Alexa Ray Joel Says Adopting Her Rescue Cat Stella Was “The Best Day of My Life”
By Mark Winter | Pet Life Radio

Alexa Ray Joel shares the story of adopting her beloved rescue cat Stella during an appearance on Pet Life Radio’s Rappaport to the Rescue.
Singer-songwriter Alexa Ray Joel is known for her powerful voice and musical lineage as the daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, but during a recent appearance on Rappaport to the Rescue, she shared a story that had nothing to do with fame—and everything to do with love.
The love of a rescue cat.
Joining host Jill Rappaport, Joel spoke about her music, her famous parents, and the unforgettable moment she met the calico cat who would change her life forever.
Nearly two decades ago, Joel walked into the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals hoping to adopt a cat. What happened next, she says, felt like destiny.
“It wasn’t like I found her. I feel like we found each other,” Joel said. “When I opened the cage she wrapped her arms around me and started purring. I just started crying. It was the best day of my life.”
That cat, Stella, has now been Joel’s constant companion for 18 years.
The singer describes the bond they share as deeply emotional and healing. Like many cat lovers, she believes the calming presence of a purring cat can be incredibly therapeutic.
“There’s something about cats—they’re incredibly intuitive,” Joel said. “When Stella lies next to me and purrs, it literally slows your heart rate. They’re healers.”
Joel also used the conversation to encourage people considering a pet to adopt from shelters.
“If you’re thinking about getting a cat or dog, please go to a shelter,” she said. “That moment when you connect with an animal… it’s life-changing.”
Beyond her love of animals, Joel is also celebrating the release of her new EP, Tales from a Winding Tower. The project features five original songs that showcase her eclectic musical style, blending vintage inspiration with modern sounds.
Songs like “Riverside Way” bring a bold rock edge, while “Heavy Eyes” channels a nostalgic torch-song vibe inspired by classic American songwriting traditions.
Joel says the project reflects her love of timeless music and storytelling.
“I’m a nostalgic, old-school girl,” she said. “I love music that transports you to another place.”
While her parents’ legendary careers influenced her artistic journey, Joel has forged her own path as a singer, songwriter, and pianist—earning fans with her distinctive voice and heartfelt performances.
And through it all, Stella remains by her side.
“I truly can’t imagine my life without her,” Joel said.
