.m.
00:11:08.700 --> 00:11:11.580
Scott Metzger: That's definitely absolutely based on Piper.
00:11:11.580 --> 00:11:12.320
Arden Moore: Okay.
00:11:12.520 --> 00:11:14.560
Scott Metzger: And that's that cat cow looks like Piper.
00:11:14.560 --> 00:11:16.740
Scott Metzger: Piper, I think the cat in the cartoon is dark gray.
00:11:16.740 --> 00:11:20.120
Scott Metzger: But yeah, but yeah, it's like it was easier visually that way.
00:11:20.120 --> 00:11:23.360
Scott Metzger: But yeah, that's inspired by Piper's antics.
00:11:23.360 --> 00:11:23.660
Arden Moore: All right.
00:11:23.660 --> 00:11:26.580
Arden Moore: Now there's one that we're all on Zoom these days.
00:11:26.740 --> 00:11:30.560
Arden Moore: I mean, don't you wish you would have bought Stock and Zoom in the fall of 19?
00:11:30.560 --> 00:11:32.120
Arden Moore: We'd be zillionaires.
00:11:32.120 --> 00:11:34.640
Arden Moore: But I'm going to tee you up for this one.
00:11:34.640 --> 00:11:38.860
Arden Moore: It's a bunch of dogs on a screen like the Brady Bunch, a Zoom screen.
00:11:38.860 --> 00:11:42.840
Arden Moore: And there is another dog with a position to the screen.
00:11:42.840 --> 00:11:45.340
Arden Moore: Do you want to tell everybody what they're saying to that dog?
00:11:45.340 --> 00:11:46.380
Scott Metzger: The dog's name is Gary.
00:11:46.380 --> 00:11:49.840
Scott Metzger: It says, Gary, this is not how we introduce ourselves in the class.
00:11:49.840 --> 00:11:50.920
Arden Moore: No butt shots, right?
00:11:51.420 --> 00:11:55.440
Scott Metzger: Yeah, he showed his butt to the camera.
00:11:55.440 --> 00:12:00.380
Arden Moore: And we know that the dog knows is so much more powerful than ours.
00:12:00.380 --> 00:12:08.380
Arden Moore: I just got back from a huge trip in Athens, Greece, the cradle of civilization and was at a museum.
00:12:08.380 --> 00:12:11.640
Arden Moore: But I really wish I was at the Museum of Odors.
00:12:11.640 --> 00:12:12.960
Arden Moore: Tell us about that one.
00:12:12.960 --> 00:12:14.500
Arden Moore: There's a lineup of dogs.
00:12:14.500 --> 00:12:15.520
Arden Moore: And what's one say?
00:12:16.100 --> 00:12:18.880
Scott Metzger: They're at an atrium of a museum.
00:12:18.880 --> 00:12:20.440
Scott Metzger: And it says Museum of Odors.
00:12:20.440 --> 00:12:21.660
Scott Metzger: And there's a sign.
00:12:21.660 --> 00:12:22.920
Scott Metzger: There's a bunch of dogs lined up.
00:12:22.920 --> 00:12:27.660
Scott Metzger: And one dog, a father dog, is talking to his son, saying it's going to be worth it.
00:12:27.660 --> 00:12:32.280
Scott Metzger: And then there's a sign pointing off, saying all things nasty and disgusting.
00:12:32.280 --> 00:12:33.480
Scott Metzger: So they're all just excited.
00:12:33.480 --> 00:12:36.280
Arden Moore: Which are delectably wonderful for a dog.
00:12:36.280 --> 00:12:41.780
Arden Moore: What's something disgusting for you odor wise that you think Dobby would be like?
00:12:41.880 --> 00:12:43.640
Arden Moore: Oh, that's some, that's some.
00:12:43.640 --> 00:12:44.680
Scott Metzger: Oh, gosh, Dobby.
00:12:44.680 --> 00:12:46.520
Scott Metzger: And that's absolutely inspired by Dobby.
00:12:46.520 --> 00:12:49.620
Scott Metzger: Well, the obvious one is it and it's gross, but it's true.
00:12:49.620 --> 00:12:52.720
Scott Metzger: Poop, he likes to sniff that out when we're outside.
00:12:52.720 --> 00:12:55.480
Scott Metzger: So it's like, no, no, no, we're not going to do that.
00:12:55.480 --> 00:12:56.660
Scott Metzger: That's a big one with him.
00:12:56.660 --> 00:12:57.060
Arden Moore: Yeah.
00:12:57.060 --> 00:12:58.620
Arden Moore: What about the cat litter box?
00:12:58.620 --> 00:13:00.540
Arden Moore: Is he kind of stiff on that?
00:13:00.540 --> 00:13:01.880
Scott Metzger: Yes, he's on that.
00:13:01.880 --> 00:13:03.020
Scott Metzger: We have to be careful.
00:13:03.020 --> 00:13:10.780
Scott Metzger: We make sure we, you know, my kids or one of us scoops out the litter box and make sure that it's done before he gets up there as he makes a little snack.
00:13:10.960 --> 00:13:11.080
Arden Moore: Yeah.
00:13:11.080 --> 00:13:17.540
Arden Moore: When you see the little pieces of litter on the muzzle, that is not a time to get a dog kiss, is it?
00:13:17.540 --> 00:13:18.380
Scott Metzger: Yeah.
00:13:18.380 --> 00:13:20.020
Scott Metzger: I know that's the telltale signs.
00:13:20.020 --> 00:13:23.640
Scott Metzger: I was in a little bit of a box and he's got a little sand on it.
00:13:23.640 --> 00:13:24.600
Scott Metzger: It was like, you're so busted.
00:13:24.680 --> 00:13:26.560
Arden Moore: Sounds like a cartoon for you to do.
00:13:26.560 --> 00:13:29.360
Arden Moore: Hey, everyone, we're speaking with Scott Metzger.
00:13:29.360 --> 00:13:31.960
Arden Moore: He is the genius behind these cartoons.
00:13:31.960 --> 00:13:36.040
Arden Moore: You know, you see he's been doing it since 1996.
00:13:36.040 --> 00:13:36.560
Arden Moore: Is that right?
00:13:36.920 --> 00:13:37.840
Scott Metzger: Yes.
00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:38.680
Arden Moore: I'm doing my homework.
00:13:38.680 --> 00:13:42.900
Arden Moore: You're almost 30 years in, man, and you're only 12.
00:13:42.900 --> 00:13:43.460
Arden Moore: Just kidding.
00:13:43.460 --> 00:13:44.060
Scott Metzger: Exactly.
00:13:44.060 --> 00:13:45.780
Scott Metzger: Started really young, kindergarten.
00:13:45.780 --> 00:13:49.340
Arden Moore: Well, we're going to dive in a little bit more, but we got to take a break.
00:13:49.340 --> 00:13:50.940
Arden Moore: So everybody, you know the drill.
00:13:50.940 --> 00:13:53.680
Arden Moore: We're going to sit and stay.
00:13:53.680 --> 00:13:55.180
Arden Moore: We'll be right back.
00:13:57.860 --> 00:14:01.000
Announcer: Time for a walk on the red carpet, of course.
00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:04.980
Announcer: Oh Behave will be back in a flash right after these messages.
00:14:07.160 --> 00:14:08.280
Arden Moore: Pause up, Pet Pals.
00:14:08.280 --> 00:14:11.020
Arden Moore: Arden Moore here, your host of the Oh Behave show.
00:14:11.020 --> 00:14:11.660
Arden Moore: Me?
00:14:11.660 --> 00:14:12.260
Arden Moore: Wow!
00:14:12.260 --> 00:14:18.700
Arden Moore: Did you know there's up to 100 million free roaming cats in the United States?
00:14:18.700 --> 00:14:23.440
Arden Moore: And without spay or neuter, that number is only going to keep growing.
00:14:23.440 --> 00:14:30.600
Arden Moore: Not only does spay neuter humanely reduce the community cat population, it keeps cats healthy.
00:14:30.600 --> 00:14:37.580
Arden Moore: Scooter, the neutered cat, is on a mission to give cats an extra life by making it hip to be snipped.
00:14:37.580 --> 00:14:38.700
Arden Moore: Hey, check them out.
00:14:38.700 --> 00:14:40.240
Arden Moore: Go to givethemten.org.
00:14:42.140 --> 00:14:50.200
Arden Moore: That's givethemten.org and help us make this a better world for cats.

00:16:02.680 --> 00:16:04.020
Announcer: That's cfacatexpo.com.
00:16:09.540 --> 00:16:10.560
Announcer: On Pet Life Radio.
00:16:11.900 --> 00:16:14.320
Announcer: petliferadio.com.
00:16:14.320 --> 00:16:22.000
Jim Davis: Hi, this is Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield, urging you to listen to the Oh Behave Show with Arden Moore on Pet Life Radio.
00:16:22.000 --> 00:16:23.040
Garfield: Oh yeah?
00:16:23.040 --> 00:16:24.180
Garfield: We'll see about that.
00:16:27.840 --> 00:16:29.160
Announcer: We're back from the lot.
00:16:29.160 --> 00:16:32.200
Announcer: Just check the paper and we had a record showing at the box.
00:16:32.200 --> 00:16:33.800
Announcer: The letter box that is.
00:16:33.800 --> 00:16:35.760
Announcer: Now back to Oh Behave.
00:16:35.760 --> 00:16:37.180
Announcer: Here's Arden.
00:16:37.180 --> 00:16:40.200
Arden Moore: Welcome back to the Oh Behave Show on Pet Life Radio.
00:16:40.200 --> 00:16:41.940
Arden Moore: I'm your host, Arden Moore.
00:16:41.940 --> 00:16:48.640
Arden Moore: I have been wanting to get this man on my show for quite a bit and I just gave it a valiant try.
00:16:48.640 --> 00:16:53.020
Arden Moore: I wrote him my whole life history on a DM on Facebook.
00:16:53.160 --> 00:16:59.940
Arden Moore: Gave him all my links so he didn't think I was A, a stalker and B, that I really do have a radio show.
00:16:59.940 --> 00:17:06.400
Arden Moore: I was so delighted, Scott, that you actually promptly replied, which kudos to you.
00:17:06.400 --> 00:17:17.320
Arden Moore: I did this and then Dallas got hit by a tornado and I was without power for five days, so everything turned out okay because we have power now.
00:17:17.320 --> 00:17:21.040
Arden Moore: The big old trees that fell in our yard uprooted.
00:17:21.520 --> 00:17:23.740
Arden Moore: Oh my, missed our house.
00:17:23.740 --> 00:17:25.640
Scott Metzger: Oh, that's lucky, but I'm sorry about that.
00:17:25.640 --> 00:17:27.400
Arden Moore: Yeah, but that's mother nature.
00:17:27.400 --> 00:17:34.240
Arden Moore: But anyway, so kind of keeping me with my sense of humor have always been your cartoons.
00:17:34.240 --> 00:17:46.000
Arden Moore: And one of my picks is people, if you bank at Chase Bank, you will never go into the lobby the same way again after seeing a Scott Metzger cartoon.
00:17:46.000 --> 00:17:51.700
Arden Moore: And just to tee up and I'll let you give the message, the teller is actually a squirrel, right?
00:17:51.700 --> 00:17:53.860
Arden Moore: And there's a dog as a customer.
00:17:53.860 --> 00:17:54.320
Scott Metzger: Yeah.
00:17:54.320 --> 00:17:55.460
Arden Moore: Walk us through it.
00:17:55.460 --> 00:17:59.700
Scott Metzger: So yeah, the squirrel has a teller and the dog is a golden retriever type of dog.
00:17:59.700 --> 00:18:00.800
Scott Metzger: And he's all excited.
00:18:00.800 --> 00:18:02.000
Arden Moore: Squirrel, squirrel, squirrel, squirrel.
00:18:02.000 --> 00:18:02.520
Scott Metzger: Yeah.
00:18:02.520 --> 00:18:08.020
Scott Metzger: So behind the squirrel is the Chase logo signage in the squirrel thing of the dog.
00:18:08.020 --> 00:18:09.200
Scott Metzger: Sir, it's just a sign.
00:18:09.200 --> 00:18:10.560
Scott Metzger: It's not a suggestion.
00:18:10.560 --> 00:18:12.640
Arden Moore: So, I mean, think about how did you get that?
00:18:12.640 --> 00:18:15.820
Arden Moore: I mean, were you one day just in a bank line or what?
00:18:15.820 --> 00:18:17.360
Scott Metzger: I was, yeah, pretty much.
00:18:17.600 --> 00:18:19.160
Scott Metzger: We bank at Chase, my wife and I.
00:18:19.160 --> 00:18:20.800
Scott Metzger: So like, I was at Chase.
00:18:20.800 --> 00:18:23.160
Scott Metzger: I was like, just kind of, it just hit me, you know?
00:18:23.160 --> 00:18:24.300
Scott Metzger: That's the thing with ideas.
00:18:24.300 --> 00:18:25.540
Scott Metzger: They could just come at any time.
00:18:25.540 --> 00:18:31.520
Scott Metzger: You're just, you know, sometimes when you're sitting down to come up with ideas with a pad of paper, it's sometimes it's hard.
00:18:31.520 --> 00:18:36.700
Scott Metzger: But when you're out and about in the world, an idea just can come out of nowhere like that, you know, when you're driving.
00:18:36.700 --> 00:18:43.940
Arden Moore: And my other corporate favorite for cats, for all of us that walk into a Walmart, we know the drill.
00:18:44.180 --> 00:18:51.060
Arden Moore: There's usually a senior greeting us as soon as we get her one toe into the door.
00:18:51.060 --> 00:18:55.980
Arden Moore: But in your cartoon, Scott, there's a cat with the Walmart blue jacket.
00:18:55.980 --> 00:18:56.500
Scott Metzger: Right.
00:18:56.500 --> 00:18:56.960
Arden Moore: All right.
00:18:56.960 --> 00:18:57.640
Arden Moore: What's happening?
00:18:57.640 --> 00:18:59.280
Arden Moore: Because it's catitude time.
00:18:59.300 --> 00:19:00.160
Scott Metzger: Oh, yeah.
00:19:00.160 --> 00:19:01.540
Scott Metzger: So the customer is a man.
00:19:01.540 --> 00:19:05.460
Scott Metzger: He's looking down at the cat and he's saying, can you show me where the cat toys are?
00:19:06.080 --> 00:19:12.960
Scott Metzger: And the cat's just sitting there and on the back of his face shows his back and the back of his vest and says, how may I ignore you?
00:19:12.960 --> 00:19:13.680
Scott Metzger: Yes.
00:19:13.680 --> 00:19:15.640
Scott Metzger: And he's no longer with us.
00:19:15.640 --> 00:19:21.440
Scott Metzger: But that was who was that tribute to that was to my cat, Hannah, who was a sweetheart.
00:19:21.440 --> 00:19:26.100
Scott Metzger: She loved my wife and daughter and would kind of could take her leave me and my son.
00:19:26.100 --> 00:19:27.480
Scott Metzger: So it was kind of like that.
00:19:27.480 --> 00:19:28.660
Scott Metzger: Yeah, I got a little bit.
00:19:28.660 --> 00:19:29.620
Arden Moore: All right.
00:19:29.620 --> 00:19:30.520
Arden Moore: I got two more.
00:19:30.520 --> 00:19:32.120
Arden Moore: Can you tell I actually followed you?
00:19:32.800 --> 00:19:33.360
Arden Moore: All right.
00:19:33.360 --> 00:19:39.460
Arden Moore: You've got a guy and he's out in the yard and he just threw a stick for his fetching dog.
00:19:39.460 --> 00:19:42.140
Arden Moore: And then he looks down and the dog is not fetching.
00:19:42.140 --> 00:19:42.840
Arden Moore: What's going on?
00:19:42.840 --> 00:19:43.980
Arden Moore: Do you remember that one?
00:19:43.980 --> 00:19:45.360
Arden Moore: He's looking at a tablet.
00:19:45.360 --> 00:19:46.780
Arden Moore: He's a high tech dog.
00:19:46.800 --> 00:19:49.780
Scott Metzger: Oh, you know, I don't I don't know if that's mine actually.
00:19:49.780 --> 00:19:54.120
Arden Moore: Oh, I thought it said the stick is right there and he's got a GPS.
00:19:54.120 --> 00:19:56.260
Scott Metzger: No, that's I think that's a Mark Presegar chain.
00:19:56.260 --> 00:19:57.000
Scott Metzger: Damn it.
00:19:57.000 --> 00:19:57.500
Scott Metzger: It's okay.
00:19:57.500 --> 00:19:59.260
Scott Metzger: I get mistaken for him quite a bit.
00:19:59.360 --> 00:20:02.140
Scott Metzger: And I think, yeah, I like you better every so often.
00:20:02.140 --> 00:20:02.860
Scott Metzger: It's okay.
00:20:02.860 --> 00:20:03.300
Scott Metzger: It's okay.
00:20:03.300 --> 00:20:04.320
Scott Metzger: It's totally.
00:20:04.320 --> 00:20:06.280
Scott Metzger: Yeah, we have a very similar drawing style.
00:20:06.280 --> 00:20:11.160
Arden Moore: So now you have a knack for knowing that cats like boxes.
00:20:11.160 --> 00:20:11.800
Scott Metzger: Yes.
00:20:11.800 --> 00:20:13.520
Arden Moore: And can you share a couple?
00:20:13.520 --> 00:20:17.200
Arden Moore: Because we get the deliveries and it's a cat tree.
00:20:17.200 --> 00:20:21.060
Arden Moore: I'm going to be putting together for the cat or it's cat toys.
00:20:21.060 --> 00:20:27.460
Arden Moore: And I look over and Casey and Rusty, my two orange tabbies are like we're in the box.
00:20:28.040 --> 00:20:28.900
Scott Metzger: Yeah, exactly.
00:20:28.900 --> 00:20:29.520
Scott Metzger: That's true.
00:20:29.520 --> 00:20:33.500
Scott Metzger: Yeah, there's I mean, gosh, both my cats love boxes.
00:20:33.500 --> 00:20:37.680
Scott Metzger: Then Piper is hilarious because she'll get many, even a tiny little box she'll sit in.
00:20:37.680 --> 00:20:41.400
Arden Moore: What is it that they do that if they can fit, they sit?
00:20:41.400 --> 00:20:43.300
Arden Moore: Is that the thing?
00:20:43.300 --> 00:20:49.980
Scott Metzger: The funny thing is I saw this mean that was floating around and said, we all make fun of cats or folk fun of cats for loving boxes so much.
00:20:49.980 --> 00:20:54.660
Scott Metzger: But if there was a huge box in your living room that you could fit in, and you probably sit in it too.
00:20:54.660 --> 00:20:55.920
Scott Metzger: I thought it was kind of funny.
00:20:55.920 --> 00:20:58.160
Scott Metzger: But yeah, I don't know this.
00:20:58.160 --> 00:21:00.680
Scott Metzger: Yeah, every cat I've had loves sitting in boxes.
00:21:00.680 --> 00:21:04.380
Scott Metzger: And I know there's people that have cats that don't particularly like that.
00:21:04.380 --> 00:21:07.140
Scott Metzger: So I think that's for me, that's not been the case.
00:21:07.140 --> 00:21:08.360
Scott Metzger: They've always like that.
00:21:08.360 --> 00:21:09.600
Scott Metzger: So it's kind of fun.
00:21:09.600 --> 00:21:15.180
Arden Moore: I know that you have these cartoons and you do licensing, but you have some books too.
00:21:15.180 --> 00:21:20.300
Arden Moore: And even the titles will make you everyone go out want to buy them.
00:21:20.700 --> 00:21:24.840
Arden Moore: And so I want to make sure I've got it because I had them right here.
00:21:24.840 --> 00:21:31.880
Arden Moore: The latest one that came out, you have Squirrel, Bacon, Ball and Other Distractions.
00:21:31.880 --> 00:21:33.500
Arden Moore: What a great title for a book.
00:21:33.500 --> 00:21:34.440
Arden Moore: Tell us about that.
00:21:34.440 --> 00:21:34.900
Scott Metzger: Thanks.
00:21:34.900 --> 00:21:40.600
Scott Metzger: Yeah, that's my collection of dog cartoons that came out in 2022, of all of 2022.
00:21:40.600 --> 00:21:42.400
Arden Moore: How do people get their paws on it, Scott?
00:21:42.620 --> 00:21:43.220
Scott Metzger: Amazon.
00:21:43.220 --> 00:21:46.100
Scott Metzger: So it's on, it's on, search up for it on Amazon.
00:21:46.100 --> 00:21:47.660
Scott Metzger: That comes right up.
00:21:47.780 --> 00:21:55.220
Scott Metzger: Or you can go to metzgercartoons.com and click on, there's a home page that has, if you click on the icon on my home page, it goes to all three of my books.
00:21:55.220 --> 00:21:59.360
Arden Moore: And then for the cat lovers, 50 ways to wake your human.
00:21:59.360 --> 00:21:59.960
Scott Metzger: Right.
00:21:59.960 --> 00:22:03.660
Arden Moore: Give me a couple of examples that you've personally experienced.
00:22:03.660 --> 00:22:08.840
Scott Metzger: Oh, there's, well, I mean, that was like, Miles, that was pretty much a tribute to my cat Max, the whole book.
00:22:09.240 --> 00:22:15.760
Scott Metzger: In fact, my cat wrote the full of that book and my other one, but he just gets me up really early in the morning.
00:22:15.760 --> 00:22:16.860
Scott Metzger: He's getting a little older now.
00:22:16.860 --> 00:22:19.580
Scott Metzger: He's not doing as much, but but he still does.
00:22:19.580 --> 00:22:22.500
Scott Metzger: He's in Piper's pick up the slack on that actually, too.
00:22:22.500 --> 00:22:25.020
Scott Metzger: But he just the mattress.
00:22:25.020 --> 00:22:26.660
Arden Moore: How does Max wake you up?
00:22:26.660 --> 00:22:28.740
Arden Moore: There's no latte waiting for you, right?
00:22:28.740 --> 00:22:30.420
Scott Metzger: Oh, no, it's not gentle.
00:22:30.420 --> 00:22:39.620
Scott Metzger: It's it's it's scratching the mattress, knocking something off the nightstand, jumping, you know, smacking me on that, smacking me on the nose is a go to brand.
00:22:39.620 --> 00:22:41.980
Scott Metzger: People are, oh, my cat's nose gently pats me on the nose.
00:22:42.000 --> 00:22:43.380
Scott Metzger: I know it's a smack.
00:22:43.380 --> 00:22:44.540
Scott Metzger: It's like hitting my nose.
00:22:44.540 --> 00:22:45.580
Scott Metzger: I get the snooze button.
00:22:45.580 --> 00:22:47.940
Scott Metzger: So it's like, yeah, he hasn't knocked off.
00:22:47.940 --> 00:22:50.480
Scott Metzger: My wife often has a glass of water on her nightstand.
00:22:50.520 --> 00:22:54.400
Arden Moore: I only use water bottles with lids now because I've learned.
00:22:54.400 --> 00:22:55.140
Scott Metzger: That's wise.
00:22:55.140 --> 00:22:56.180
Scott Metzger: Yeah, that's really smart.
00:22:56.180 --> 00:22:58.760
Scott Metzger: Yeah, she hasn't done that, though, which is to his credit.
00:22:58.760 --> 00:23:02.540
Scott Metzger: But yeah, he's done all kind of meowing really loudly, batting the doorstop.
00:23:02.540 --> 00:23:03.520
Scott Metzger: That's another one of them.
00:23:03.700 --> 00:23:09.500
Scott Metzger: Then they're going to let it swing in all the two and four in the morning, five in the morning.
00:23:09.500 --> 00:23:09.780
Scott Metzger: Yeah.
00:23:09.780 --> 00:23:14.040
Scott Metzger: So yeah, there's several cartoons in that book about waking the human up.
00:23:14.040 --> 00:23:15.600
Arden Moore: Why are you such a cat daddy?
00:23:15.600 --> 00:23:16.840
Arden Moore: What is it about cats?
00:23:17.140 --> 00:23:21.280
Arden Moore: I say real men love cats, so you've had a lifelong love of them.
00:23:21.280 --> 00:23:21.840
Scott Metzger: Yeah.
00:23:21.840 --> 00:23:26.840
Scott Metzger: Well, probably my first cat I had growing up was when I was five years old, we got a cat.
00:23:26.840 --> 00:23:29.280
Scott Metzger: So that's an impressionable age.
00:23:29.280 --> 00:23:32.740
Scott Metzger: We had her till I was in high school, senior high school.
00:23:32.960 --> 00:23:37.000
Scott Metzger: We also had a dog, a golden retriever when I was in high school.
00:23:37.000 --> 00:23:40.600
Scott Metzger: Dobby was the first dog I've had since I was in high school.
00:23:40.600 --> 00:23:42.420
Scott Metzger: So I love dogs too.
00:23:42.420 --> 00:23:46.560
Scott Metzger: So it's like, yeah, cats, I just think they're funny.
00:23:46.560 --> 00:23:48.760
Scott Metzger: They're both funny in their own ways.
00:23:48.760 --> 00:23:55.580
Scott Metzger: Cats are just, they have this dignity to them in a way, so they do something stupid or fall off, jump up on a shelf and fall down.
00:23:55.580 --> 00:23:56.660
Scott Metzger: It's hilarious.
00:23:56.660 --> 00:24:01.620
Arden Moore: Do you ever notice, Scott, when they do it, they don't like to be embarrassed, they'll start grooming?
00:24:02.080 --> 00:24:03.140
Scott Metzger: Yeah, it's like they're casual.
00:24:03.140 --> 00:24:03.680
Scott Metzger: It's cool.
00:24:03.680 --> 00:24:04.660
Scott Metzger: You didn't see that.
00:24:04.660 --> 00:24:05.700
Scott Metzger: I meant for that to happen.
00:24:05.700 --> 00:24:07.780
Scott Metzger: Yeah, it's like it's pretty funny.
00:24:07.780 --> 00:24:10.780
Arden Moore: But if a dog does it, the dog will do it again to get laughed, right?
00:24:10.780 --> 00:24:11.660
Scott Metzger: Whatever.
00:24:11.660 --> 00:24:12.380
Scott Metzger: Exactly.
00:24:12.380 --> 00:24:13.800
Scott Metzger: That's cool to get me some attention.
00:24:13.800 --> 00:24:14.460
Scott Metzger: That's great.
00:24:14.460 --> 00:24:14.720
Scott Metzger: Yeah.
00:24:14.720 --> 00:24:25.880
Arden Moore: Well, I know you're not a animal behaviorist, but you have studied animal behavior because you have to, because you have to have cartoons that relate to your audiences.
00:24:25.880 --> 00:24:29.600
Arden Moore: So what's your take on the 21st century cat these days?
00:24:30.100 --> 00:24:33.920
Arden Moore: Not the one you grew up with, but now, what's the cat of the 20th century cat?
00:24:33.920 --> 00:24:36.320
Scott Metzger: The cat that's the next generation.
00:24:36.320 --> 00:24:48.800
Scott Metzger: Well, basically, I think one thing that people need to know generally, and you know, of course, but a lot of people think the cats are super apathetic and they don't care about their humans and they're not friendly, and they love humans.
00:24:49.720 --> 00:24:54.500
Scott Metzger: There are cats a little bit more aloof, but overall, they're really loving creatures.
00:24:54.500 --> 00:24:58.080
Scott Metzger: So people who say, I can't stand cats, I love dogs, I hate cats.
00:24:58.180 --> 00:25:02.680
Scott Metzger: Well, I kind of feel like I've been around enough cats to really make that judgment.
00:25:02.680 --> 00:25:07.500
Scott Metzger: It's okay if they don't like them, but it's like they shouldn't say that they're not friendly or loving.
00:25:07.500 --> 00:25:12.220
Arden Moore: Well, Casey, my big orange tabby who teaches Pet for Stay with me, he's a therapy cat.
00:25:12.220 --> 00:25:19.000
Arden Moore: He comes in to a memory care center wearing a cowboy hat in a pet stroller and shake and pause.
00:25:19.000 --> 00:25:20.840
Arden Moore: I actually call him my BFF.
00:25:20.840 --> 00:25:23.080
Arden Moore: I call him my best feline friend.
00:25:23.420 --> 00:25:26.640
Scott Metzger: Oh, he was cute, too, that he's such a long drink of water.
00:25:26.640 --> 00:25:28.020
Arden Moore: But I think you're right.
00:25:28.020 --> 00:25:32.000
Arden Moore: I love it when guys say, you know, you hear people say, Oh, my dog loves me.
00:25:32.000 --> 00:25:34.080
Arden Moore: And I think my cat does, too.
00:25:34.080 --> 00:25:34.520
Scott Metzger: I think so.
00:25:34.520 --> 00:25:35.400
Scott Metzger: I think so.
00:25:35.520 --> 00:25:37.360
Scott Metzger: That's kind of a more casual roommate.
00:25:37.360 --> 00:25:38.980
Scott Metzger: Like, let's hang out for a little bit.
00:25:38.980 --> 00:25:42.000
Arden Moore: But yeah, it's like, you know, what about dogs?
00:25:42.000 --> 00:25:42.760
Arden Moore: What's your dogs?
00:25:42.760 --> 00:25:50.540
Scott Metzger: Yeah, dogs are hilarious because they're so like, I mean, my dog, Dobby, is just like they show so much enthusiasm when you walk into a room.
00:25:50.600 --> 00:25:51.920
Scott Metzger: They're like, they're really happy.
00:25:51.920 --> 00:25:53.040
Arden Moore: You're a rock star.
00:25:53.040 --> 00:25:53.940
Scott Metzger: Yeah, exactly.
00:25:53.940 --> 00:25:56.700
Scott Metzger: So he's also has a little bit of separation anxiety.
00:25:56.700 --> 00:26:00.020
Scott Metzger: So if I go outside a little bit and come back, so then think you're going to come back.
00:26:00.020 --> 00:26:02.000
Scott Metzger: You know, I mean, so I've missed you.
00:26:02.000 --> 00:26:04.560
Scott Metzger: It's been five minutes, seems like 20 years.
00:26:04.560 --> 00:26:08.340
Arden Moore: So how many cartoons do you do a week, a day?
00:26:08.340 --> 00:26:13.880
Arden Moore: I know the brain, the creative side is not a nine to five kind of process.
00:26:13.880 --> 00:26:14.440
Scott Metzger: Right.
00:26:14.440 --> 00:26:19.760
Scott Metzger: I try to do two to three a week and I'm doing, I'm starting to do reels now, which is, And what are reels?
00:26:19.760 --> 00:26:26.160
Scott Metzger: Oh, they're little brief little videos that you just kind of post on Facebook or Instagram or TikTok.
00:26:26.160 --> 00:26:26.700
Arden Moore: All right.
00:26:26.700 --> 00:26:36.400
Scott Metzger: But that's kind of like taking some existing cartoons, some ones I've done or coming up with a new idea, just kind of turning into a little video just for an experimentation kind of thing.
00:26:36.400 --> 00:26:37.820
Arden Moore: How long are these clips?
00:26:37.820 --> 00:26:38.760
Arden Moore: How long are they?
00:26:38.760 --> 00:26:39.920
Scott Metzger: Oh, they're short.
00:26:39.920 --> 00:26:42.200
Scott Metzger: They're like 10 to 14 seconds.
00:26:42.200 --> 00:26:44.720
Scott Metzger: You know, they're just really quick little punchy little jokes.
00:26:44.860 --> 00:26:47.220
Arden Moore: So you can put a little music or something, yeah.
00:26:47.220 --> 00:26:47.580
Scott Metzger: Right.
00:26:47.580 --> 00:26:49.940
Scott Metzger: And my daughter, she's almost 16.
00:26:49.940 --> 00:26:52.300
Scott Metzger: She'll be 16 just, actually tomorrow.
00:26:52.300 --> 00:26:53.820
Arden Moore: Oh, happy birthday, daughter.
00:26:53.820 --> 00:26:58.200
Scott Metzger: Yeah, she's been saying to me for a couple of years now, like you got to do reels, dad, you got to do reels.
00:26:58.200 --> 00:27:02.100
Scott Metzger: And again, I know that reels are cool, but I don't, you know, I'll get to that when I get to it.
00:27:02.100 --> 00:27:04.300
Scott Metzger: And then she's kind of she's helped me put some together.
00:27:04.300 --> 00:27:05.580
Arden Moore: So what's her first name?
00:27:05.580 --> 00:27:06.740
Arden Moore: Shout out birthday girl.
00:27:06.740 --> 00:27:08.120
Scott Metzger: Oh, I don't think she wanted me.
00:27:08.160 --> 00:27:09.040
Arden Moore: Oh, OK.
00:27:09.040 --> 00:27:10.180
Arden Moore: Well, happy birthday.
00:27:10.180 --> 00:27:12.900
Arden Moore: And thanks for teaching your dad to be with the times.
00:27:12.900 --> 00:27:13.120
Arden Moore: Right.
00:27:13.720 --> 00:27:14.860
Arden Moore: Well, I think that's cool.
00:27:14.860 --> 00:27:18.800
Arden Moore: So you're always evolving and you started with a pencil, right?
00:27:18.800 --> 00:27:23.180
Arden Moore: And now you're doing stuff on the computer to do the cartoons.
00:27:23.180 --> 00:27:23.720
Scott Metzger: Exactly.
00:27:23.720 --> 00:27:24.000
Scott Metzger: Yeah.
00:27:24.000 --> 00:27:33.140
Scott Metzger: Even though I started off with pencil and pen years ago and would color my cartoons with felt markers, which wasn't a great look for me.
00:27:34.260 --> 00:27:44.580
Scott Metzger: It was passable, it was fine, but I started with Illustrator years ago, like in the late 90s and over the years, gotten more proficient with it and I really love it.
00:27:44.580 --> 00:27:55.540
Scott Metzger: So now my process is I actually still use a pencil to sketch ideas, but then I scan it into the computer and then I color with Illustrator with a Wacom tablet, which is Wacom tablets are really-
00:27:55.540 --> 00:27:56.080
Arden Moore: What are they?
00:27:56.080 --> 00:27:56.840
Arden Moore: I don't know that.
00:27:57.260 --> 00:28:00.200
Scott Metzger: It's just like a tablet with a stylus with a little pen.
00:28:00.560 --> 00:28:01.440
Arden Moore: Oh, okay.
00:28:01.440 --> 00:28:10.440
Scott Metzger: So they make various kind of devices that some are a tablet they use, they use to draw for on the screen and some are just some are other Wacom prop.
00:28:10.440 --> 00:28:15.380
Scott Metzger: We're getting into the weeds here, but other Wacom products are like more big tablets you draw directly on.
00:28:15.380 --> 00:28:17.200
Scott Metzger: Yeah, they're a huge, huge company.
00:28:17.200 --> 00:28:25.640
Arden Moore: Have you ever had some celebrity or somebody that really left a mark with you, that remarked about one of your cartoons and how they really loved it?
00:28:25.920 --> 00:28:27.880
Scott Metzger: Yeah, actually, that's happened a few times.
00:28:27.880 --> 00:28:33.340
Scott Metzger: I've done some parodies of songs and I did a James Taylor parody.
00:28:33.340 --> 00:28:36.460
Scott Metzger: Actually, it's Carol King that James Taylor covered.
00:28:36.460 --> 00:28:40.040
Scott Metzger: And so I did a parody of that and then tagged him.
00:28:40.040 --> 00:28:46.040
Scott Metzger: And I should have tagged Carol King, but I wasn't aware that she had done it originally, actually, which is my time.
00:28:46.100 --> 00:28:48.040
Scott Metzger: I feel embarrassed to say that, but.
00:28:48.040 --> 00:28:49.280
Arden Moore: JT liked it, huh?
00:28:49.280 --> 00:28:50.080
Scott Metzger: Yeah, he liked it.
00:28:50.080 --> 00:28:52.740
Scott Metzger: She posted on Instagram and tagged me and said it was great.
00:28:52.980 --> 00:29:01.340
Scott Metzger: And same, I did a parody of Rick Astley's song Never Gonna Give You Up with a cat, and he posted on Instagram and said he liked it.
00:29:01.340 --> 00:29:02.240
Scott Metzger: That was really cool.
00:29:02.240 --> 00:29:03.760
Scott Metzger: Jackson Galaxy has.
00:29:03.760 --> 00:29:04.980
Arden Moore: Oh yeah, my cat from hell.
00:29:04.980 --> 00:29:06.260
Arden Moore: He's a good friend of ours.
00:29:06.260 --> 00:29:06.620
Arden Moore: Oh, is he?
00:29:06.740 --> 00:29:07.720
Scott Metzger: That's cool.
00:29:07.720 --> 00:29:08.380
Scott Metzger: Yeah, he's.
00:29:08.380 --> 00:29:09.460
Arden Moore: He plays the guitar.
00:29:09.460 --> 00:29:10.680
Scott Metzger: Oh yeah, I know.
00:29:10.680 --> 00:29:12.060
Scott Metzger: On the show, he had the guitar case.
00:29:12.060 --> 00:29:14.640
Scott Metzger: They kept all of his like cat toys and things like that in there.
00:29:14.640 --> 00:29:15.260
Scott Metzger: It's cool.
00:29:15.260 --> 00:29:16.900
Scott Metzger: Yeah, I like that show.
00:29:16.900 --> 00:29:20.740
Arden Moore: So what is your parting message to people out there how to follow a dream?
00:29:21.180 --> 00:29:29.940
Arden Moore: I see that there's a roof over your head, so you have done something right, so you're paying the utility bills and the mortgage, but you're getting to follow your passion.
00:29:29.940 --> 00:29:34.040
Scott Metzger: Yeah, and I should clarify, I do have a day job, but I, you know, and so.
00:29:34.040 --> 00:29:35.360
Arden Moore: What is your day job?
00:29:35.360 --> 00:29:35.740
Arden Moore: What do you do?
00:29:35.740 --> 00:29:39.460
Scott Metzger: I work at a non-profit organization and do fundraising for them.
00:29:39.460 --> 00:29:40.280
Scott Metzger: So yeah, that's.
00:29:40.280 --> 00:29:41.300
Arden Moore: Oh, nice.
00:29:41.300 --> 00:29:46.940
Scott Metzger: But yeah, it's just a matter of just being consistent and marketing your stuff wherever you can and I think, yeah.
00:29:46.940 --> 00:29:51.680
Arden Moore: And I think follow the trends and have a 16-year-old daughter that says, dad, do reels.
00:29:51.680 --> 00:29:53.060
Scott Metzger: Yeah, exactly.
00:29:53.060 --> 00:29:53.960
Scott Metzger: Exactly.
00:29:53.960 --> 00:30:02.780
Arden Moore: And people, you can get your pause on, he's got three books and I think maybe more, but they're on the metzgercartoons.com site.
00:30:02.780 --> 00:30:09.300
Arden Moore: I love that you can also have your cartoons on shirts and coffee mugs and other things, right?
00:30:09.600 --> 00:30:10.300
Scott Metzger: Yeah, exactly.
00:30:10.300 --> 00:30:11.380
Scott Metzger: The thread of the store.
00:30:11.380 --> 00:30:18.100
Arden Moore: What is some trait about a dog and one trait about a cat that you have envy and you wish you did have?
00:30:18.100 --> 00:30:19.300
Scott Metzger: Oh gosh.
00:30:19.300 --> 00:30:27.660
Scott Metzger: For a dog, they're just oftentimes, they're just very happy and they unconditionally love people and they're loyal.
00:30:27.660 --> 00:30:33.420
Scott Metzger: Those are a few traits, but cats are kind of like, they're more, they're very independent.
00:30:33.420 --> 00:30:36.420
Arden Moore: Is there something a cat does that you really wish you could do?
00:30:36.420 --> 00:30:37.180
Scott Metzger: Jump really high.
00:30:37.680 --> 00:30:41.940
Arden Moore: Yeah, and that break your kneecaps when you land, right?
00:30:42.240 --> 00:30:46.060
Scott Metzger: First I could dunk and have the leaping ability of my cat Max.
00:30:46.060 --> 00:30:48.760
Arden Moore: Hey everybody, I've enjoyed having on our show.
00:30:48.760 --> 00:30:52.680
Arden Moore: He's an amazing cartoonist, Scott Metzger.
00:30:52.680 --> 00:30:54.660
Arden Moore: I want you to check his cartoons out.
00:30:54.660 --> 00:31:02.160
Arden Moore: If you have an organization that's looking to have some creative, comedic illustrations, reach out to Scott Metzger.
00:31:02.160 --> 00:31:03.380
Arden Moore: He will help you out.
00:31:03.800 --> 00:31:07.300
Arden Moore: And I'm just very happy that I got to have.
00:31:07.300 --> 00:31:08.860
Arden Moore: You're my second cartoonist.
00:31:08.860 --> 00:31:12.920
Arden Moore: I had Jim Davis of Garfield on years ago.
00:31:12.920 --> 00:31:16.220
Arden Moore: And the only way I snagged him is we both were from Indiana.
00:31:16.220 --> 00:31:17.100
Scott Metzger: Oh, cool.
00:31:17.100 --> 00:31:18.120
Scott Metzger: He seems like a great guy.
00:31:18.120 --> 00:31:20.000
Scott Metzger: Everything I've heard about that guy seems like a really nice.
00:31:20.000 --> 00:31:21.040
Arden Moore: He's a very good guy.
00:31:21.040 --> 00:31:21.960
Arden Moore: He's a very good guy.
00:31:21.960 --> 00:31:23.820
Arden Moore: But so are you, Scott.
00:31:23.820 --> 00:31:27.780
